Seeking camping gear advice...

I know there are a lot of readers out in the blogsphere that enjoy camping.  I am fortunate to own, in my opinion, the best tent in the world...a Kodiak Canvas tent.

Due to my procrastination it has been pitched in the back yard since October 2014.  With all the rain we have been having these past couple of months it has fallen victim to a little bit of mold. Have been researching solutions and so far have found that I can treat it with bleach, peroxide or rubbing alcohol.

I am pretty sure I do not want to use bleach.  Has anyone had this problem with their canvas tent and if so what method did you use?

My next question is where do you keep your green propane canisters and how long do they last? I bought two canisters back in 2010 but only used one.  I bought it for my Zodi hot water heater in case it got cold and cloudy while at the cook-off and I needed to heat some water for my shower.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

NBA Playoff Corner

I am loving these NBA playoffs, so far they have lived up to the hype of being different and unexpected.

Could not believe the last Clippers vs Rockets game...how could they blow a 20 point lead?  They lost a great opportunity to have won at home.  Game 7's are never easy and now the momentum goes to the Rockets....shades of the Spurs :(

  1. I can't answer the question about cleaning a canvas tent. You are lucky to have one - I haven't seen a canvas tent in a long while; it should last forever! As far as the propane goes, I don't think they "go bad". If I were you I would hook it up to something that runs on propane - your heater, a camp stove, etc., and see if it will light. I keep those things on hand for years, as well as some butane cannisters for my one burner stove, and they seem to go on and on.

    1. I am ashamed to admit that I am afraid of propane or anything that could potentially blow up on me. My Zodi water heater is the only thing I own that requires a propane canister and it is back home in Houston.

Thank you Gypsy, glad to know that they do not go bad.

  2. Sorry I can't help with the canvas either but I'm pretty sure the propane canisters should be good as long as they haven't rusted. We bought one of those insect foggers years ago and did not realize that they used a lot less propane than I expected. We bought eight of those canisters at the same time and they've been sitting in the shed for years. Each time I pull one out, they work without issue.

    1. Thanks Dave. I keep mine in the shed as well partly because I was afraid they might blow up if we had a fire in the house.

  3. The propane never goes bad. The canisters can leak slowly over many years. Just pick up the canister and shake it. If it is leaking a little bit or you have used some of it you will feel sloshing inside.
As far as the canvas goes, go to the tent manufacturer and do it per their directions.

  4. I would think a weak bleach solution to kill the mold then a good rinse & dry to save the canvas.
Find a commercial treatment for killing mold on canvas & read the ingredients, I'll bet that's what they use.
When it dry, take the tent down & put it away?

    1. I am afraid to use even a weak bleach solution because it might ruin the canvas and I paid a lot for my tent. Was hoping someone might have had a similar issue with mold and could recommend a product or a less harsh solution.

You better believe I will put it away now and next time I wont leave it up so long!

  5. I haven't had to try this but recently was told vinegar will work and won't stain the tent. Like everyone else here propane will not go bad I keep it in my shed.

    1. Hi JO!!!

At Barney's suggestion I went to the Kodiak canvas website and they recommended the vinegar solution as well.

Wish it would stop raining so I could give it a try because the mold has really taken a hold of it these past two weeks, as rain is not an every day occurrence in this part of Texas.

Thank you for stopping by :)
