Terlita / Menudo / Another record broken

I miss Terlita (my camping van) it has been patiently sitting in the garage since 2010 waiting for a new transmission that seems to never come as other items take priority.

Terlita is a full size 1991 Dodge Ram 150 van that I could fit everything and even throw in the kitchen sink...my Toyota Corolla...not so much :-(    Having a dedicated vehicle for camping makes preparing for the Chili Cook-off less stressful.  I can pack it ahead of time and when I return unpack at my leisure.

I need to go to Ciudad Acuña to purchase supplies for my trip and a bottle of Kahlua.  Looked at the Border Wait Times app and it was 60 minutes this morning...no thank you!  Headed to town instead as my lab results have been mailed.  I was surprised that there were so many cars at the post office, street, and Federal Building.  It's Saturday there are no trials and the post office is closed so what gives?  Apparently, there was a parade downtown.

I have been getting so little sleep lately two to three hours and my blood pressure has been high even when I take my medication religiously at the same time every day.  I have so much stress that I am hoping to erase when I am in my favorite desert.

I have been good since the last time I went to Sirloin Stockade and had four plates!  I was going to go pick-up some menudo at the drive-thru window of a little restaurant but it is quite pricey at $8.66 includes tax.  Decided instead to go to the breakfast buffet at Sirloin Stockade...don't panic...I did not have multiple plates on this occasion!

The bowls are smaller than they appear since this is a buffet.

I had two bowls of menudo and a glass of unsweetened ice tea and that did the trick.

Headed to HEB to fill-up my car the going price today was $2.229 for unleaded and $2.499 for diesel. Then I went inside to purchase eggs so I can finally try out my Egglettes.

We broke a record set in 1938 of 93 degrees.  We had a low of 62 and a high of 95 degrees.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. I've found that by increasing my Salt intake my BP has increased and most restaurants or processed food manufacturers use way too much. That Soup look good.
Be Safe and Enjoy the cooler temperatures.

    It's about time.

    1. I allow myself one day a week to eat what I like but it has been a while since I have been to a fast food place. I eat cereal for breakfast and a salad for dinner.

High blood pressure runs in both sides of my family. The menudo was delicious just wish the temperature had been cooler to have enjoyed it more.

  2. What in the world happened to your sleep? For a while there you were going to bed fairly early and getting up early as well. I have never tried menudo - something about it, and it may well be the name itself - just doesn't appeal to me. What is it made from?

    1. I have been suffering insomnia for years Gypsy. I have my former job to thank for that, I worked in a highly stressful environment where we would work 7 days a week and put in 80 plus hours on a slow week 60 hours.

I am hoping that my trip to Terlingua makes me relax as it always has in the past and decreased my stress levels.

If I told you where menudo came from you might not ever want to eat it. It has the reputation of curing hangovers though I did not have one. For gringos not from Texas it is an acquired taste.

  3. I haven't had menudo in years. I used to make it also. If it's made right I is out of this world.

I sure hope you get to take this trip this year. I know how frustrating it is to want to go somewhere and not get there.

    1. JO, I tip my hat to you...I am Mexican-American tried to make menudo once and had to end up throwing it away...not even the dog wanted to eat it...jajajajajajajajaja!

Thank you for your kind thoughts, I too hope I can make it this year though the planning for the event has been problematic.

  4. You ought to ask around about getting a new transmission, maybe something will turn up?
I'm in Oregon and paid $3.39 for a gallon of regular today.

    1. Being a small town we do not have many mechanics or specialty shops. There are two that specialize in transmissions. The first I did not like the location or the look of the place. The second one is further out of town had an appointment with the owner and he showed up one hour late because he had to go see his lawyer. He was been sued by two former customers. Did not exactly give me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

The last mechanic we had and that I liked was going to work on it but due to health issues had to go to San Antonio a lot. He passed away before he could get to it.

Hopefully, your gasoline prices will go down soon.

  5. Wow the temperatures there are still setting records? I do hope you have better temps in the coming weeks. We had snow here yesterday, temps hovering around 33*.
Aaah menudo! Always reminds me of my youngest son as he adores it and spends a lot of time searching for the perfect bowl. My friend Lilly makes it. I wish I liked it, but just can't get past the ingredient list in my head. I know, silly. I made chicken and dumplings again and it was yummy.
Hope you will be able to get your van repaired before long. Still plenty of good times to explore.
I am curious about the Egglettes. I was many years old before I discovered how to make and peel boiled eggs. Before that it was the old hit and miss method.
I would bet you are a good packer to be able to fit all in your car for camping. I struggle with organizing and usually take stuff I don't need, then forget the can opener!

    1. Yes, we are still setting records as are other cities in Texas I prefer it to the alternative of cold and snow.

Girl, you are from Texas and you don't like menudo? My friends and I would party in South Houston and would go to several Mexican restaurants that were opened all night on weekends in Pasadena, Texas.

It always amused me to see all the gringo cowboys eating menudo!

I have a friend I met in Terlingua (Jeelbare) and he cooks a pot full for his family and friends during the holidays and he is a gringo.

My aunt would boil eggs with vinegar and salt I think (CRS) and they were easy to peel.

Organizing is hard in a sedan and leaving behind important items happens to the best of us. Not having attended in two years makes it even more difficult.

  6. Those temperatures would e nice here right , getting down to freezing almost at night and the 50's during the day , not bad if it is sunny, Have always wanted to try Menudo just can't wrap my head around the ingredients enough to try it.

    1. I know how you enjoy warm temperatures, George. Through your blog, I was amazed at how hot it can get during the summer months in Canada. Now I am going to get a chance to see how cold it's in the wintertime.

I think if you tasted it you would like it but I can see how it can be difficult to get past the ingredients.

My mother was born and raised in Mexico City and she hates menudo but for a different reason. When she was growing up it was associated with "drunks" who ate it for breakfast the following morning as it is rumored to cure hangovers and I can attest to that.

  7. In case your Egglettes don't work out...place eggs in pan of cool water. Turn heat on LOW, slowly bring to boil, then let boil for 8 minutes. Cover, turn off heat, let sit for TEWNTY minutes. Then tip out the hot water and pour in ice water to cover eggs. Take the eggs one at a time and gently crack the eggs all around, place back in ice water, about twenty minutes. Shells will come right off. The cold water causes the eggs to shrink away from the shells.
Jaja I knew you would tease me about menudo. My Mom was from Mississippi and they eat chitlins (aka chitterlings).

    1. Thank you for sharing your boiled eggshell removal recipe. I have a couple of readers who enjoy going camping and may find this beneficial as well.

I was only teasing you I know not everyone is going to like menudo. I have heard of chitlings before but I have never had the opportunity to eat them. They are kind of, sort of, from a similar place as menudo.
