Statins

I have been worried about the side effects of taking Statins to lower my cholesterol levels.  While I have taken them in the past and every individual is affected differently...my main concern was that I was able to notice an immediate effect on my memory or rather loss of it.

While I reported this to my doctor he did not seem to give it much importance and he was happy that my cholesterol had gone down significantly.  I remember vividly him saying "Crestor is your drug!"  While it might have been my drug it wasn't my pocketbook's drug and with no insurance and it costing over $200.00 for a 30 day supply...I simply quit taking it.

Earlier this year I suffered through some crippling pain in my legs. This time I went to see a doctor in Ciudad Acuna, Mexico (across the border from Del Rio, Texas).  He ordered the usual blood work and of course high cholesterol raised its ugly little head once more along with a long list of other "high levels" maladies.

There are many home remedies out in cyber space to lower cholesterol but to be honest it is easier to just swallow a pill and much cheaper if I buy said pill  in Mexico.

In my research I have come across so many studies that are down right scary but the bottom line is that Statins are not good for you and could possibly do more harm than good.

One of my readers was kind enough to send me this link which I found very interesting and informative.  For example why don't doctors tell you that if you take Statins you should also take CoQ10 supplements or if you are over 40 Ubiquinol.

This link also talks about two foods that will dramatically lower you cholesterol. Thank you C.A. Voigt :)

  1. This information is what I was needing. I keep not going to a doctor because I don't want to go through a fight again. At one point I was thrown out of doctor's office because I said I wouldn't take the many pills he wanted to prescribe. He said I wasn't willing to take advantage of the benefits modern medicine offered me. With 2 friends who now have Parkinsons, and a history of diabetes in my family, I'll take my chances with just modifying my lifestyle.

    1. You are a gutsy lady Shadowmoss to have told the doctor you were not going to take the pills prescribed.

The more I research the more convinced I am that diet, exercise and probably a class in stress management will be better for me than the drugs I am currently taking.

  2. I know oatmeal is one food, but what is the other?

    1. Like you, I assumed he would mention oatmeal...but it was a red apple and beets. I think because the last two bring it down faster.

I am trying to find the video as I looked at a lot of them on his website. When I find it I will post a link.

    2. Red apples and beets contain soluble fiber however not as much per cup as oatmeal. So, they can help bring down cholesterol levels but will not do so 'faster' that oatmeal or any other dietary source of soluble fiber.

I do not care for oatmeal but barley has almost as much soluble fiber and I like it better therefore eat more of it which is better than my not eating oatmeal.

You might find this soluble fiber calculator helpful although it does not contain all foods it has most that are commonly eaten. http://www.globalrph.com/fiber_content_soluble.htm

  3. I really think it is worth it to try lowering cholesterol using natural means. With mine, fish oil capsules did it, although they work over time, whereas the drugs usually lower it more quickly. Regarding COQ10, specialist doctors will never admit that something that doesn't require a prescription will work. Also, CoQ10 is expensive! If you can get supplements in Mexico, I think I'd try the fish oil capsules, plus look into the foods that lower cholesterol such as oats. Exercise, just plain walking will do, is another way to help your cholesterol levels and has many other benefits. Good luck.

    1. I agree Gypsy, natural means are always the best.

I have also been reading that while fish oil capsules are good...Krill oil is even better. Here is a link showing the reasons why: http://www.mercola.com/infographics/fish-oil-vs-krill-oil.htm

  4. I completely agree that the natural way is the best. I take lots of vitamins, including CoQ10.

    1. You are the first person I know that takes CoQ10. How do you like it?

  5. That link led me to this: Tendonitis ( or tendinitis ) and tendon and ligament strain are frequenty reported in statin users. Their frequency is difficult to ascertain with precision because tendonitis symptoms overlap those of myopathy and in many cases both tendon and muscle involvement occur at the same time.

When my VA provider took me off statins I was complaining of tendon pains and some muscle pain. I assumed that the tendon inflammation was caused by an arthritis flare I now think it was probably the statins.

I wish Gypsy were right about 'just plain walking' being another way to help cholesterol levels. I have walked over 10,000 measured miles since 2006 and still have borderline high cholesterol. That includes a diet that includes a lot of foods that supposedly reduce cholesterol and fish oil supplements for the past 3 years. The good news is that my HDL/Total ratio is close to being in the Good Range and I don't know how high my Total may have been, or how low the HDL, IF I had not been doing what I have been doing.
