Can you believe half of the year is gone? I don't know about you, but I sure hope the next three months go by just as fast.
The heat is just unbearable even in an air conditioned car. Had to make a trip to the post office and to Stripes to pick up some dinner. I have had it with salads so tonight I had a chicken plate with green beans. It came with red rice and a flour tortilla (which I can't have) so it will be shared with Tammy, Pedrito and Oscar (the dogs).
There was this older gentlemen in front of me who you could tell was not from these parts. He ordered "lasagna" the lady server told him that they did not sell that. It's right there he pointed...he meant "enchiladas"...for sides he ordered okra and corn. Oh well, to each his own!
I need to find new upload options for my pictures or remove Dropbox from this computer. Even though I followed the instructions on a YouTube video, I was not able to disable it as my first option. What I really need is to pay a professional to do it for me but I am too cheap to hire one.

June 2016 trip to Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico
For the first time I decided to see exactly how far mileage wise it is from my mother's house to Mexican Customs in Ciudad Acuna. It is four miles and today it took me 13 minutes to cross into Mexico because there was traffic...though Mexican authorities sped it up and were not searching.
There is an event called "The Running of the Vacas" which is Ciudad Acuna's version of the infamous "Running of the Bulls". There were banners all over the city promoting it, it will take place Thursday, June 30th.
The US dollar to Peso exchange rate is getting higher and higher. Good for us Americans, not so good for Mexicans. The average exchange rate today was $17.30 pesos to $1.00 USD. Mexicans have to pay $18.00 Mexican Pesos to purchase one U.S. dollar.
My first stop was at Bodegas Aurrera were I bought a couple of items. Two good buys were Nutrisse Hair Color for $28.50 (1.65 USD) and a special package of two Ponds press powder compacts for $28.00 ($1.62 USD).
My second stop was Soriana which is the grocery store most like we are used to in the United States. The lettuce was not as affordable as last time but it was still a respectable $11.90 (.69 USD).
I did find some pre-cooked beans they sell in a pouch. These are not the refried type but like they would be if you actually cooked them. Not knowing how they would taste, I only purchased one. Warmed it up when I got home and they tasted homemade. At only $11.20 (.65 USD) I will definitely buy more in the future.
Those familiar with my blog know that I try to go to Mexico on Tuesdays, because most stores have specials on fruits and vegetables then. The store that has the best buys on these items, in my opinion is Gutierrez.
I purchased white onions, bananas, serrano peppers, tender cactus, cucumbers and tomatoes. The best buy was once again tomatoes at $5.90 a kilo (.34 USD). I purchased 2.935 kilos, the equivalent of 6.457 lbs for $17.31 pesos ($1.00 USD).
You might be wondering why I purchased so many tomatoes? With this darn high cholesterol, pre-diabetic diagnosis...and lest not forget that I am also lazy...it is much easier to prepare a salad than to cook something.
The return trip home was easy, only two cars in front of me and a young friendly lady customs agent.

A/C / San Antonio / Hondo signs
I bought this new computer so it would be easier to keep up with my blog and also to have plenty of space to store my photographs. To date this has not happened...seems if I want to be able to post any pictures I have to use my old computer. I know that if I had a large chunk of time I could probably figure it out but if there is something I lack...it is time.
Called in the A/C people on Friday June 17th...this was the week where we were in the 100's. I knew they were not opened at 6:00 a.m. but left a message. The lady called me back and said she could get to me by 1:00 p.m. which I was very happy to hear. Upon noting my location she told me there was a crew working in my area and they could be here by 11:00 a.m. They showed up at 10:15 a.m.
I have mentioned them before on this blog because they always arrive on time unlike the other trades who show up when they feel like it. It is so good to do business with an outfit like that.
Last Wednesday we made another trip to San Antonio and even though we leave early I would have to leave at 4:00 a.m. to be able to get a parking space in the covered area of their multi-level parking garage.
Their drop-off area was not well designed and it is very difficult to unload a patient and not block off pedestrian as well as other vehicle traffic. Decided to park first and then go get a wheelchair since their parking garage does have an elevator...will never do that again!
Gasoline prices have been like a roller coaster. San Antonio has much lower prices than the rest of the cities, just not along the freeway or Medical Center. Heck their prices are higher than in the small towns along the way.
Missed an opportunity to fill up in Uvalde that morning figuring it would be cheaper in Hondo which it wasn't. When we came back through the price had gone up three cents.
Speaking of Hondo, Texas seems this tiny town has been in the national news because of some signs that are erected at its entrance. They have been there as long as I can remember and now they are being sued because of it. I will try to post a picture of them later...it says something to the effect "This is God's country, do not drive thru it like Hell".
Last night we had a great lighting show, then around two o'clock or so a big thunderstorm or as the KSAT 12 meteorologists like to call it a "maintenance shower". It was much needed as the weeds are too tall for me to drag the hose and water the trees on the adjacent lot without the fear of running into a snake.

