Lazy Thursday in Terlingua, Texas

After driving all night and just stopping for catnaps it was expected that the girls would sleep in on Thursday morning.  However it was odd that the guys camp would sleep late.  We are talking about men that are used to getting up at the crack of dawn (even though that is about the time the party ended) hehehehe....:D

The sleeping beauties

As much as I wish I could have slept late, I was wide awake by 7:00 a.m.  If you have never suffered from insomnia...you have no idea how lucky you are!  It seemed like everyone decided to sleep in today, even the camp with the food!  As you know I have many virtues but cooking is NOT one of them, so I go in with another camp who DO know how to cook.

Even the decorations looked like they had partied too much :D

The girls woke up around ten o'clock but there was no life in the guys camp...we were getting concerned!  We later found out they were hiding out in their RV's afraid that the "Houston Chicks" though we later learned the dubbed us "The Houston Witches" (because we dressed like witches on Halloween) would FORCE them to keep on partying...jajajajajajaja...yeah like we "forced" them the night before, lol...:D

Finally one of the guys came over and decided to give the girls and I, a tour of the area and take us to Presidio, Texas.  However the girls forgot to bring their passport so they could not cross over to Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico.  Being the only one with a passport I decided to stay at the camp instead.  Maybe next year I will go across and do a post.

When the girls got back from Presidio, my friend decided to give everyone a tattoo.  That was so much fun!  I still have one on my leg...:)

We were not sure whether the Day of the Dead celebration was Nov 1st or Nov 2nd.  In Mexico it is held on Nov 1st for the grown up deceased and Nov 2nd for the deceased children...so we went to the cemetery to find out...turns out it is held on Nov 2nd here in Terlingua. Even though we were a day early we got to go shopping at the Terlingua store and sat at the porch.

Stayed tuned for more tales from the desert and pictures to back it up...:D

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

I’m beat

Remember the packing pictures from my last post?  Well forget about them… I spent all day Saturday unloading the car and trying out new arrangements so I could fit all the stuff I am taking and I am still short of space :-(

The choice was take the stuff I need to spend 7 days in the desert and only two cases of beer or re-arrange to fit all my beer and then pair down on the clothes and miscellaneous.  Guess which choice I went with? :D

My aunt arrived today (Saturday) to stay with my mom while I am away so I think I am going to be hitting the road later on this morning (Sunday) after I get some much needed rest.  My back is killing me.  The good thing is that Terlingua is only a five-hour drive from Del Rio, six if I stop to eat in Alpine, which I definitively plan to do.

If you have never been to the cook-off and you would like to get away for a couple of days why don’t you join me and a couple thousands other folks and spend some of the best times you will ever have.  I promise you will be hooked.  Here is a link to the CASI cook-off  http://www.chili.org/

Hope to see a couple of locals out there.  The official page says you have to have a wristband by Tuesday but they don’t start enforcing that until Thursday so come by and visit and I will treat you to a cold beverage.  Ask around for Belinda from Houston almost everybody knows me or just ask for the girl that screamed SNAKE last year, lol.

If all else fails just look around for my tent as far as I know I am the only one that has one…but then again I could be wrong, it has been know to happen.  We will see you in a week or so.

May you all have Terlingua Dreams…I know I will tonight.

Texas Journey

Got my copy of the September/October 2011 edition of Texas Journey (it is the magazine for AAA members).  On its cover was the Terlingua Chili Cook-Off and a nice cover I might add.  Was looking forward to an equally good article but it was a rather disappointing.

I might of guessed it would be one sided since on the cover it also says “CASI’s annual chili championship heats up the Big Bend”.  While I too attend the CASI event there is another chili cook-off going on at the same time called “The Original Terlingua International Chili Championship Cook-off”.

While the majority of the people in West Texas have heard of Terlingua, that is not the case in the rest of the state.  This would have been a great opportunity to showcase both cook-offs being that they are right around the corner.  November 4th to November 6th to be exact. The writer  Dan Oko barely touches on the history of the event and dedicates a short paragraph to the competition down the road.

Mr. Oko mentions the 2009 and 2010 events and even makes reference to the fact that he interviewed a cook who was working on his laptop (This is the desert, but, heck, it’s 2011- this chunk of desert is Wi-Fi equipped”….hello???  The 2011 cook off has not happened yet ((me rolling my eyes)).

He also calls CASI de los Chisos, the formal name of the “scrappy desert property where the cook-off is held”.

It could have been a great article but in my humble opinion it was junk.
