Barricaded

Saturday night another round of strong thunderstorm moved into the area.  I lost the TV signal at 12:20 a.m. and decided to go to bed.  I woke up in the middle of the night and turned around to see what time it was only to see the alarm clock was blank...yep, the power had gone out sometime during the evening.  Got up to check on mother and saw that it was 6:00 a.m.

The electricity did not come back on until 11:32 a.m.  I later learned that it was a very heavy storm and that 5.49 inches of rain had fallen in the area. I had been busy in the yard all day...No, I did not pull weeds...I raked leaves and filled four 52 pound dog food bags with them, trash and rocks. I was so tired I did not hear anything or rather I heard it but it was like in the distance.

Why rake leaves and not pull weeds?  In heavy rain the leaves float down to the main gate and get stuck there.  Maybe I will tackle the weeds after it all dries out?

There was an early Spurs game on Sunday (Utah vs Spurs) so decided to pick us up something to eat. I did not get far as the entrance to the sub-division was barricaded due to the high water.

It used to be worst until they fixed it two years ago but I guess 5.49 inches of rain was a bit much for this mini dam. I parked the car and walked the bridge to take a few pictures.  This is known as the "Duck Pond" and serves as the unofficial zoo for the area.

You will always find people with children coming to feed the ducks. This one guy was very boisterous but I had nothing to offer him.

I guess this person is lucky their truck did not get carried away by the current.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Issues

It has been one set back after another lately.  Hate to write negative posts but as you know this blog also serves as my cyber journal and I need to document several issues while they are still fresh on my mind.

Just when I thought that eye technician/surgery coordinator could not be any more incompetent...he proves me wrong!

Before I continue to relay the facts I need to make a clarification...you will see why later.  My mother has a plain Jane landline telephone.  She has no call waiting, call forwarding or long distance service on her line.

Before I dumped Time Warner Cable, we used Magicjack to make long distance calls.  I truly loved that service and would highly recommend it to anyone.  Then I made the mistake of switching to DISH as our TV and Internet provider.  MagicJack requires a high speed line and DISH speeds...at least in my area are equivalent to dial-up...so I had to cancel my subscription.

In reality we have never needed to make many long distance calls.  Our relatives, friends and acquaintances call us.  Three years ago when my mother had back surgery in San Angelo, the need for a cell phone became evident.  At the suggestion of one of my readers I purchased a no frills Tracfone, the type that you add talking time when you run out of minutes and you are not tied to a monthly bill or a two year contract.

As nice as it is to have this little telephone for use in case of an emergency...it does not work well from home because we live outside of the city limits and there are no cell phone towers in the vicinity.  My neighbors come out into their yards to get a better signal and they have a lot of dropped calls, no matter the carrier.  Their phones work great once you enter the city limits of Del Rio.

Now back to the incompetent eye technician/surgery coordinator.  I decided to read all the fine print he had mother sign.  I did not like that it stated that the surgery could be performed by an "alternate doctor".  Her surgery is supposed to take place at 4:30 p.m. which depending on how many patients he is operating on might make the "alternate doctor" a very real possibility. I had another question regarding her arrival time, why did she have to arrive at 4:30 p.m. when her surgery is scheduled at that time...shouldn't she arrive sooner?

Now how do I contact him when we have no long distance service, the cell wont work out here in the county and he wont answer my e-mails?  Skype!

Called him on Tuesday July 19th to make sure he had received the medical clearance from her doctor that was faxed to him on Friday July 15th.  He stated that he had and while it was filled out, it was not signed. Where was he supposed to sign it, when the form is so badly designed?  It only said nurse or doctor's initials and told him so.  Contacted her former Uvalde doctor and got that taken care of.

Never heard back from him so I called him on Friday. To my surprise he answered and we could both hear each other perfectly.  That is until he told me that she was scheduled for surgery at 11:00 a.m.  I was furious...just when was he planning on letting me know?  Inexplicably...he couldn't hear me anymore!

According to him, he changed it because I had request it!  I never requested anything, I just wanted clarification of the arrival time and the possibility that the surgery would be performed by another doctor.  For the second time I asked him why he did not contact me about the change...you guess it...he again could not hear me!  This dude is an incompetent fool and needs to be fired!!!

I was very surprised to receive a call from him on Monday morning.  He was inquiring if I had started the drops that need to be administered to the eye that will be operated.  Told him I had started them on Sunday but her eye was red and irritated.  Was told to discontinue them and he would send the pharmacy a prescription for some other drops.

Yesterday the internet went down just before noon and I lost my only form of communication.  As much as I hate to, I might have to break down and actually buy me a telephone that works out here in southern Val Verde county.

Early this morning at 12:25 a.m. I was watching TV when the electricity went out.  Thank goodness for my solar lights that I place in the hallway and the bathroom.  Most people were asleep but I am sure many woke up when their air conditioners quit working.  It was 91 degrees and it was after midnight.  I woke up at 3:30 a.m. when the cold air hit me and I once again covered myself with a sheet.

