Chicken ranch?

I had to go into town today and when I got back, I noticed my neighbor walking at a fast pace towards the house. This is my nice neighbor who always mows the grass on the street side of the fence. He is the husband of the lady that I finally spoke to after 16 years and the step-father of her son who likes to get drunk and party every weekend.

My first thought was...oh no, the dogs did something to his Chihuahuas! Worst yet I ran out of dog food this morning and figured they might have eaten one of his chickens like Boris did when he first wandered into the yard.  Boris is the dog that died mysteriously a few months back.

Fortunately, neither was the case.  He told me he was in desperate need of purchasing a lot and was wondering if I wanted to sell mine.  You see I own a lot adjacent to my parent's property. Informed him that I was not interested in selling it at this time.  He had three others under consideration but preferred mine as it was in within walking distance.

He told me that he was going, to be honest with me, he needed it to raise chickens and that it would probably get loud.  Apparently, he is going to be selling chickens to clients in Mexico.  I wished him good luck in his future endeavors.

He has been raising free range chickens for a long time but it has been for him and his family's personal consumption.  It never crossed my mind that he would try it as a full-scale business venture.

Ok, Andy, you win...here is an article I found on the billions of butterflies that have invaded South Texas http://foxsanantonio.com/news/local/the-butterfly-thats-all-over-your-windshield-09-07-2016

I am unable to upload pictures to my blog using my Windows 10 computer, so will drag out my old Windows 7 tomorrow. You will be able to see the ones plastered on the grill that I encountered Friday on our way back from San Antonio.

Good night,  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. Many folks like to keep a chicken or two in order to have a supply of eggs for their own consumption. I wouldn't mind that at all, but a commercial venture might not be so good. Since he has free-range chickens it would probably be better if it not so close.

    1. He has quite a few chickens, like 20 or so (at least that seems like a lot to me). They often fly into the yard and that was when Boris would kill them and eat them.

To avoid problems with the neighbors, I started feeding him and of course he never left after that.

I don't think they will be free range as he plans on breeding them on a full scale. I appreciate all the mowing he does on our behalf but I do not want to sell my lot at this time as it serves as a noise buffer between my parents house and a noisy neighbor three lots down.

  2. My son and his wife live on the back of my property and they raise rabbits, chickens, ducks, and quail. I have no problem with them, of course I am usually inside in the A.C.

    1. You live in a property with acreage. While my parents house is located in the county and the lots are large...it is still pretty close to us. More than the noise I am afraid of the smell though I do not smell his chickens like say I smell Walter's poop.

  3. Oh, by the way, when I saw the title of your blog posting I immediately thought of the whorehouse called the chicken-ranch (grin).

    1. Lol, it had been a long time since I had thought of the Old Chicken Ranch that the late Marvin Zindler helped close down :)

    2. Always got a kid out of Marvin's reporting, rest his soul.

    3. Haha, you two! He came to our high school to give a talk once. He wore makeup & his hair was obviously not his own, but we got such a kick out of his visit because he checked out the lunchroom & reported we were all safe because there was no sliiiiiime in the ice machine!

For those reading the comments who are unfamiliar with Mr. Zindler, he was a local TV consumer reporter most famous for shutting down the infamous Chicken Ranch early in his career but who later did restaurant health dept.citation reports. He was a real character with a lot of goofy signature sayings.

So it doesn't matter if we moved away later, whenever those who spent any time growing up in Houston see an ice machine - no matter where in the world we are - we will instantly hear his voice bellowing "Sliiiime in the ice machine!" in our heads.

And it'll probably be that way until we go to that slime-free place in the sky with "Good golf, good tennis or whatever makes you happy", too!;-)

    4. Thank you Leilani for letting the other readers unfamiliar with Mr. Zindler know a little about him.

My parents loved him! When they came to visit, they would ask me to tune in to Channel 13, especially on Friday's when he gave his restaurant report.

What a wonderful and one of a kind character he was. Thanks for reminding me of some of his famous sayings.

He was also an advocate for the less fortunate and did a lot on their behalf. Who can forget "It's hell to be poor!". I heard when he passed away, there were thousands of people at his funeral. He will never be forgotten in the greater Houston area.

  4. Thanks but it wasn't a win - believe it or not I am not an "I told you so" type - but I do dislike misinformation especially from TV and there's a LOT lately with this election crap. Can't wait til its all over because that means its SPURS season starting!!! And that is a WIN-WIN all the way around! GSG!
