Late to bed, early to rise

Late to bed, early to rise...Yes, I realize the saying does not go like that...but such was the case for us last night.  You see today was our first appointment with the new San Antonio neurosurgeon and we were running around like a chicken with her head cut off.

Stayed up late going over paperwork, packing a bag just in case, as it is always best to be prepared in the event we needed to spend the night or several nights. Mom went to bed a little after midnight and I, at 2:04 a.m.  Considered not going to bed at all, but thought it best to at least try to get some shut eye since I had to drive.

Just after midnight it began to rain.  Checked the weather and we had an 80 percent chance of precipitation.  Great, just what I did not need...to drive while it is still dark and it raining.  Set two alarm clocks in case I fell asleep but got up at 4:00 a.m. as planned.  The two hours of sleep did me good.

Was so glad when daylight came...

Thanks to Google maps found the place without too much trouble.  Right off the bat he was a million times better than the San Angelo one.  For one this doctor was knowledgeable, caring, personable and spoke three languages...another feather in his cap...he graduated from Yale University School of Medicine.

Wanted so much to stop at Target and Academy but with menacing skies decided it was best to head home.

Leilani, one of my blog readers had suggested an eating establishment in Uvalde, Texas that specializes in "gorditas".  While I like them, it is not something I eat very frequently because for one, it is hard to find a place that makes them the way they should be made. Gorditas is one of the few things mother happens to like.

Leilani, thanks for the heads up about Live Oak Gorditas...they were delicious. I told them a customer from the Houston area had recommended them and they were pleased and a little surprised. No wonder they were voted #1 Gorditas in South Texas.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. I have never had a gordita and had to look it up. Were the ones you had corn or flour? What must be done to make one 'right'?

    1. Ed, the original gorditas are made of corn. I have never seen or eaten flour gorditas...not that they do not exist...I just have never come across one.

For them to be made right there has to be a consistency in the way the masa is spread out and cooked. I have eaten some that were too thick and some that it still felt like the dough was not cooked enough.

There is an art form to the way they are filled so that the ingredients do not come out. They are quite complicated to make and a little more expensive but so worth it if they are prepared correctly like at Live Oak Gorditas.

    1. While this was our first appointment we are very hopeful and pleased with this new doctor.

It is so important to find someone that will listen and that explains things clearly without giving false expectations.

Heading to your blog now to read about your son's doctor.

  4. Glad you liked your gordita & I hope your Mom liked hers too since she's the expert. They are kinda pricey, but after all they are pretty gorda & not flaca - and really everyone's so pricey now. I very rarely do fast food these days, but I paid $18 and change just for two very average burger meals (small fries/ORs + small drinks) in a drive through yesterday. I couldn't believe it! And this is before they raise the minimum wage? Yikes.

And I'm so glad you both like her new SA doc!.It must be such a big relief for you as her her daughter - and only child! - just to have more confidence in the quality of care she'll be getting now. Hooray for the Uvalde doc (and his forgetful office help) for coming through for you at last.

  5. Mother loved her gordita and we were also pleasantly surprised that they offered filling like we had never seen before. Mother is not much of a meat eater but she ordered hers with brisket and I ordered mine with beef fajitas.

Fast food is expensive and though I have pretty much given it up since I started taking so many medications back in March, I would much rather eat a well prepared gordita any day.

I do have to thank her Uvalde doctor (actually he is from San Antonio but he comes down to Uvalde once a week so his clients do not have to drive that far). He is a compassionate man and he found her a doctor much like himself.
