Finally...RAIN!!!

After days, weeks, and months of severe drought conditions in my little corner of southern Val Verde County...the sky opened up and gave us some much-needed liquid gold in the early morning hours of Tuesday, October 24th, as well as today. If we are lucky the rain will continue on and off for a couple more days.

My primitive rain catchment is full, and I am using all types of containers to bottle up this precious liquid.

The temperatures are still warm so the A/C has not been turned off. However, that will soon change as a cold front is expected to arrive next week.

Good night. May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Spurs Corner

I am on pins and needles looking forward to the first Spurs game of the regular NBA season. In Del Rio, we get out local channels from San Antonio, Texas a city 144 miles east of us. Alamo City residents as well as all the residents of areas that get their programming are looking forward to this much-anticipated game and seeing Victor Wembanyama's first official game as a Spur.

Glad it is over and done with...

I do not know about you but I for one am thrilled that the holidays are over and done with for another year. I can go to the grocery store and have my pick of parking spaces, no long lines waiting to buy stamps at the post office...really no long lines anywhere!

I hope you had a safe and enjoyable New Year's Eve. This is my fourth year watching the ball drop in New York City on CNN.  It was funny watching Anderson Cooper doing tequila shots with Andy Cohen.  Anderson does not drink very often and you could tell he was buzzing while Andy was as normal as could be.

I suppose my recliner was way too comfortable that I fell asleep waking up either 6 or 10 seconds before the ball drop. They had coverage from different parts of the country and I wanted to stay up for the Central Standard Time one with Brooke Baldwin and Don Lemon but fell asleep once more.

I still have beer and wine that I brought back from the Chili Cook-off and was considering having a beer to toast the New Year but I much prefer sleeping.  I had the television on high to mask the fireworks but it was obvious when the New Year reached our area.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Spurs Corner

I taped the Spurs vs Golden States Warriors game last night since I was watching the New Year's coverage. I woke up at 7:30 a.m. to watch it only to find that it went into overtime. For the fourth or is it fifth time this month we have gone into overtime!

The darn thing stopped taping on the last 30 seconds of OT...I was livid!!!  I wanted to throw something at the television but considering I just bought it I decided to watch the recap on my cellphone.  What was my surprise when the darn thing would not turn on as it has finally DIED...grrrrrrrr!!!

I could have gone online but chose not to as I had a lot of other things to tackle today.  It wasn't until the afternoon news that I learned we WON.  I did go online later this evening and died laughing when others were doing Google searches of the last minute of the OT game...guess their DVR did not record it either!

My friends are Houston Rocket fans so doubt they would read Spurs Corner but if you do DO NOT call my cell...call me on our landline phone!

Where has this month gone?

I can not believe how fast this month has gone by.  I often wonder how I ever managed to do all I did when I had a full-time job and now that I do not work I can not accomplish half of what I used to then.

Was checking some Black Friday deals on point and shoot cameras but there were few.  I was surprised that the Kodak camera I bought last year at Walmart for the same event is on sale once more...either no one bought them but dumb me or they were a hit so they decided to repeat.

I am happy to report that I have finally been getting some significant sleep. Last night I slept for ten hours!  Do you know how long it has been since I managed to do that?  A long time!

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Tonight was the first time I was able to watch a game from start to finish. Glad we finally won one!

Tired / Busy days / Spurs Corner

I have not been feeling well lately in particular when I have more than one busy day in a row.  An out-of-town trip on Monday and a very busy Tuesday. Once again the weather forecasters got it wrong and we did not receive the rains that were expected or I would not have made two trips into town to run all the errands I needed to get to yesterday.

The only positive was that I have been going to sleep early and sleeping soundly though I am wide awake by 5:00 a.m.  The sun is not even up at that hour!

Finally took the old microwave and a TV to the recycling center.  I need to get rid of more stuff but that is a subject for another post.

As if I did not have enough on my plate now I have four more problems on my hands http://mylittlewalter.blogspot.com/2019/07/katie-brought-her-kittens.html

I am so tired I think I am going to once again call it a night early.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Spurs Corner

I must admit I was a little surprised Tim Duncan was named assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs.  Perhaps I should not be as he has been working out with the new guys since his retirement and at least now he is being paid for it.

