New Derksen lot in Uvalde, Texas

As you all know I have a fascination with Derksen portable buildings http://derksenbuildingsusa.com/
There is a new lot location in Uvalde, Texas with a variety of models on display.  I like that they let you look to your hearts desire without pushy salespersons following you around. Can't say the same for the one in Del Rio.

Two caught my eye.  One a storage shed...

With a reasonable price tag...

The other a large cabin...

The unfinished inside has four windows...

Though the price tag is a little steep, one has to take into consideration that this is going to be your home.

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you are probably aware of my disdain for "mesquite trees" so it came as a surprise even to myself that I actually thought this particular mesquite was not so bad. Though I do not know if that pile next to it were mesquite pods or dirt.  I guess as long as I am not doing the raking, it does not matter.

A zoomed photo of the same...

Ok Andy, if I had a tree as nice as this one on my future highway frontage lot in Terlingua...it would not be a deal breaker...happy? :D

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Late to bed, early to rise

Late to bed, early to rise...Yes, I realize the saying does not go like that...but such was the case for us last night.  You see today was our first appointment with the new San Antonio neurosurgeon and we were running around like a chicken with her head cut off.

Stayed up late going over paperwork, packing a bag just in case, as it is always best to be prepared in the event we needed to spend the night or several nights. Mom went to bed a little after midnight and I, at 2:04 a.m.  Considered not going to bed at all, but thought it best to at least try to get some shut eye since I had to drive.

Just after midnight it began to rain.  Checked the weather and we had an 80 percent chance of precipitation.  Great, just what I did not need...to drive while it is still dark and it raining.  Set two alarm clocks in case I fell asleep but got up at 4:00 a.m. as planned.  The two hours of sleep did me good.

Was so glad when daylight came...

Thanks to Google maps found the place without too much trouble.  Right off the bat he was a million times better than the San Angelo one.  For one this doctor was knowledgeable, caring, personable and spoke three languages...another feather in his cap...he graduated from Yale University School of Medicine.

Wanted so much to stop at Target and Academy but with menacing skies decided it was best to head home.

Leilani, one of my blog readers had suggested an eating establishment in Uvalde, Texas that specializes in "gorditas".  While I like them, it is not something I eat very frequently because for one, it is hard to find a place that makes them the way they should be made. Gorditas is one of the few things mother happens to like.

Leilani, thanks for the heads up about Live Oak Gorditas...they were delicious. I told them a customer from the Houston area had recommended them and they were pleased and a little surprised. No wonder they were voted #1 Gorditas in South Texas.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Derksen Buildings Lot - May 2014

I sure do miss the Derksen Buildings lot in Del Rio, that is where I fell in love with the Solar Cabin, in case you missed that post here it is http://terlinguadreams.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-solar-cabin.html

The closest one to me is in Uvalde, Texas.  Last week that I took mother to her doctor's appointment I just had to stop when I saw they had new inventory.

This is the largest cabin that I have seen in any of their lots, it is 12 x 36 which is more than enough room for me and sells for $9,071.35 .

They had a lofted cabin in a smaller size than they usually carry. This cabin is also ideal as it makes use of wasted space and has quite a few windows.  It is 12 x 34  and sells for $10,126.79 .

While some people choose to use the loft as a
bedroom, I would much rather use it for storage.

They had an used cabin that had been returned to their lot and it looked like it had been wired for electricity.  However, who in the world would want a cabin this small to have two doors?

They had a shed but I kind of have my heart set on a loft shed...again so I can make use of wasted space.

This other shed was locked so do not know what it sells for.

I have no personal connection to Derksen buildings or its owners.  I just document it on my blog for when I finally make the biggest move in my life.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Whatever happened to affordable eggs during Easter?

I recall from the time I was a kid to up to a few years ago, retailers dropped the price of eggs during Easter so the parents could afford to buy them for the Easter Sunday egg hunts.  I guess that must be a thing of the past because I have not see any sales on them even in the Houston grocery ads that I subscribe to.

Thursday I drove mother to Uvalde for her doctor's appointment.  I have mentioned before that Del Rio does not have any national drugstore chains...the nearest one is in Uvalde 70 miles away. Looking at their ad online was very excited to see a dozen large eggs for .99 cents plus other miscellaneous items that we needed to get stocked up on.

