August 2014 trip to Uvalde, Texas

We had a doctor's appointment in Uvalde, Texas scheduled for today. I forced myself to go to bed at 11:00 p.m.  For the life of me could not go to sleep so got up and got online around 1:30 a.m.

Needed to do a lot of stuff online and once I got that over with, it eased my mind and I was able to go to bed at 3:00 a.m.  Got up at 5:00 a.m. to administer my mom her medication and went back to bed.

I was deep in slumber when the telephone rang at 6:31 a.m.!!! Who in the world would call us at that hour?  Thought perhaps it was the doctor's office cancelling our appointment...but this early? Then panic set in as I thought it could be my uncle who is out of the country or perhaps ADT informing me my house was broken into. So many scenarios can flash through your mind when you get an early morning call.

Would you believe it was my mother's friend who really is not that close of a friend, more like an acquaintance...a church acquaintance at that.  Let me clarify why I say that...my mother has not been to church in seven years...she listens to the services at home, over the telephone. Even less reason to bother a sick elderly acquaintance that early in the morning.  For goodness' sake people have you never heard of telephone etiquette?  OK, rant over....let's move on.

Uvalde being 70 miles east of Del Rio has the same gasoline prices and .11 cents discount with an HEB card as does the Stripes store.  With all things being equal decided I would pass on filling up and fuel the Del Rio economy instead...nothing personal Uvalde residents you all would probably do the same :)

Do not for a minute think I did not spend money while I was there.  Stripes in Uvalde makes some of the best chiles rellenos for a convenience store and a plate is only $3.99...bought the last two that they had, as well as two additional plates for tomorrow...an enchilada plate and a half a chicken.  Also purchased a yummy Mocha coffee smoothie.

You may recall Uvalde is the site of my favorite Derksen Buildings lot. They had new cabins as well as a couple of used ones. This one featured a large porch.

On a prior Derksen building post, they had this building but in a different color.  I did not particularly care for it but I like the color of this one.

They had an used 10 x 20 metal cabin but since I am not looking for something made out of metal...I did not go in.

This 12 x 28 used cabin was in pretty good shape and going for $6,555.00 plus 540.79 tax for a grand total of $7,095.79.  Noticed they are offering a 36 month as well as a 60 month financing package, much like a car.

I also found a true gem in the bunch.  It is a new line that Derksen is trying out, that is well deserving of a post of its own.  Watch out for it in a future post.

July 2014 trip to Uvalde and Hondo, Texas

I called the propane guy yesterday but he had out-of-town deliveries and could not make it until today. Told him we were going to Uvalde so to please schedule us for next week.

Early this morning got a call from him asking if he came by would he still catch us at home...told him sure, as we were not leaving until around 10:00 a.m.  At least that is one less thing off my to do list.

The winds did a number on the Esperanza.

Was hoping to get some more pictures of the purple sage, this time heading down highway 90 East, but the few pretty patches that I found, I would have needed to get closer and the grass next to the shoulder was high.  Now you all know what lurks in that high grass don't you? Yep...snakes...yikes!

I really like mom's Uvalde doctor, he is a peach...very kind, knowledgeable, considerate and courteous.  Told him about her worthless San Angelo neurosurgeon...he told us not to worry...he would find a good doctor to take care of her back pain.

We had to run an errand in Hondo, Texas 44 miles east of Uvalde.  There I saw that regular gasoline was $3.33 five cents less than Del Rio and with the .11 cents HEB discount card saved .16 cents per gallon...the equivalent of paying $3.17 per gallon.

I was so tempted to drive the additional 42 miles to San Antonio.  I so miss shopping at Target, Academy, Harbor Freight and Anna's Linens :-(   If it had not been the day before a long holiday weekend and that late in the afternoon...I think I would have done so.

As we drove into the driveway noticed that my neighbor's step-son had come home for the weekend.  Oh boy...we sure are in for some rowdy times.  Late this evening I heard the sound of a lawn mower and saw his step-dad mowing the area outside of mother's fence.  Nice guy will thank him tomorrow.

Whatever happened to affordable eggs during Easter?

I recall from the time I was a kid to up to a few years ago, retailers dropped the price of eggs during Easter so the parents could afford to buy them for the Easter Sunday egg hunts.  I guess that must be a thing of the past because I have not see any sales on them even in the Houston grocery ads that I subscribe to.

Thursday I drove mother to Uvalde for her doctor's appointment.  I have mentioned before that Del Rio does not have any national drugstore chains...the nearest one is in Uvalde 70 miles away. Looking at their ad online was very excited to see a dozen large eggs for .99 cents plus other miscellaneous items that we needed to get stocked up on.

Of course once inside could not find the eggs anywhere, turns out they sold out yet their flashing sign was still advertising them.  Did not find any of the other items I was going to purchase either...good thing I did not make a special trip just to shop at Walgreens or I would have been pretty darn upset.

Of the one thing I was thankful for, was that the weather forecasters were wrong and it did not get to the high 80's.  It was a cloudy day in the 70's.  Once again the price of gasoline went up.  In Uvalde it was selling for $3.45 a gallon and in Del Rio for $3.49.

On a side note this time that we passed the Immigration Check Point in Uvalde, I noticed more cameras than on our last trip, wonder what gives?  I could only take this picture from afar since they tend to get upset if they catch taking a photo.  If my blog disappears this is probably the reason why.

The Heat is Here to Stay

If you have been reading this dribble you know I usually wait till late at night to do my post. Yesterday I did a post early in the day something I do not normally do but the circumstances warranted it.

Besides being in shock over Donna Summer’s untimely death I also had to take my mother to her doctor’s appointment yesterday.  The reason I had gone online to begin with was to check out this week’s specials at the Del Rio HEB so we could swing by afterwards.

I get all the Houston local grocery store ads via e-mail and it just kills me to have to pay the Del Rio prices for the same exact thing.  Sure wish we had other groceries stores to choose from.

We have had the air condition off since the rains began and the temperatures became tolerable.  However, when we got back home yesterday the house was an inferno, so the A/C had to be turned on this time for the rest of the season.

It was so nice and cool that I slept like a baby and forgot to make my post.
