Statins and Parkinson's disease

I hate it when I have time on my hands because I will undoubtedly spend it watching YouTube videos or reading health related articles and then going into a panic. Such was the case today as I read about people who take cholesterol lowering medication, also known as statins, then stopped and developed Parkinson's disease.  Just last year I read where the opposite was the case...who to believe?

Why do I bring this up?  I firmly believe statins caused my CRS or contributed greatly to it...that is why I quit taking them a couple of years back.  As you will recall my trip to the doctor in Mexico did not bring me good news and once again I had to get back on them. Been considering not taking them anymore as soon as my stash runs out...guess more research is in my foreseeable future.

It has been awfully hot, as I type this it is still 89 degrees at 1:05 a.m.  I have been hiding out and only going outside for very short periods of time.  We reached a high of 100 degrees / 38 Celsius.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. I threw my statin drugs away many years ago and I believe it is the best thing I ever did, other than watching my diet. Of course it is no fun being on a diet unless you can cheat on it every day (grin). I got to have my Blue Bell chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream every night before I go to bed!! Hey!!, I am in my early 70's and dying of a form of chronic leukemia (so my blood doctor says) so why not?

  2. It has been my experience everybody dies if you wait around long enough. Trick is to enjoy what time you have. I refuse to waste any of my remaining time trying to prolong my remaining time! ha ha ha ha I am tired, did that make sense? ha ha ha ha ha

  3. The manufactures of statin drugs will do 'research' and 'studies' until they 'prove' that taking it will prevent Parkinson's disease. They are doing they very best to make sure everyone in the world is on statin drugs and then stay on them their entire life.

My VA provider took me off statin drugs three years ago and put me on fish oil. Cholesterol levels have remained the same as when I was on the drugs. I will not go back on them and will take my chances with CRS and Parkinson's. Or, I may try niacin IF my doctor wants me back on statins but niacin got a bad rap recently. However, if you read more than the headline you will find that the study was done on people that were taking BOTH niacin AND statins.

    1. I agree that drug companies will do all the research they can to prove that we need to stay on statins for the rest of our lives. They are a billion dollar industry after all and want to stay that way.

  4. After taking fish oil supplements for 4 or 5 yrs, my cholesterol came down from 254 to 134. It's wavered between a low of 101 (too low, I think) and 130 for a while. I don't care what it is anymore; a vascular surgeon and cardiologist insisted I needed a statin to lower my "bad" cholesterol, which I took for about 3 months and then got off them when I started suffering from such shoulder pain I couldn't function. I'll never go back on them, and won't bother to see a vascular surgeon or a cardiologist again, and I certaily don't worry about a low fat diet. I believe statins may help a very small percentage of people, but I'm not buying it. Every year is a gift and I try to enjoy it as such, and that's all that matters to me.

    1. I know first hand that they affect your memory and I remember you saying the same thing on your blog a couple of years back.

Funny how that study did not even mention this "small" fact. That is what got me off them in the first place.

  6. Statins nearly killed me about ten years ago. The doc at the time told me to not even look at a statin label again much less touch the pill.