Seventeen years in the making
The temperatures this past week have been in the 100's and if you take into account the heat index, it has been ridiculously hot. As if I did not feel lethargic enough, this heat is making me drag even more so. This is heat in Texas and short of hopping on a plane to Argentina, there is nothing I can do about it.
I did force myself to go to the laundromat even though I did not get it all done. Seems people had the same thing in mind as I did...washing their winter blankets, bedspreads and comforters. There were not that many people there but the few who were, were using most of the washers and dryers.
Mother's nice neighbor across the street once again mowed the tall grass on the street side of her fence. There was a lot of trash that got shredded and I felt bad not picking it up after all his hard work. Yesterday I got up early (for me) and picked up all the trash and grass clipping before the heat became unbearable.
I saw his wife outside and even though her mother and mine are friends, I have never had a conversation with this lady. There is always a first time and we actually had a nice conversation that was seventeen years in the making.

No energy...
Sitting around the campfire late one night in Terlingua, one of the guys in our camp said "have you all noticed how just a couple of years ago we would talk about what clubs we were frequenting, what concerts we had attended, whom we were dating, and what locations we hoped to vacation at."
Then he pointed out how on this particular night, we discussed our ailments, what medications we were taking and what future operations we might have to undergo...and this was just five years ago...fast forward to today and the future does not look so hot.
Either being diagnosed as a pre-diabetic was the best thing that happened to me or perhaps the worst...the jury is still out on that.
I remember fellow blogger Gypsy telling me how bad I was going to feel with all the medication I now had to take. Actually, I do not think it has anything to do with the medication but more with the lack of food. I am practically starving myself with the limited amount of food choices. I hate having to read food labels and having to Google almost everything for sugar content.
I thought I was going to miss eating pizza, hamburgers, pasta or enjoying a nice cold beer or a glass of wine...but that has not been the case. I miss eating red meat and rice...imagine that!
While I have managed to lose inches and a couple of pounds...the down side is that I have no energy and all I want to do is sleep...which in and of itself is not so bad...if I only had myself to think of.

While I could care less which team wins the 2016 NBA Finals, I would like to see it go to a Game 7. If only for the selfish reason, that I do not know how I will get along without basketball until October...I know, first world problems!

June 2016 trip to San Antonio
On Wednesday morning we departed for San Antonio at 5:45 a.m. as we had a 10:00 a.m. appointment with the former Uvalde, Texas doctor. With all the rains decided to pack an overnight bag in case we could not make it home.
We arrived with time to spare and she was called right way to have her labs drawn. Then we were ushered into a waiting room where we were told she would be his first patient of the day. Caught a glimpse of him coming into the building from the multi level garage at 11:45 a.m. We saw him at 12:05 p.m.
We were on our way back to Del Rio by 1:00 p.m. This time I did not get lost but we were stuck on 410 for a while due to a traffic accident. In a way it was good because I got to see the businesses and restaurants that I could stop at on the way home. It is kind of hard to do that when you are going 60 plus mph with cars on your tail.
Spotted the Harbor Freight and Academy store where I hope to be able to stop on a future trip.

I am not a fan of either one of the teams that are now in the NBA Finals. As I watched Game 1, decided to see whom I got the most pleasure from seeing score or squirm. Came to the conclusion that I will root for the Golden State Warriors.
Wondered how the Oklahoma City Thunder felt watching the Finals and knowing that it could have been them playing and not the GSW. Too bad, they only have themselves to blame for blowing a 3-1 lead.
