Caught in a rain storm

Had some errands in town one of which was to go to the library.  With the construction of the future library building there aren't as many available parking spaces.  While circling the block it started to come down pretty good and I did not feel like getting wet so aborted the trip and headed to Dollar Tree.

I only managed to get to the overpass when sheets of rain began to fall. I was lucky that I made it into Stripes across the street from HEB.  It started thundering and lightning and I was parked in front of a large tree.  Decided I would take my chances elsewhere and headed to the next street over as I did not want to be driving on Veteran's Boulevard.

It hardly ever rains that hard in Del Rio and if it does, I am usually home...it did not dawn on me that that street runs downhill and it soon became a river.  I only managed to go two streets and pulled to somewhat higher ground by a storage lot.

You can not tell by this picture but water was
flowing by rather fast.
I had visions of me in Southwest Houston stuck with hundreds of others on Richmond and Fondren and decided it was best to wait it out.  I can not believe how fast some cars were going, in particular those driving trucks.  They were creating waves that almost reached to where I was.

To think I had once considered renting at this storage lot...not anymore!  I was parked for almost an hour.  I am so glad we finally got some much needed precipitation.  Not just the city got some...the county saw some too!

Temperature went from 92 to 75 and boy was it ever refreshing, it still is.

Gasoline went down an additional two cents. With the eleven cents discount card regular gasoline was selling for $3.05 a gallon.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

    1. MsDolly was a most welcomed visitor. Forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of rain tomorrow but I seriously doubt it.

  2. We hear "Turn Around, Don't Drown" on the newscasts all the time.

    1. Only reason we hear that slogan is because our local news comes from San Antonio where it rains. Here we are just not use to it raining and if it does it is minimal.

  3. I am glad you parked your car in a safe place and waited out the rain. I just don't know why people continue to drive through water that is getting deeper and is flowing fast. And trucks can splash a lot of water when the street is wet, but in deeper water it just doesn't make sense.

    1. I have to credit my years of living in flat Houston and having to deal with flooded streets.

Only once did I venture into high water...only because I could not turn around and I was afraid it was going to get worst. Lucky I did not get stalled out like so many others did.

  5. Hey, SS - congrats on the rain! May the mesquites drink it up! Were you in H-town when Hurricane Allen flooded the freeways way back when? I remember seeing on the news the water all the way to the red balls on the bridges on 59. Yeow!

      Noooooooooooooo!!!! ;-(

I don't recall hurricane Allen but as Billy Bob says "Google is your best friend" and I was living in Houston at the time.

It does not take much to flood the freeways since H-town is flat and surrounded by bayous. We have had really bad damage inflicted by just tropical depressions and tropical storms. I remember one whose name eludes me that flooded the Medical Center and caused millions in damage.
