Unexpected news / Walmart / Lower Gas Prices

Many of my friends ask me why I do not buy my eyeglasses online since they can not believe how much they cost in Del Rio. Though I have told them that they were equally as expensive in Houston and I always have to return to have them adjusted something not available if I ordered them online.

I got a new prescription recently and I have had to go back twice as they were too tight. Tuesday I had to make another trip as now they were hurting my ears. As I sat there waiting for the eyeglass technician to see me the girl at the front desk called me and handed me my medical file...I asked her if I had to give it to the technician...she replied..."No, our office is closing this Friday". I wanted more details but the phone was ringing off the hook so I just figured I would ask the technician as he has known us for a long time.

When my turn came the technician mentioned that the employees were all in shock as the optometrist had only told them the week before that he had sold the building and everything in it, was retiring, and leaving town!

He was referring all his patients to another optometrist one that I have mentioned before and referred to as "The Betty Boop hating Optometrist" in a prior post. Neither Mom nor I liked him and it has nothing to do with Betty Boop but rather his bedside manner. I suppose we are going to be looking for a new eye doctor though there are not many to choose from here.

I wanted to go to Walmart to check out Chromebooks as I would like to have my pictures on a stand-alone computer as I am having a lot of problems uploading them to my current one. I am also being harassed by Photobucket to delete pictures to bring them down to a free account level, pay a monthly fee, or delete my account altogether.

While I prefer to buy my salads at HEB I did not feel like making a special trip so bought them here instead. This time I did take a picture of avocado prices for JudithK...:-)

I was having a hard time opening the clear bags at the fruit and vegetable section and apologized to a lady next to me for taking so long...she said..."Honey, I am going to teach you a hack" She proceeded by cutting two wet leaves from her cilantro bundle and it opened the bag with no effort...I thanked her as I always struggle with them 👍

I could not leave the store without treating myself to something yummy...

Gasoline prices have gone down...at Walmart it was $2.779 a gallon for unleaded...

At HEB it was selling for $2.839...

Today a cold front came in and at least for a couple of days, it will be cooler.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Unplanned shopping spree...

I had not had a chance to check my e-mails until this afternoon when I found one from HEB Pharmacy letting me know I had prescriptions ready to be picked up. I had every intention of using the drive-thru window but when I arrived it was a mile long...so I decided to go inside.

That was a BIG MISTAKE that ended up costing me $87.63 that I had not planned on spending. I have no one to blame but my curiosity as I wanted to see if the items I normally purchase had gone up in price...I confirmed that they had NOT. Not being satisfied with said confirmation...I decided I would purchase those same items...to beat the future price increase!

My pre-packaged salads...

Serranos and garlic...

Jumbo Turkey Franks...

Hormel Chili
to go with my turkey franks...

HEB brand Beef Stew...

Large eggs - 18 count

The mistake I always make...I went on an empty stomach...my sugar levels must have been low.  To compensate I bought lots of cookies and pastries.

While I did not purchase Egg Nog...it made me think of Penelope so I will include the price...

While I have plenty of toilet paper I decided to purchase the HEB brand which is pretty good and less expensive than Charmin.

I bought lots of can goods which are cheaper at this time of the year like corn, french cut green beans, peas, mixed vegetables at .50 cents each.  I also purchased canned soups, menudo, chips, hot sauce, and HEB brand zero-calorie cola which I got for free by purchasing HEB low salt Fritos that also go perfect with chili and that in Texas we call Frito pie.

I was glad to find that avocados were still selling for .78 each so I purchased four as they were just ripe enough and would make my salads more palatable.

I normally do not buy bacon and after looking at the price I don't think I ever will...

It continues to be warmer than usual for this time of the year...

I apologize for photobombing you this evening. 😁

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

The border with México is once again open after 20 months...

The US border with México was once again open at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, November 8, 2021, after 20 months of being closed to non-essential travel. The Telemundo affiliate from San Antonio was the only media on hand to interview the first persons to cross the Ciudad Acuña/Del Rio border at 12:02 a.m.

I of course had to go check it out for myself this morning because I was interested to see what the dollar/peso exchange rate was going to be at the only exchange house in Del Rio by the Exxon station going to México. Was surprised that at 9:00 a.m. the exchange house was still closed.

I frankly did not see an increment in vehicular traffic either coming or going to Ciudad Acuña. To my surprise that was confirmed in the noon, afternoon, and evening news after their reporter interviewed US Custom Officials at the Del Rio International Bridge. While many people did cross...the massive crowds they expected did not materialize in the Del Rio Sector. However, it was different in the San Diego/Tijuana area which has the largest number of daily crossings not only in the USA but in the world.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Missing Terlingua

I have been feeling a little blue today as I watched the Día De Los Muertos celebrations both in the United States, Mexico, and other Latin American countries that celebrate it...it was even covered in regular non-Spanish speaking media.

I could not help but wonder how many people had shown up at the Terlingua Cemetery this evening for the lighting of the candles at each gravesite, the bonfire, the impromptu musical events, and the potluck dinner.

None of my friends were going to make it to the Chili Cook-off for various reasons this year. Two of my friends recently lost siblings and one a mother-in-law so they decided to take this year off.  Others have health issues and some have decided they are too old to make the annual trip.

I do not think I have any readers in Terlingua but if by some miracle someone from there is reading this can you tell me if enough people have shown up at the CASI event?  Jeelbare did you make it this year?

I neglected to mention that I stopped at the beauty shop yesterday forgetting that in the United States beauty salons are closed on Mondays. Our regular stylist is in Ciudad Acuña and she is open every day except for Sundays. I could not help but recall the story Jeelbare told us around a roaring fire about him studying to pass his Texas beauty license exam! 😁😁

I need a haircut badly and willing to drive to Terlingua to get one 💇

It is still warm and waiting on the cool front to arrive sometime tomorrow.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Finally quit procrastinating...

This morning the darn cats started running like wild horses on the roof but this time I was already awake so went out to feed them as I had a long list of errands to run that I have been putting off and I wanted to get an early start (well early for me anyway).

First stop was the post office where those darn house flippers refuse to give me a break...grrrrrrr!!! I have a separate bag that I keep in the trunk for my mail and when I opened it I realized I had forgotten that I had items I needed to take to the Recycling Center...so no time like the present to get rid of them.

The City of Del Rio Recycling Center is next to Highway 90 the main highway coming from San Antonio so I decided to go pay dad a visit since tomorrow it will be full when people honor their late loved ones for El Día de Los Muertos celebration.

There were some persons there mostly retired like me who decided to get a head start and beat the crowds. There were two funeral canopies set up so I suppose the burials would take place later in the day...I did not stay long.

HEB needed to be visited and what was my surprise but that it was full of people which is not customary for a Monday morning.  If that was not bad enough it was full of screaming tykes since they had the day off! I don't ever remember getting the day after Halloween off if it fell on a weekend 😡

Made a stop at Stripes to pick up some lunch plates and saw several Texas National Guardsmen doing the same...I could have sworn I read that they were being fed at Broke Mill RV Park...that or they are tired of their food.

Came home to eat and then headed to the laundromat which again for a Monday had way too many people and kids for my liking. Not a single person other than myself was wearing a face mask. This is the reason I had not wanted to come but that is what I get for procrastinating.

I went outside to sit in my car but it was hot. I figured since I was wearing two masks I would be safe but sat far away from people just to be on the safe side.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.
