Early trip to town

Got up early and was out the door before even the cats caught on and could chase after me. My first stop was the post office where thankfully I did not have a lot of mail. The little I had was from those darn house flippers who are never going to leave me alone.  The sign on the post office door asking you to wear a mask has been removed, I suppose another one will go up soon?

I have to mention that my new telephone system that blocks Robo, as well as nuisance calls, is working great. It has only rung three calls through...one from my CPA, my doctor's office, and one from a house flipper and they all went to my answering machine. I have since blocked the flipper and she will never be able to call me again!

I needed to buy my prepared salads and did so. On the news, it shows that the price of food, as well as other items, have gone up but here at our local HEB prices have remained the same and if they have gone up it has only been a very modest increase. For example, my salads went from $2.98 to $3.08 something I can live with.

Milk, eggs, and bread, or at least the brands I use (HEB brands) have remained the same. Because of my high cholesterol, I buy 1% Low Fat Milk.

All types of milk go for $2.68 a gallon. In this picture whole milk. I would be interested to know what you pay in your city.

Tomato prices remain the same...

No, JudithK, I am not trolling you :-D  Regular avocados .78 cents each.

Jumbo avocados are $2.25 each.

Gasoline went down .02 cents to $2.739 for unleaded gasoline and $2.929 for diesel.

Today we had a high of 104 degrees with a heat index of 112 degrees (in the county, not the city). I was looking at my calendar and noticed that Halloween is exactly three months away.  I am usually in Terlingua on that day. I sure hope everyone gets vaccinated so they can hold the event...I really need a vacation!

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Power Outage / License tags / Ollie's

I woke up early this morning because I felt warm, so I removed the sheet covering me and turned to look at my clock. That is when I realized that my room was dark, and so was my clock. It had not happened in a while but it was evident that the power had gone out.

Grabbed my solar flashlight and set out to find my watch...it was 4:41 a.m. and I had no idea when the electricity went out. Looked out the living room window and everything was dark including the street lights.

Why did the power go out? It's not like people were running their washing machine or dryers or for that matter their dishwashers at that hour...it sucks when you don't have a local newspaper to obtain answers.  I went back to bed and when I woke up again I felt the cold A/C blowing on my face and my alarm clock was flashing.

We were warned that this week was going to be very hot so last week I went to get my car inspected and then stopped by the Val Verde County Courthouse to purchase my license tags.

There were two people in line in front of me. It is at times like this that I am grateful for living in a small town.

Sorry about the poor quality of this picture

We have a new business coming to Del Rio...Ollie's...I had never heard of them before so I googled them. Seems they will be giving the Dollar stores a run for their money whenever they open.

Saw this travel van with an out-of-state license plate and whose owner is working at this store. It made me sad because I wish Terlita (my camping van) was driveable again.

I have not gone anywhere this week with this infernal heat. Why is it that it never bothered me when I was young? or did I just answer my own question?

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Surge in Covid-19 cases / Laughlin Air Force Base pilot instructor crashes

Just when we had started breathing a bit easier our Covid-19 numbers have started surging again like in most of the nation. This week we had 35 new cases and while they make no reference if any of these are of the Delta variant they have transferred 12 individuals to other hospitals in the interior of the state (San Antonio, Texas).  This brings the total active positive cases in Del Rio and Val Verde County to 84.

Cases are also incrementing in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, México. While our country donated vaccines to México their president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador decided that those should be allocated only to Tijuana, Baja California the largest border in the United States with México and also the most transited border in the world.

Yesterday, thousands showed up starting at 6:00 a.m. to line up to receive their vaccines causing chaos and traffic jams per El Zócalo newspaper.  I am trying to post a picture but my computer is not cooperating so here is the link. https://www.zocalo.com.mx/provoca-caos-vehicular-asistencia-a-vacunacion/

We are so fortunate to have so many vaccine doses in our nation while many countries wish they were as lucky...yet ours go unused.

On a sad note, a Laughlin Air Force Base pilot instructor who was only 34 years old lost his life in an aerial accident. His plane went down in a private ranch 30 miles from Del Rio.

Have you looked up at the sky this evening?  It is a beautiful full moon with an orange tinge.

Good night,  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.
