My Tex-Mex Origins

Set the alarm to 6:00 a.m. but for some reason I have been wide awake since 4:00 a.m.  Belinda, why in the world would you want to get up so early?  Actually I wouldn't...but Fibromyositis tends to do that, to us suffering from it :-(

So what is a girl to do at this hour? Well,.one can go online and use up all the available "Off Peak Internet" I had left!

What better way to do that, than sign on to YouTube and listen to the music that took me back to my origins...Tejano Music, also known as Chicano Music back in the 80's..

You see...I grew up in Austin, Texas, a "real city"...where I was able to listen to the top 40 hits.in the nation. Was surprised that when we moved to Del Rio, a small border town in the late 60's, that I would also have that alternative available to me.

The seventies was the decade that defined me as a person.  It is the era that I came into adulthood. It has always been of special significance to me...in particular my days as a "Disco Duck"...something that makes others cringe, but I must say brought great happiness to my life.

When Disco died...a small part of me died as well.  Then I discovered Chicano music or like some like to call it...Tejano Music.  It would be a feat to try to explain that to someone.  Only if you grew up in Texas or in other cities with heavy Mexican-American concentration that you could understand what this means.

This evening I have been listening to Conjunto Bernal, Bobby Naranjo y Direccion, Josefa Band, Jesse Serrata, Carlos Guzman and so many other old school Tejano greats. For some unknown reason...music has always taken me back to the old days of my youth, when I had what I thought was "a perfect life".

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. I moved to a smaller place in northern Minnesota, there were 3 radio stations. Oldies, country & a talk radio station that was very conservative.
It was really different being cut off from the mainstream, I hear jingles on a tv ad that were really catchy. Turned out the tunes were from popular music that I'd never heard.
The nights with a billion stars were a good thing, the no new music was not.

    I did miss the music....

    1. I can sympathize with you, when I went to college in Alpine, Texas there was only one radio station and it went off the air at 8:00 p.m.

  2. The best radio (& TV stations) that I ever got were when I lived outside Washington DC in No. VA. Of course the Hispanic population was so diverse that you got Mexican, Salvadoran, and other Central American cultures mixed in. I always attended the Hispanic parade every year, and was surprised one year when the Brazilian float was booed. My (ex) husband who was Salvadoran told me they don't consider Brazil to be Spanish, except when they win the World Cup - then they are ok for a short while! I loved the diversity there. The Mexicans and Central Americans also don't want to be identified with any part of Spain, although maybe the World Cup affects them as well.

    1. You brought a smile to my face because my cousin feels the same way about Brazil since they do not speak Spanish but Portuguese. He follows soccer (I don't) and if they advance then he will cheer for them only if there are no other Central or Southern American countries in the finals.

    2. Mr. Rat I must say that I have never heard of Tito and the Tarantulas before so I Googled them. Some of that video looks like it could have been filmed in the greater Big Bend area.

    3. I became a fan of Tito when his band played in the Movie "From Dusk til Dawn". Started looking for their music after I saw the movie.

    4. I am not big on movies and though I had heard of it, it wasn't until I watched the video that I some scenes from it. It looks interesting and would not mind watching it if it was on TV.
