Power Outage / License tags / Ollie's

I woke up early this morning because I felt warm, so I removed the sheet covering me and turned to look at my clock. That is when I realized that my room was dark, and so was my clock. It had not happened in a while but it was evident that the power had gone out.

Grabbed my solar flashlight and set out to find my watch...it was 4:41 a.m. and I had no idea when the electricity went out. Looked out the living room window and everything was dark including the street lights.

Why did the power go out? It's not like people were running their washing machine or dryers or for that matter their dishwashers at that hour...it sucks when you don't have a local newspaper to obtain answers.  I went back to bed and when I woke up again I felt the cold A/C blowing on my face and my alarm clock was flashing.

We were warned that this week was going to be very hot so last week I went to get my car inspected and then stopped by the Val Verde County Courthouse to purchase my license tags.

There were two people in line in front of me. It is at times like this that I am grateful for living in a small town.

Sorry about the poor quality of this picture

We have a new business coming to Del Rio...Ollie's...I had never heard of them before so I googled them. Seems they will be giving the Dollar stores a run for their money whenever they open.

Saw this travel van with an out-of-state license plate and whose owner is working at this store. It made me sad because I wish Terlita (my camping van) was driveable again.

I have not gone anywhere this week with this infernal heat. Why is it that it never bothered me when I was young? or did I just answer my own question?

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Aunty Acid Saying of the Day

  1. It is just crazy how often you are left in the dark, both literally and figuratively. Are there no radio stations reporting these things?
I love all the old stone courthouses. I always feel the vibes of all the life experiences that have gone through those doors. I really like a site called Texas Escapes. All the information and photos of Texas. Down to every little spot in the road. Easy to navigate, as well.
I do hope you will try to get your van repaired. So hard to find a reliable mechanic these days. Lots of people just car camp but its so cramped.
I don't think Bezos gives two hoots for the folks in Van Horn, and vice versa. His ranch is on the road headed to Carlsbad...was at away from town. I remain unimpressed with his so called flight. Money wasted on what is probably mostly fake. Money that could have built a hospital or house the homeless or helped the immigrants. How many tiny houses could have been built?
It remains hotter than a two dollar pistol here. There are rumors we might get rain Sunday and Monday. I just hope that rain isn't a flood such is happening in Utah and Arizona. The smoke from the wildfires is just awful. Makes it difficult to do anything outdoors.
Love Aunty Acid. I need all the chuckles I can get. Stay cool and safe my friend.

    1. I only know of two radio stations in Del Rio one plays a variety of music and another a Christian station. There could be more I don't really know since we do not have a radio anyway. I keep the TV on CNN and listen to it as though it was a radio as I do my daily chores. Thanks to them I alerted my friends of the Walmart shooting in El Paso and the insurrection at the Capital...I am a news junkie.

I figured since you are from Van Horn you would have the inside scoop on how the locals feel about Bezos. I know you do not have a TV or watch CNN...Anderson Cooper covered the space flight and was surprised to see Van Jones (a CNN contributor) and Chef José Andrés there.

After the flight Bezos awarded the above-named individuals the first "Courage and Civility Award" which consisted of 100 million dollars to each to do as they please since both are associated with very worthwhile causes. I do not know if he did it to keep from being criticized but he won me over as I know that money will be put to good use and will help a lot of people who are in need.

Been watching your high temperatures and the smoke from the fires and thought of you. I hope you get the rain but not the floods.

It seems that the genius behind Aunty Acid has a little banner to cover just about every topic and this one hit the nail on the head today.

You stay cool and safe as well Ms. Penny.

    2. Thanks for the heads up about Bezos giving money to worthy charities. I had not heard that. I do watch CNN on the internet quite a bit and like Cooper's reporting. I haven't spoken to very many people in Van Horn in some time. No warm fuzzy memories for me about Van Horn. I cannot believe anyone with half a brain would still live there. I only chatted with two people who moved to Van Horn in recent years about Bezos. One classmate keeps trying to contact me but I don't answer as I know she only wants enough information about me to twist it around to something untrue. I decided years ago that I only associate with kind and decent people. The second I spot insincerity, I am gone. My only regret was not leaving there sooner than I did.
      Stay cool.

  2. I wish I could have found a van like that but they all had over 200K on them and prices were sky high.

I did my tags online and they came in 3 days but they are still in my purse. I should get them put on soon!

Yes I love Willis Carrier too!

    1. This van looked to be in good shape. I have seen a lot of them featured on Bob Wells YouTube channel and with my bad back would be ideal to be able to stand up inside but I have to work with what I have and currently, Terlita has a transmission issue.

Like Penelope stated it is very difficult to find a reliable mechanic and mine passed away a couple of years ago. At the time I did not have the money to fix it and when I did he unexpectedly passed away at only 69 years old.

I had read in your blog that you renewed your tags for two years, I wish we had that option in Texas but only a new vehicle qualifies for that.

Thank you for saying that you still have the tags in your purse it makes me feel better as I have not placed mine on my windshield either.

Living in the south we have to LOVE Willis Carrier :-D
