My computer is on its last legs

It is a struggle just to try to get online these days. Have ran malware, done scans but this computer is pretty much on its last legs.

It tells me that I need to replace the battery even though I now just run it using the power cord.  I went to Walmart to check out the inventory and found a few that were reasonable. I guess I could buy one online, but I like to see, feel and try out a product in particular something that I will be using on a daily basis.

Then comes the issue of Windows 8...I can barely operate Windows 7...:-(

Can you believe it is July already?  Time has sure flown by this year.  Wanted to do one last post on June 30th but neither Chrome or IE would open.  If that was not enough my internet service provider kept on giving me the Web Acceleration message it frequently does.  Oh well...me and my first world problems.

I can't wish you Terlingua dreams, as it is almost noon...so have a great day.

  1. I am scheduled for a computer update (new computer) when I get back to my technical support group in Alabama (Gavin's parents).

    1. You are lucky to have someone as technical savvy as your son and daughter-in-law to advise you.

  2. My last three computers were used upgrades from what I had, but still no where close to new. New ones are way out of my budget.

    1. My last one several years ago was from Walmart for a driveout of under $200. I hope to beat that this year.

    2. Tffnguy - a new computer is not in my budget either, but using Paypal, I can finance it interest free for six months.

    3. Barney - I did find some very good bargains in the $200 to $300 dollar range. However, unlike most people I want a desktop and they are a bit higher.

    1. I thought downloading updates was automatic. I know you have a Mac...I have Windows and if I had to remember any user id's or passwords...I would be in trouble, what with my CRS and all :-(

  5. Don't buy a new computer with Widows 8 on it. Get Windows 8.1 pre-installed and it is not as terrible as people would want you to believe. It is something new and and a change from what they had been using which is always a problem.

The turning ON and OFF issue has been beat like a dead horse. I fixed that easily. To turn ON I push the power button then click one icon and my Home Page appears. To shut OFF I close the lid. How complex is that?

  6. To get win7, i had to order it online from Walmart. I got one of those cheap HP laptops with win8, horrible, took it back and got the other. Now got to ask, why do you want a desktop?

    1. I want to set up a dedicated spot so both mother and I can access it and I think a desktop would work best for us.

  7. I still prefer my desktop, its just what I'm most comfortable with, and rite now I got media player crankin out tunes as I type. I got a laptop and a tablet too plus a smart fone and they all get the job done. I got lucky when my last pc crashed, I had an old desktop had been given to me with a bad hard drive and I found a guy who replaced the hard drive (a used one) then loaded up windows 7, for $80. already had the dvd installed and a monitor so I was ready to go, that's been almost 2 yrs now. there's a gazillion computers out there and you'll find yours too.

    1. Hi Redmike you got lucky finding a guy who could install a hard drive for you at a great price. In Del Rio, no one will work on your PC for under $100 bucks

  11. Hope all is well with you & your Mom, Ms. B. You haven't updated in a while. I'm hoping it's just computer probs or you've just decided to cut back on blogging and all is well with you both. (Also with Walter and the cat!)

As for computer, you've probably already purchased your new one, but I'll add my 2 cents anyway. I like the all-in-ones which I think those HPs you were looking at above in your post here may be.

My Dell All in One (an XPS 18) can be used as a desktop (plugs into a stand & uses bluetooth for all the peripherals I use like keyboard, graphics pad & printers) or as a giant tablet (it's touchscreen) that I can move around the house - to take a movie or show to bed, say, or even take with me in a carry case on the road although it's slightly bigger & heavier than the average laptop/notebook so I tend to avoid that if I can.

Like RedMike, I also have an older ipad & a touch laptop for travel (both are kinda ancient & will need replacing soon) plus a Kindle, etc and all those different devices definitely help to fill in for different tasks, but I still believe I need at least a semi-sorta desktop-type machine with lots of power & mucho memory and the newer AIOs work great for me. I recommend them because they're just more versatile than a standard desktop.

Good luck on getting back up & running with your new system, take care, and say hi to your Mom & Walter from all of us!

    1. Hi Leilani, thank you for your input...wow, you have a lot of gadgets!

Mom and I are doing well. In lieu of a computer I have turned to filling my insomniac late nights watching HGTV and DIY network. Since it goes off the air at 3:00 a.m. I am actually sleeping more...no more going to sleep at 5:00 a.m. or later.

Will have to update Walter's blog. there is lots of news on the critter front.