Only good thing about the power outage is that it fixed the internet issues, even though I had disconnected the modem several times in my attempt to remedy the problem.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Storms, Heat, no Electricity

Yesterday it got to 90 degrees and the humidity was stifling, for a while there I thought I was back in Houston.  We had storms last night as well as this morning.

I slept with the fan on since up until this morning we had not turned the air conditioner on for the season.  I heard a big bang and then the breeze from my fan ceased.  Yep, the transformer blew and we were left with no electricity.  It did not come back on for almost three hours.

Could not call it in or go online to report it as I would have to have power to do that, so I went back to sleep.  It got to 89 degrees so this afternoon the A/C officially came on.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Spurs Corner

I am so proud of my Spurs!  They have been playing so well :)

I am like a kid at a candy store watching all the different teams giving it all they got.  Some are disappointments but that's the playoffs.

Headache / No Electricity

In my younger days I used to suffer from headaches rather frequently.  One of the positive aspects of my retirement was that they seemed to decrease both in frequency and intensity. Yesterday and earlier today, it came back with a vengeance.

Was in the mist of writing this when the lights went out at 12:48 a.m. on Sunday morning.  I have no idea why, so I am without Internet service and down to 46% of my battery.  At least I have my Wakawaka night light as well as my Harbor Freight Solar Shed light that I use in the hallway to light the way to the bathroom...something that will come in handy tonight.

Funny, instead of Mexico being without electricity...it is us in the United States of America, in particular in southern Val Verde county where this happens quite often.  It is pitch black outside except for the lights in Ciudad Acuña shining brightly...go figure!

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Cyber Journal Note:   Lights came back on at 2:05 a.m. Sunday morning.

Did we skip Spring?

I know Texas is hot but it seems like every year the heat begins way before it should.  Friday, March 30th it was 92 degrees and Saturday March 31st it got to a whopping 96 degrees.

I do not know what the temperature was today because the weather channel will not report today’s official high until tomorrow but I can tell you it was equally hot.  To make matters worst the electricity went out at 6:00 p.m. and did not come back on till 9:06 p.m.  Why?  I have no idea.  It rained maybe three drops but we did have a nice lighting and thunder show but not bad enough to have caused the grid to go out.

I must admit I did get a little concerned because I brought back a lot a perishable food from Houston.  The electricity going out for a couple of hours including one time up to 24 hours is common place in Del Rio and even more common in southern Val Verde County.  Funny we were all in the dark but could see the lights in Mexico shining brightly…now there is something wrong with that!

I was looking at my last post and I see that there is two things underlined in blue and with a clicky (something I have no idea how to do), is this something new from Google?  Gee, I sure hope not.

How funny, it was there when I used Google Chrome but now that I am using Internet Explorer, I do not see it…weird!

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

No Electricity

Short post tonight.  The lights went out in our area around 9:00 p.m. and it is now around 12:48 a.m.  Do not know if this is just in the county or if the city is also affected.

This would not be an issue if tonight were not going to be the coldest night in the season.  It is expected to be 28 degrees tonight or so that is what the weatherman is saying and you know how I feel about weather forecasters.

One good thing about being a procrastinator is that I still have not put away my Terlingua stuff so was able to find my flashlights and camping lantern without too much problem.

Wanted to welcome long time blogger friend Tffnguy for signing on as a follower.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua dreams.

Burning Man 2011

A couple of years ago I was researching how to make my ice chest more efficient in extreme temperatures.  I came upon a thread from the Burning Man website which had some excellent tips.  I became intrigued by the name of this event and set out to research it further.  I was blown away by all the preparation, effort, imagination and expense that people go through just to be able to participate in this weeklong festivity.

It is an event of grand magnitude that takes place in Black Rock City, Nevada in the middle of the desert.  It is located on an old ancient lakebed, which is commonly referred to as the playa (it means beach in Spanish).   People not just from the United States but  from all over the world attend this annual gathering.

This is not for everyone.  The environment is harsh from extreme high temperatures (it is the desert after all) to extreme nighttime drops; hurricane strength windstorms that cause white outs.  This is also a leave no trace event, which means you, take everything you brought with you including your trash and gray water.  Only amenity provided is port-a-potties.

If you are still reading this you are probably wondering, who would want to go there?  I sure would!!!  But due to circumstances beyond my control I am not able to do so at this time.  However it will go in my list of things I would like to do before I die.  Forgot to mention that it is a clothing optional event, and NO if I ever go I don’t plan on getting naked :D

Burning Man 2011 begins tonight at 12:01 a.m. and concludes on Labor Day.  Here is a link to their web page:

Here is a link to pictures of past Burning Mans – if you are offended by nudity then perhaps you might not want to look at the various albums on this link.
