This afternoon President Obama gave his condolences to the country of Mexico and to his legions of fans.
Juan Gabriel 1950-2016 |
Born Alberto Aguilera Valadez on January 7, 1950. he was better known by his artistic name Juan Gabriel. He died at his home in Santa Monica, California on Sunday, August 28, 2016.
It was one his songs that propelled singer Marc Anthony to stardom. Marc gave a concert last night in New York where he broke down as he sang "Abrazame muy Fuerte" as a tribute to him. It was heart wrenching to watch, this is also my favorite song by Juan Gabriel.

Rest in Peace Juan Gabriel, you are finally united with your beloved mother.
Someone I follow on twitter this morning who is a fan called him a cross between Marc Anthony & Tony Bennett & Liberace.;-)
ReplyDeleteI didn't know his work well, but I am a fan of the duet of your favorite song Abrazame that he recorded not so long ago with Laura Pausini (you probably know her, she's known as the 'Celine Dion of Italy' - i.e., she's a pop star but also a very gifted vocalist technically). It's a pretty rendition.
It's sad he died just as he was getting ready to fly "home" to El Paso/Juarez where he was from for that stop on his tour.
The twitter fan gave an accurate description of him.
DeleteLaura Pausini has recorded many lead songs for Mexican soap operas. I was not aware she had also done the Abrazame duet with Juan Gabriel. Just listened to it on YouTube and it is beautiful.
The people in Ciudad Juarez have not left the home he bought for his mother when he became famous, a home where she once worked as a domestic servant.
It's sad when anyone dies at such a young age, but when it is someone who brings joy to a world with too little joy, he will be missed by many people.
ReplyDeleteThey broke the mold when they made him Gypsy. He was one of a kind and he will be missed but at least we have his music to remember him by.
