HEB grocery run / seesaw in temperatures

The temperatures have been spring-like yesterday Wednesday, January 5th we missed breaking a record high by one degree. It was a very comfortable 82 degrees.

I had to go pick up a prescription at HEB and couldn't help but notice the signs at the pharmacy announcing they were out of Covid tests like in most of the nation.

I had run out of milk, individual salads, bread, and was down to my last two boxes of cereal from the stash I bought back in April 2021 so made a grocery run.  I usually buy HEB store brands that I find to be just as good as the national brands.

If your store has its own national brand, how do HEB's prices stack up?

Fortunately for me, my Turkey Jumbo Franks have not gone up in price they remain at $1.28 a package.

The same goes for my salads, bread, milk, and avocados.

Just a short story about avocado prices...my neighbor in Houston was complaining that avocados were no longer 5 for $1.00 at Joe V's (HEB's discount store) they were now 4 for $1.00...are you kidding me, woman?  That is still a super bargain price!  I would be more than glad to pay that price any day...in Del Rio, they continue to sell for .78 cents each.

They had a variety of slices of cake but thankfully no carrot or red velvet cake, so I was not tempted.

Here is my buggy at the checkout counter.

Gasoline was going for $2.739 a gallon for unleaded gasoline.

This evening temperature is supposed to dip below the freezing mark.  It is currently 43 degrees. This is the time of year when we experience a seesaw in temperatures.

Good night.  May you have Terlingua Dreams and bundle up!

  1. I too went shopping yet again yesterday. I try to always buy store brands eggs were $2.29 a dz. avocado's were .68 and fresh veggies still holding the prices. Now I needed mostly house hold items and that seems to be holding also BUT.. stock is way down toilet tissue wasn't looking good so I grabbed 12pk Charmin as that was all the Charmin they had left, I'm glad I buy it almost ever shopping trip not getting stuck like the last time those morons were buying out the complete stock on all brands. They had lots of the store brand but I don't like it and a few other brands but I don't like them either. Gas here is still high at 3.35 which is cheaper than when I had to fill up at 4.39 or what ever it was CRS. I have been stocking up on non perishable food items like tuna and some canned meats and frozen veggies. Some of the meat has gone up so I picked up a few pks of ground meat and sausage I have plenty of chicken and fish. Hope this gets settled soon with this government bull!
    Love Aunty Acid LOL

    1. It sounds like you had a large grocery haul of your own! To think that last year it was because there was little inventory due to the hoarders and this year people are stocking up to try to beat inflation.

I too bought cans of soups, beans, and even a canister of powdered hot chocolate. Wish I could buy more frozen vegetables but with that turkey and ham, there is not much room in the freezer.

I have a cousin that lives in your state and is a "nosy Rosie" always wanting to know why I am not on social media, why don't I play Powerball, who am I dating, etc., etc. Aunty Acid seems to have an answer for everything and when I saw this I had to send it to her and decided to post it here as well. Glad you enjoyed it :D

    1. I think the Joe V's in my neighborhood opened in 2010 when I was already living in Del Rio but I would go to Houston more frequently. They have absolutely some of the lowest prices I have ever seen as they do not accept credit cards or checks...just cash and debit cards and pass on the savings to their customers.

The only time I remember paying .25 cents for one was in Del Rio at Walmart during Cinco de Mayo and I bought a bunch...have never seen them that affordable since except in Mexico but you can not bring avocados to the USA unless they cut them in half and take the seed out as many people do.

During Thanksgiving, I saw the ad on Flipp and could not believe my eyes...five for a dollar! Here is the link to this week's ad where they are four for a dollar.

    2. I don't remember when I've seen avocados at 4/$1.00 in Sacramento! But then I haven't been out shopping for a while.

    3. Gypsy, I would be interested to know how much they sell for in California considering that is where the majority of avocados are grown in the USA.

In Texas, ours come from Mexico.

  3. Here in Austin the Turkey Jumbo franks are still 1.28. I just had 2 for supper tonight. I heated up some HEB Refried black beans added some HEB medium salsa. I then sliced the 2 franks in half, heated them up, toasted 2 slices of bread, spread the beans with salsa on a slice of bread, added some shredded cheese, placed the franks on the beans, spread some mustard on the other slice and placed on top on the franks, Had me a Mexican hot dog sandwich. Yummy.

    1. Your Mexican hot dog sandwich sounds delicious, I may have to try that myself!

Those turkey jumbo franks are great I cut them up and use them on my salads, ramen soup, canned chili, and if I am not feeling too lazy I make scrambled eggs with them.

    1. Thank you, I found out about his passing earlier today in Shadowmoss's (Paula's) blog "In the Shadows".

She, like myself, go a long time in between posts, and the news of his passing came as a shock. May he rest in peace. You do not say who you are but thank you for reaching out to me.