Though I see him as a laid back type of person not able to yell or curse out players like many coaches have to do.  Nor do I see him wearing suits during game days.

April 12, 2019 trip to Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila - México - Part I

This past Tuesday (April 8th) when I went to take Nico for his post-surgery check-up I was able to land an appointment for Paquito to have the same operation (neutering).  Though I frown on Friday trips to Ciudad Acuña because so many people head out that way, it usually isn't until the afternoon that they start arriving in masses.

Checked my now favorite link  Border Wait Times and there was a 60-minute delay to cross into Del Rio but since I was headed to México it did not matter.  I have tried to find a link to Mexican Border Crossing Wait Times along the Texas-Mexico border but only found some for Baja California and they only list a telephone number.

Had every intention of just dropping Paquito off and returning to Del Rio but when I crossed into México the lines to cross to the USA spilled back to beyond the Mexican toll booths.  It is a good thing that they built this new Mexican Customs facility because it can absorb the long lines that previously would bring traffic to a halt extending up to five streets deep.

Del Rio has another International Bridge located on the road to Amistad Dam.  Its hours of operation are from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and you do not have to pay a toll either way to cross it.

It was a little after 9:00 a.m. and the wait time had risen to 80 minutes on the main International Bridge.  If you have been reading me for a while you know that I dislike waiting in line for ANYTHING.  Decided to run some errands to kill time until they opened up the Amistad Dam Port of Entry.

Headed to Soriana a large Mexican department store that I would liken to a Target.  It is large, well stocked, clean, has ample parking space and most importantly no crowds.

Before I post pictures of items I want to first post the Exchange Rates for today that have been holding steady for a few weeks.

Compra = Buy -------> they will buy your American Dollar for $17.30
Venta = Sell ----------> they will sell you an American Dollar for $18.70

I had to smile when I saw this new Coca-Cola with no sugar.  If there is something that Americans like is Mexican Coca-Cola that is made with cane sugar and not high fructose corn syrup like in the USA.  The Mexican government has been making strides to lower childhood obesity rate which depending on the study rates them first or second in the world.

29.15 Mexican Pesos divided by 17.30 exchange rate
 equals $1.69 USD for a 2.5-liter bottle

For the ladies or why not also gentlemen, México has very affordable prices on hair dyes because although they are American brands they are manufactured in México.

$39.00 Mexican Pesos divided by 17.30 exchange rate
equals $2.25 USD

These two single burner cooktops are Mexican made and I do not know about you but I rather buy Mexican than low-quality Chinese products.  I do not mean that in a disrespectful way, just facts.

$20.18 and $14.45 USD

For those who happen to be beer lovers like myself, there are always beer bargains but you have to take into account that you have to pay Texas Liquor Taxes when you bring them back to the states. Except at the Amistad Dam Port of Entry because they do NOT have a liquor tax collection booth...but you MUST declare it or you will be subjected to a steep fine.  I personally buy my beer at Stripes in Del Rio much cheaper than at HEB or Walmart.

Tecate Light 12 pack $8.67 USD
Soriana also has a Pemex gasoline station on its premises.  I do not know how much it goes for as I never buy gasoline in México.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Spurs Corner

This evening at 9:30 p.m. Central Time our Spurs will play the Denver Nuggets in the first game in the First Round of the 2019 NBA Playoffs.

I am a little concerned since we do not play well on the road and Denver is a tough city to play at not necessarily because of the opponents but due to its high altitude.

Go Spurs Go!!!

Record breaking temperatures today

On my previous post, I mentioned that the weather guys were forecasting it would reach 103 degrees today.  Little did I suspect it would reach 107 degrees (41.6666 Celsius) breaking the record for this day by 5 degrees.

I had no intention of leaving the house but I had totally forgotten that Easter was just around the corner and unless I actually wanted to have to drive to Austin, Texas, I needed to mail off some documents TODAY.