Of course once inside could not find the eggs anywhere, turns out they sold out yet their flashing sign was still advertising them.  Did not find any of the other items I was going to purchase either...good thing I did not make a special trip just to shop at Walgreens or I would have been pretty darn upset.

Of the one thing I was thankful for, was that the weather forecasters were wrong and it did not get to the high 80's.  It was a cloudy day in the 70's.  Once again the price of gasoline went up.  In Uvalde it was selling for $3.45 a gallon and in Del Rio for $3.49.

On a side note this time that we passed the Immigration Check Point in Uvalde, I noticed more cameras than on our last trip, wonder what gives?  I could only take this picture from afar since they tend to get upset if they catch taking a photo.  If my blog disappears this is probably the reason why.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Derksen Portable Buildings - Uvalde location

About two months ago, I went to check out the Derksen Portable Buildings lot in Del Rio, only to find that it was no longer there.  Called the number that was on one of the pictures I took of the solar cabin.  A new employee answered the phone and said the guy no longer worked for the company.  Upon inquiring about the location of the solar cabin she informed me that she was now living in it at the Cotulla, Texas Derksen lot location.  Here is a link to the solar cabin post http://terlinguadreams.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-solar-cabin.html

Since they no longer plan to have a presence in Del Rio...if I decide to finally buy a shed or a small cabin...I will have to pay transportation costs from the place that builds them in Uvalde, Texas.  Back in October of last year I made a trip to that city and found that their inventory was running low and it appears to still be the case. The oil boom in the area has also driven up the price. The cabin above was the only small cabin on their lot but I do not really need a porch would much rather have that square footage inside the cabin...I did not like the price either.

I did like this shed and the fact that it has two lofts making use of what otherwise would be wasted space was a plus. The price is reasonable but again have to add transportation cost to Del Rio.

They also had this building but I did not like it either...again they have very little inventory.

Mother wants to re-build the cinder block fence that collapsed a couple of years back when we got 6.5 inches of rain in one night.  If she does, then I will have no way of being able to get the building inside of her property as the gate is too small.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Camper Envy

I really enjoyed my trip back home.  There were all kinds of campers and RV’s on the road.  Some were perhaps coming back from vacation while others were barely embarking on theirs.

Many were pulling trailers with their four wheelers, bikes, coolers and all kinds of camping stuff…made me a little envious (sad face).  I, on the other hand was heading home to do even more yard work!

The good thing is that I was mentally prepared for the jungle I would find and what a jungle it was specially my backyard!  The house was an oven and it took hours to cool down.  Like Scarlett O’Hara would say, “tomorrow is another day” … I will deal with the yard work then.

Yesterday I was trying to reply to comments but the modem kept on going into “dormant” stage.  It did it again a little while ago, the good thing is that there are lots of Cricket stores within a five-mile radius of my house and unlike Del Rio, they don’t have a waiting line.

I left at 7:20 a.m. and got hungry when I saw a billboard advertising Wendy’s breakfast so decided to stop in Uvalde, Texas.  I usually bypass drive-thru windows and like to go inside even if it is to go.  Ordered a breakfast platter and I swear it took like ten minutes to get served and I was the only one there.  Turns out they did not have a lid for it and it took them forever to find some foil paper.  By the time they found some my food was already cold.

Decided to go ahead and eat there as I had already wasted valuable traveling time, no wonder they did not have a lid as bad as it tasted doubt anyone would order it.  Their mocha coffee was a disappointment as well…not bloody likely I will ever eat breakfast at a Wendy’s again.

The only fast food place that has never messed up my order is Jack in the Box and I think I will stick with them or wait until I get to Nora’s Tacos in Sabinal.

The cheapest gas between Del Rio and Houston was found in San Antonio, Texas at $3.39 for a gallon of Unleaded gasoline.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Sheds – Part II

Here are some more pictures of the models I visited.  I really like their rent to own program and that if it becomes a hardship or if you no longer want it, you can call them and they will take it back without it affecting your credit.   Here is their web page:

This was one of my favorites. Would make a great little cabin.

Price for above shed

What little girl would not love this doll house?

Back to storage sheds, the loft shades are becoming quite popular since they make use of otherwise wasted space.  Only problem is having to climb on a ladder to put up stuff or get it down, otherwise very doable.

This loft shed would be my pick but a little larger size.

This shed has a double loft area.  There is also one over the door.
