Trip to the Courthouse / Darn Flippers / A warm day

It is that time of the year when you start to receive your property tax statements. Val Verde County allows a small discount if you pay your taxes before January 31st.  The taxes were mailed late in October and since as you know I was busy did not get around to it until today.

I stopped at the library first so I could make some copies and decided to stay and write my respective checks there.  During this time of the year, it is difficult to find a parking space around the Courthouse...considered walking and leaving my car parked at the library but was not sure if my knee would hold out.

I was surprised there were very few people there and I did not have to wait in line.  Happy to get that out of the way for another year.

Headed to the post office to pick up the mail only to be incensed by yet another house flipper who sent me a postcard saying this was the third communication he sent me and demanding to know why I had NOT gotten back to him.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!  Tore it up right then and there.  Did it ever occur to him that I do not want to sell my house to a flipper in particular to someone as rude as him?  In fact, I do not want to sell my Houston house at all!

Needed to pick up some spinach but both big HEB, as well as little HEB, were packed and will probably stay packed until after Thanksgiving.

Today it started out as a beautiful and sunny day but by late afternoon clouds started moving in.  I went about setting out my rain catchment barrels.  We are expecting a cold front to arrive on Wednesday.  It will be cool Thursday Thanksgiving Day with showers on Friday.

Today we had a low of 59 with a high of 85 with a heat index of 88.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Library / Property Taxes/ Long Lines at Courthouse

The local library opens at 10:00 a.m. and I was there with my previously lost but now thankfully found box of checks. For some unknown reason, the County tax assessor-collector decided to break down the 2018 property taxes into two bills one for the regular county taxes and another for SFDR ISD taxes (school taxes).

At the library, unlike mother's house, I have a lot of room to spread out and plenty of natural light to aid my poor eyesight.

Today was also the last day to pay the Post Office box rental before new rates go into effect on Monday, January 28th.  By the time I got there they had a "Gone to Lunch" sign which I thought odd since the partial government shutdown did not affect them.

Headed for the County Courthouse only to find a very long line and not so happy people who like myself did not like to have to write out two checks per property.  The ladies taking the payments were equally pissed as it doubled their work.  They were not consulted, the citizenry was not consulted and no one was happy.

Headed back to the library since I am having problems with all these images popping up on my home computer from sites I have visited...it started doing the same at the library but on a lesser scale.  Have no idea how I am going to fix this.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

NBA Corner

I am missing my Spurs but tonight I did watch the Toronto Raptors vs Houston Rockets.  I am not a fan of either team so I had no idea that Austin Rivers was now a Rocket.  I know a lot of Rocket fans read me so could someone please tell me when did this take place and why?

I thought Austin Rivers and Chris Paul did not like each other?  How did they end up in the same team after both being LA Clippers?

Paid up and up-to-date for another year

The first thing on the agenda today was to go down to the County Courthouse and pay our property taxes.  In Val Verde County if you pay them in October you get a tiny little discount but we will take it :D

The license plates division is also housed here so I got the tags for dad's old car and headed to the Auto Parts store to finally purchase a new headlight for it so it could pass the State Inspection.  Remember I have mentioned Mario's Tire Shop before on this blog?  Their dad has an used car lot next door where he also performs oil changes and minor car repairs.

I was originally going to take it to my mechanic but decided they were closer.  He only charged me $5.00 ...I am sure my mechanic would have charged me twice as much.  I then went over to his son's place and got my inspection sticker.  Dad's old car is good for another year!

For those of you that follow Walter's World...there is finally news on that front.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Busy Tuesday

One of the benefits of living in a small town is that you can make an appointment at the local dealership and get in the next day.  An acquaintance of mine that was a service tech at a local dealership in Pearland or was it Alvin?  told me to never schedule an appointment on Monday, Friday or Saturday as most of the mechanics were either hungover, sleepy, tired or looking forward to the weekend and to also try to not be the first customer.  Since then I have heeded his advice.  Passed up an early appointment and settled for one at 10:00 a.m.

A couple of months back I blogged about a little girl going into convulsions at the laundromat.  Her dad is a salesman at the local Toyota dealership and I sought him out to see how she was doing.  She is doing fine and has not had anymore seizures.  In that post I mentioned that as bad as my CRS (it stands for can't remember doodoo) is I was surprised I remembered his name. He happens to have the same last name as an old classmate of mine, turns out she is his aunt!

Val Verde County where Del Rio is located gives its taxpayers a small discount in their property taxes if they are paid before the January 31st deadline. On my way to the courthouse saw that a local church was having its annual pumpkin drive.

I then headed to the P.O. Box and wanted to scream!  If I had come to get the mail first, I could have saved $20 in the car services I had performed today and gotten a free car wash (sigh).....I can just see Billy Bob laughing as he reads this...for some reason he thinks I am cheap :D

I do not know when they opened the local Derksen buildings lot but it must not have been long ago.  I am so happy they are in town as I was going to have to pay some mileage charges if I had bought it in the Uvalde, Texas lot.

Maybe Santa Claus will be generous and buy me one of these?

Swung by HEB to check out beer prices but they were not to my liking.  The new specials start tomorrow so we will see if they will lower them enough to make it worthwhile. Even though I guess even our high prices are better than the Study Butte or Lajitas prices.

Was going to fill up but the news people say prices at the pump are starting to tumble so will wait a while as I do not know when my departure date will be.  I am waiting on my aunt and uncle to get here so I can pick them at the bus station as my mother no longer drives.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.