Headed to the library to make copies then made a mad dash to the post office. Thanks to the exorbitant temperatures there was only one person in line when I arrived. Had time to fill out a return receipt request, chat with the lady postal employee all the while not having another person come in during that interval.

Drove back to the library as Wednesday is the day they publish the Police Blotter in the local newspaper. Why am I not surprised that the son of the nosy neighbor (the guy who has beautiful trees as he runs and grabs a garden hose whenever something is going on outside) was arrested last Friday?  This guy lives next door to the drunk neighbor.

The library was packed, I suspect many enjoying the very cold A/C such as myself, there is no way I could afford to have it this cold at home.  It was so cold I actually considered going to my car to get my jacket.

To be honest I felt the heat more yesterday than I did today perhaps because I had to run so many errands yesterday and be in the heat longer.

At least tomorrow the high is expected to reach only 85 degrees (29.4444 Celcius).

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

We played our last regular season game this evening against the Dallas Mavericks.  I am so proud of the Spurs as well as fans for giving Dirk Nowitzki a classy, respectful and memorable send-off.

Undoubtedly a future Hall of Famer, I wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Emanuel David Ginóbili

I have yet to figure out how to best navigate around Pinterest. Most website I frequent like Home Depot, Target, Tractor & Supply, Walmart, etc, etc. will sooner or later ask if you would like to give your input about their website.  Not so Pinterest or at least it has not asked me.

If I could give my input I would ask why they saturate the e-mails they send me with so many pins many of which are duplicates or triplicates of others.  It takes me like twenty minutes or more just to read one of their e-mails so I usually do not.

Most mornings are cool and cloudy but by the afternoon the sun usually makes an appearance.  I am charging my solar lights as I type so I can have night lights.

I wanted to run a couple of errands today but I had to work on other things and it got late.  No way I am going to the store after six o'clock on a Friday.

We are supposed to have a mild cold front this weekend.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Last night was the jersey retirement ceremony for our beloved San Antonio Spur Emanuel David Ginóbili's better know as Manú Ginóbili.

HEB gave out free kleenex boxes to all attendee's. It was emotional at times but I did not cry!
He was instrumental in our Spurs winning four of our five NBA Championships.

A plus to being bilingual is that I understood everything he said in Spanish in particular when he thanked his wife.

In honor of his jersey retirement, I have let Betty Boop go on vacation and I will sport his icon for a while. Gracias Manú.

The calm before the storm

These past couple of days we have had wonderful temperatures in the low to high 80's.  However, the weather is going to take a sharp turn both in temperatures as in severity starting this evening.  We are expecting high winds, severe thunderstorms, one-inch hail and a slight possibility of tornados.

In the insomnia front, it has taken another strange turn. I am used to going online after midnight, making my posts as well as reading the blogs I follow until four or five in the morning.  Lately, I am falling asleep watching the ten o'clock news and barely making it to eleven o'clock. On the downside, I am wide awake by four or five o'clock in the morning.

George, if you are reading me (Our Awesome Travels)...as unbelievable as it might seem I am getting up earlier than you!  Of course, I do not accomplish as much as you do in a day...will have to work on that.

HEB does not open until 6:00 a.m. so I took the opportunity and headed out early to stock up on larger size salad (they do not have that at little HEB) and basically have a much better selection as you would expect the larger size store to have.

The only bad thing is that being Sunday in Texas you can not buy beer until noon.  That is a silly law enacted decades ago to make Sunday a day of rest and going to church.  In Texas, the outdated "Blue Laws" does not allow for residents to buy hard liquor or a car on Sunday. Now, how silly is that? Ran several more errands so I will not have to be out and about in bad weather.

Telemundo has a daily segment in their newscast that gives the wait times to cross back to the USA both for Eagle Pass as well as Del Rio, Texas.  Yesterday at 5:00 p.m. it was 2 hours 15 minutes and today it was 1 hour and 15 minutes.  That is another reason why I chose to stock up today as I had forgotten all about Spring Break and the havoc it wreaks.  My grocery run to Mexico will have to be put on hold.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

The first quarter did not look promising but somehow we pulled another win tonight.

