Disappointed with my Stanley Thermos

Last Thanksgiving I made the mistake of going to Walmart for their first Thursday, Black Friday sale. http://terlinguadreams.blogspot.com/2013/11/thursday-night-at-wal-mart.html

Though I did not find any of the things I wanted, I decided to buy a Stanley Thermos for my trips to Terlingua.  Mostly I wanted it to keep water hot for up to 24 hours so I could drink hot chocolate in the desert.

Stanley thermos have always had a great reputation as a product that is built to last a lifetime. When I think of Stanley thermos I see a big strong muscular construction worker carrying his lunch along with his thermos full of coffee.

Even read where people have used their thermos in place of a jack to change a tire.  I am now completely sure this is a total fabrication on their part.  Perhaps this was the case before this product started to be made in China.  It is cheaply made and does not live up to the Stanley reputation of yesteryear...why do I say that?

My Stanley thermos has never left the kitchen since I bought it.  It travels five feet between the stove and the table where I fill up with boiling water...so if I get hungry at night...I just pour the water either on a cup of noodle soup or make myself some hot chocolate.

I do not walk long distances with it, I do not swing it side to side and I sure as heck do not use it in lieu of a tire jack.  About the mid of February I grabbed the handle to carry it to the stove and the darn handle came loose!  This worthless product lasted two and a half months in what I would describe as light duty usage.

Before you tell me that I can fix it...I am not Billy Bob...I do not fix or modify stuff!  When I buy something I expect it to last a while...in particular when it is a product that had a reputation of being well made.  Went online and found that I am not the only one that has been disappointed by this product since assembly was moved to China.  So buyer beware!

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. Thanks for the product review. I had no idea that Stanly had moved its production to China. Hate to hear that.

    1. It is a shame that whenever any company moves its production to China their product suffers the consequences.

  2. I too have found that Stanley no longer leaves the impression of a "big strong muscular construction worker carrying his lunch along with his thermos full of coffee". This happened to me many years ago....like bout almost 20 when I lived on the boat. I knew how good they were from all my younger day camp'n trips. The one I purchased for the boat would not hold heat for more than a few hours.

    1. My dad lost and/or misplaced his old thermos so I bought him another one. This was also about 20 years ago. Though it was built strong like the previous one he owned...it only kept the content hot for a couple of hours.

I thought I had gotten a defective one but did not return it because it cost almost as much to mail it as the purchase price.

  3. I, can't think of anything I ever bought that is made in China, that is as good as it was when it was American made. Since we are having foreign made goods pushed down our throats, I will buy something made in Mexico or Central America, and certain items made in Europe, but try to avoid anything from China.

    1. I can't think of any item either Gypsy that was as good as when it was made in America. It is a shame that almost everything is poorly made in China. Guess they want it not to last so you can purchase more products.

It is almost impossible to find something not made in that country.

  5. Did a Google search. In 2002, Stanley thermos manufacturing was moved to China.

  7. Ms. B if it's only 2 1/2 months old take it back as walmart has a 90 days full refund... I think that's where you got..

    1. Joey the handle came loose back in February so by now the 90 day refund would no longer apply. Wish I had blogged about it sooner as I had no idea Walmart had such a refund policy. Live and learn :-(

  8. If you can remove the insert, (vacuum glass), take it out and wrap it in aluminum foil, then re-insert. Will improve the the hot coffee drinking time.

    1. The vacuum glass is pretty much sealed in this model. Thank you for your suggestion nonetheless.
