I wish I could go camping

I wish I could go camping like Gypsy did recently but with the triple digits temperatures we have been experiencing in our area...that is highly unlikely. Hopefully in three months I will get my wish.

Rest assured that more stuff was added to
the trunk after I took this picture.

I tend to change my header picture often as I get bored of looking at the same thing. When a reader wrote to ask that I post more pictures of my packing and camp set up, I could not remember which picture they were talking about.

Lucky for me they told me which one. When you try to cram as much stuff as I do, you have to get creative.

Don't you know Betty Boop also loves Terlingua and begged to come along :D

We needed more space so she was placed at another angle.

You can't forget your milk jugs. Read my tips for Terlingua Chili Cook-off virgins to find out why. http://terlinguadreams.blogspot.com/2013/07/casi-chili-cook-off-questions.html?

I think I slept two hours but I had to begin setting up camp to beat the heat that is still around even in late October.

Turns out this was the picture they were talking about...

I can't believe all this fit in my car.

There are a lot of thorny plants in the desert so I use beer cartons and then a tarp to keep my tent floor from getting poked.

The hardest part is having to stake down the tent into solid rock.

I forgot what my neighbor told me it took me to set up camp...it was either five or six hours. Like my friend Jeelbare would say...I did not know I was the entertainment.

This is my one gallon sprayer and I still have water left after a shower that included washing my hair.

Unfortunately later on that week I lost my tent shower in a terrible sand storm that lasted all night. For a second there I thought I was at Burningman in the Nevada desert and not at the Chili cook-off in Terlingua.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. Hey, SS! For me the prep for an upcoming trip is almost as fun as the trip itself. With respect to BB, I get all "excitis". I wanted to go to Mustang Island State Park this past weekend but just too hot. Have trips planned there in Sept and Oct when the pesky summer tourists are gone. I see you and I also make sure we have the most important essentials - the silver boxes for useful things at camp. And also to help stay hydrated! SB

    1. Hi SB, I have to agree with you about prepping...I enjoy it immensely almost like the trip itself.

I have heard Mustang Island State Park is a whole lot of fun. Enjoy your upcoming trip there and raise a silver can for me :D

  2. Looking at all that camping stuff ... if you did this more often you'd need a bigger car!

    1. I so miss my camping van Terlita :(

I could and often did take everything and the kitchen sink. The car I have now can't hold a candle to her.

  3. About mid August Davis Mountains State Park should be cool enough for nice tent camping. It is not any farther to drive than Terlingua. Balmorhea State Park is 40 miles north and has the best swimming pool in the nation. It has good tent camping also but is 2000 feet lower and warmer. Dog Canyon in Guadalupe Mountains National Park has excellent tent camping at 6000 feet and should be nice and cool soon.

  4. Just checked mileage from Del Rio.
    Terlingua 280
    Davis mountains State Park 240
    Dog Canyon 395
I needed the mileages also for when I winter at San Pedro Campground on Lake Amistad.

  5. What a good idea to set down the beer cartons to protect the tent. I'd enjoy drinking the beer to get the empty cartons so it's a double win! I'm getting good at packing up my car, and you sure do a spectacular job!

    1. Necessity is the mother of invention, one year I took a huge tent and did not have a big enough tarp for ground cover. I had covered my van floor with tons of empty cartons to keep the ice chests from leaking and/or sweating onto the carpet and also to use as kindling for the campfire.

Decided to use them as ground cover and have been using it ever since. It is a good thing I have a lot of them saved up because I have not had a single alcoholic beverage since I went on that darn cholesterol lowering medication :(

  6. Now the problem becomes getting it all back in to go home.

    1. You can say that again!

That is why I began taking pictures of how I packed everything so I could pack it up the same way...for some reason it just never works out at least not for me. I guess I am so darn tired I only put the main stuff in and then just start throwing things everywhere or I give away what did not fit.