I love how the bats take the attention away from the game by making their grand entrance in the middle of the action :)

Streaming services / rising cable costs

Both yesterday and today we have had sunny skies and temperatures in the high 60's.  However, the wind kind of ruined it for me and I took a day off.  Sat down to watch some of the shows I taped on the DVR.

Speaking of DVR...I do not know what is wrong with the remote...have to program shows by going online.  Hope they do not charge me to replace it.

I bundle internet, cable and telephone services to get a better price but I noticed that each month it goes up not by much but it does increase.  What I can not do without is the internet.  These days there are a lot of streaming services to be able to watch my shows online.  Do any of you use these? If you do are you able to watch NBA games?

Have to take care of a lot of things this week that I have been putting off.  Can hardly believe this month is almost over with.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

What is happening with my Spurs?  We got beat tonight and significantly by the second-worst team in the league.  I had a bad feeling from the start, oh well hopefully we will do better tomorrow?

Dependent on a To Do List

For some reason, I have been waking up very early lately.  Have I mentioned that I am not a morning person?  I even considered driving to Stripes to buy breakfast tacos and hot chocolate...but the thought of having to get dressed and then put on make-up made me change my mind.

These days I need to make a To Do List or I will forget a thing or two. Yesterday I forgot to go by the bank!  So like it or not I had to make another trip to town this afternoon.

This is the third time I go to Dollar Tree looking for bread but found none.  However, I found so many other items...I saved a ton!

I was reading a new blog to me "Our Awesome Travels"  https://geosuzie.blogspot.com/2019/02/blue-sunny-skies-still-cool-wind-silly.html
and they blogged about their trip to a local pizzeria called "Silly Al's Pizza".

It has been a while since I had pizza so I headed to Domino's and came home with one. Truth be told it was not that good...too bad Silly Al's Pizza is very far away :-(

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

What can I say?  You can not win a game if you have so many turnovers. Teams need to be able to win on the road!!!

Why would they want to attack the City of Del Rio?

The talk around town is all about the Ransomware Attack the City of Del Rio computer system recently suffered at the hands of cybercriminals.  Why in the world would they want to target us? All payments are being done manually.  They still do not know if anyone's financial data has been compromised. The good thing is that the FBI and Secret Service are now involved.

It has been cool at night, we have actually been having winter-like temperatures...I sure do not want to see the electric bill this month, last months was bad enough!

Good night. May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Spurs Corner

This evening I did not realize the Spurs game was being shown on two channels.  A local San Antonio channel and nationally on ESPN.  I had it on ESPN, I can not believe how dismissive the male sportscasters were to the comments made by Doris Burke.

Belinelli and Bertans were great tonight.  Held my breath on the last play of the game.  Glad we got a win this evening!

Chilly

It has been a little chilly this past couple of days but fortunate that the rain was on the light side and that the icy conditions did not materialize.

Yesterday I made Caldo de Pollo (chicken soup) and it actually came out ok, I would give myself a C+.

I am so glad I stocked up on groceries because I do not want to be out in this weather.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

I am really looking forward to tonight's game against the Toronto Raptors.  Do not promise that I won't boo Kawhi even if only from my bedroom :D

This evening I watched the OKC Thunder vs LA Lakers and their fans booed  Paul George and he was never even part of the Lakers roster!

A good day to stay inside

The strong winds began at 10:02 a.m. and it got hairy there for a while. Even the cats slept in. I finally had the opportunity to catch up on indoor stuff.

One of those things was to check the current insurance rates in the Health Insurance Marketplace. The cheapest plan I found was $773.88 monthly...are they serious?  This plan is not even accepted at the medical practice I go to.

Guess I will once again go uninsured. Even the most expensive plan is not accepted at my doctor's and at $1,324.83 monthly completely out of my reach. I am not complaining though because including with prescriptions I might spend $1,000.00 yearly going to the doctor in Del Rio but getting my labs done in Mexico.

This evening the temperatures dropped quite a bit at least it felt like that for us Texans who are not used to cold weather.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

We are on a roll...38 point blowout against the Clippers!

Loved seeing Boban Marjanovic and I wasn't the only one as many Spur fans gave him a standing ovation when he was inserted into the game.  Do not see that happening when Kawhi comes to town.

Congratulations to Davis Bertans and his wife on the birth of their first child.

Shamed at a Stripes store

What a week it has been!  We went from warm sunny days to cloudy, rainy and chilly ones. I am not complaining as the rest of the nation is under the grip of Mr. Winter even though we are technically still in Autumn.

Drove into town a couple of days ago with the intention of doing some shopping at HEB but the parking lot was so darn packed I just drove past it. Decided to stop at Stripes (convenience store/gasoline station) to pick up some lunch as I am tired of eating canned goods for lunch and dinner.

It was past 2:00 p.m. so the selection was limited but still better than the alternative. I was the only one in line so took my time as the girl took my order but soon more people arrived. I went from ordering one lunch plate to ordering four. The girl that took my order knows me (as a customer) and remarked...guess you aren't planning on cooking for a while...an older lady in back of me asked...doesn't your husband complain for not getting a home cooked meal?  I replied, "I am not married Ma'am". Then this little old man said "and she is not going to get married unless she learns to cook!" then winked at me.  Was I just shamed at a Stripes for not cooking by two people who were also buying their meal there?

With my back problems, I can no longer lift a twelve-pack of beer so have been buying six-packs. Would you believe beer is cheaper at Stripes than at HEB or Walmart?  Actually, Walmart has the highest price.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

I certainly enjoyed watching The Spurs play like it was the 2014 Finals these last two games. We got revenge on both the LA Lakers and Utah Jazz.

Another beautiful day

It was another beautiful sunny day. Got a second pick-up reminder from Walmart so decided to head that way but wanted to stop at Whataburger for a late lunch. It was packed and their parking spaces are much too narrow.  I guess I could have parked next door at my mother's optometrist's office but decided to pass.

I asked mother what she wanted to eat for dinner and she said pizza which surprised me. I guess she thought that is what I wanted as she had no idea I was going to eat at Whataburger.  I usually purchase mine at Domino's just personal preference.

The girl that took my order was not very bright. I had to repeat my order three times. She said it would be ready in 20 minutes and it took 45.  I ordered one pizza and they made two. I ordered a Philly steak sandwich ...she gave me something else with pineapple and jalapeños. The only thing she got right was the pasta and that is only because they did not bake it and I had to wait some more.  Domino's if you are listening...please turn down the music it might help your order takers. Note to self:  Do not order pizza on a Spurs game day.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

We are finally on track again. Though I am a little worried about our upcoming game with Utah on Tuesday.

Who schedules the NBA games?  It does not make any sense to me that we have to play the Lakers on Wednesday in Los Angeles and then turn around and play them again on Friday in San Antonio.

So how many of you participated in Cyber Monday?

I woke up early and went online to see if I could find a comparable 40" TV set for under $100.00 that Walmart was out of stock of during Black Friday.  Did not find such a bargain so I bought what I usually buy on Cyber Monday...affordable Micro SDHC cards. My contribution to Cyber Monday was $12.00.

Good night. May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Spurs Corner

Why can we not close out games in the fourth quarter?  A Spurs fan has to have nerves of steel to watch a game.  I really thought we were going to lose tonight and would of if that guy had made that last shot.  A win is a win even if it was only by one point. I think "curanderas" were busy at work tonight and earned every penny!

While watching the game the announcers mentioned that Spurs.com was also having a Cyber Monday sale so went to check it out. Why in the world do we still have Kawhi Leonard merchandise available?  Who would wear it?  I would not even take it if they gave it to me for free...just my two cents on that subject!

Could not talk myself into driving to town

As hard as I tried I just could not talk myself into driving to town.  I need to go pick-up mother's medication but she still has a three-day supply before she runs out. I tell you, I am one of the world's worst procrastinators!

My back pain has come back and I have no idea why since it is not like I have been doing any strenuous activity apart from screaming at the cats...but that is another story...you can read about it in my other blog.

I do not know how many of you ever watched "Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown". This his last season prior to his death by suicide he did a segment on West Texas. Of course, he visited Terlingua, Alpine, Marfa, Marathon, Sanderson, Santa Elena Canyon (in Big Bend National Park), Presidio, Texas as well as cross the border to Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico. If you have a chance I recommend you watch it. Here is a preview:

So much for Walmart Pre-Black Friday Online...

I found two items in the Walmart Black Friday Ad that I just could not do without...actually I could of...just thought they were good buys.  I saved them to my personal list a week ago but noticed that one of them said it was Out of Stock, how can it be out of stock when the sale has not even begun?

Surely they would re-stock for this evening's Pre-Black Friday online sale that started tonight at 9:00 p.m. CST?  I logged in at 8:30 p.m. so I could quickly place my order and be done with.  I submitted my purchase at 9:01 p.m. but got that little thing that goes around and around and the following message:

We're having trouble with your request. Please wait a moment and then try again.

The item that was out of stock last week was still out of stock. It was a 40" TV for the kitchen where I usually watch my Spurs games while I wash dishes or clean up after dinner. I currently have an old 26" LED television that I bought when television first went digital while I was visiting in Houston and unable to watch my Colombian Telenovelas (soap operas).  At $99.00 it was a steal and with my poor eyesight would have made a big difference in enjoying my Spurs games.

The other item was a Kodak Pixpro Long Zoom Digital Camera for $99.00 as I have wanted to replace my $35.00 Polaroid Digital Camera for years after my good camera got fried as it sat inside my tent in Terlingua.  I was successful in purchasing this item, as I suppose most people use their cell phones for picture taking these days.

My 2011 hot tent that fried my camera

It took me 24 minutes to place my order but I am sure I was competing against millions of online shoppers this evening.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Tonight's game against the Memphis Grizzlies was a total sham...the referees did not call that last minute foul which was the same foul they had just finished calling against us. We got robbed!!!

Mosquitoes / Dog tie-out cable / Early Voting

With the cooler temperatures, the flies seem to have taken a hike but the mosquitoes have not gotten the memo and are still hanging around.  In particular those inside the house.  My mother is cold nature so the heater has been on since early this month.  I do not think we have ever turned on the heater so early in the season.

Need to wash some sheets and towels but the local laundromats are jammed packed.  I guess people are still behind on their laundry with the past rains.  Mother's clothesline is old and down to one line. If I were to hang anything heavy I am sure it would break.

While rounding up my camping gear ran into a new heavy-duty dog tie-out cable that I had bought when I cared for the stray dogs.  It was the perfect size and I was able to use it to hang a bedspread to dry.

Looks exactly like this one but I bought
mine at Tractor & Supply.

I finally made it to our local County Courthouse to cast my early vote.  I was pleased to see so many people participating in these mid-term elections. Please, fellow Texans and Americans make your voice be heard and go to the polls.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

It was another great game this evening. Unlike the last game, we played against the Lakers, this time we trailed most of the way but made a great comeback.

When did San Antonio have so many Laker fans?  I could not believe all the yellow jerseys and cheering going on...traitors!

A sliver of sun

After more than a week of cloudy, wet and gloomy weather we finally saw a sliver of sun if only for a while. I really needed to charge my Wakawaka and D-Light as I use them as nightlights and emergency lights for the frequent power outages that occur in this part of Val Verde County.

Wakawaka solar light
I just love my D-Light  it can also charge
a cell phone or tablet.

We had a 24 hour period to dry out and I took the opportunity to clean all the debris outside that was blocking the front gate.  I have been looking for my tent stakes and finally recalled that I put them in the trunk of dad's old car.

As soon as I opened the trunk the smell was awful and it was soaking wet.  I usually place beer cartons in the trunk of all my vehicles and that helped a lot.  However, I needed something else to aid in the cleanup. That is when I realized that my horse pine pellets would be perfect for this job.

Horse pine pellets soak all the moisture and remove the musty smell. With more rain on the way,  it will definitively come in handy.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

While we have only played two games...one we won, one we lost...I have a good feeling about our team and the new players.

Looking forward to the game tomorrow with the Lakers.
