More Bad Weather / Power Outage

Last night we were under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 11:00 p.m. but the ten o'clock news said that the watch would probably expire without being extended as the rains in Mexico would not make it across the border as the radar "seemed" to indicate.

I was watching The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon but dozing off and on as I waited for Late Night with Seth Meyers, who had a guest I was looking forward to seeing. It was around 11:40 p.m. when I was rudely awakened by thunder, lightning, wind, heavy rain, and pellets hitting the living room window. What the heck happened to the storms not reaching the border?

Five minutes later there is a big bang sound I am very familiar with and then the power went out. The explosive sound was from the transformer that is located between Mr. Joe's property and his noisy neighbor. I often report our frequent power outages but it had been a while since we last experienced a prolonged one.

I was very tired and just went to sleep...thank goodness for our solar lights! The next time I woke up it was 2:00 a.m. and the house was feeling stuffy as the power had not returned. I opened more windows as well as the front door and was puzzled to find that all the street lights were on including the lights in some houses. I could even hear the air conditioner of the house in front of mom's.

The only reason I knew Mr. Joe did not have power is that his motion lights which come on constantly probably triggered by the cats, never came on as I was in the front yard for a long while with Nicolás (my cat).

Around 4:00 a.m. some terrible wind gusts began and I went back inside glad that it was only wind and not rain and/or hail. The good thing about the wind is that it helped to cool the house down. The next time I woke up it was 5:10 a.m. and the power was still off.

I kept hearing a heavy-duty vehicle and when I opened my eyes my alarm clock was flashing and the time on the cable box told me it was 6:05 a.m. That is when I realized that the sound I was hearing was the trash truck at this ungodly hour while it was still dark outside. Lucky for me I had brought the trash can to the gate last night and the guy saw me running and waited for me...thank you!

I do not know what time the power came back on as it obviously took place sometime between 5:10 a.m. and 6:05 a.m. I was glad I did not go to HEB yesterday as I had made room in the freezer for a small container of ice cream. We were without electricity for at least six hours. I am glad it rained as the temperatures did not rise until the afternoon when the clouds cleared and the sun came out. We had a high of 95 degrees today.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Lots of rain / Started a Trend

While some parts of Texas have been getting hammered by both rain and hail we have been lucky and mostly have received beneficial showers. Last night at 4:00 a.m. we had a thunder and lightning show followed by a strong storm.

The weather guy said that if we did not receive rains from Mexico by midnight they would probably not make it into our part of the state. Since I do not trust the weather forecasters I made preparations to cover dad's old car in case we got hail like the Austin area did yesterday.

I have a funny anecdote to share, on Wednesday, May 19th they announced storms with the possibility of hail. I have my stash of cardboard boxes so I placed them over the old ones. The neighbor across the street started to do the same with his truck and his wife's car.  She then came out and yelled at him so he removed them from her vehicle.

When the hail arrived...thankfully it was only pea size...it was coming down hard and that poor man had to rush outside to cover his wife's windshield...jajajajajaja 😇

I on the other hand rushed outside but to find Muñeca (the little orange cat) since she is so small and I was afraid she would get hurt. She was frightened hiding in the back of the old washing machine so I grabbed her and brought her inside. She unlike her siblings is not afraid of me.

Yesterday two more neighbors joined the club and had their cars covered with cardboard and old bedspreads...and I am the one that started that trend last year after the hail storm broke dad's old car side mirrors and chipped the taillights. I'm sure I was the laughing stock of the block but now I have company :D

It has been very muggy with humidity levels in the '70s which is oppressive and temperatures in the mid 90's with a heat index in the triple digits.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Severe thunderstorms, hail, and we are under a tornado watch

Decided to do a post earlier than usual as we are expecting severe thunderstorms, hail, and are under a tornado watch. At least that was the plan but the bad weather hit us earlier than forecasted.

When I checked with AccuWeather they only gave me a one-minute warning of large hail.

This part of town was extremely lucky to have only had pea size hail. Unfortunately, Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila (border city with Del Rio) was pelted with golf and softball size hail and there was a lot of damage.

Yesterday I emptied the last of my water catchment in preparation for what was going to be tonight's storms. They almost filled up after the first storm and when the second one came around they overflowed.

Though you can barely make it out the hail is hitting the water catchment.

Right now (10:30 p.m.) San Antonio is being hit by large hail and is also under a severe thunderstorm warning and tornado alert. Earlier this evening Hondo and D'Hanis small towns close to San Antonio had a tornado touch down that left a lot of damage.

KENS-5 just lost power but their generator kicked in. I can hear the thunder outside. Right now they are concentrating on San Antonio weather as they should be, so I will post this before I lose power and try to see what the weather holds for us this evening.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

We got rain!

I have gotten to the point that I no longer believe weather forecasters...they are always wrong!  Kept on getting weather alerts this afternoon but 3:00 p.m. came and went and nothing.  Finally at 5:40 p.m. it began to pour and along with it came pea size hail.  Of course I could not find my camera so was not able to capture any of the hail.

Looking to the south of the property

My poor flowers :-(

This is the spot where my Kodiak Canvas tent used to be

Looking to the north of the property.
This is where Cliff and friends have so kindly freed
up a lot of room by cutting down pesky mesquites trees :-)

Per Weatherbug we got .06 of an inch but it seemed like a lot more.  The high today was 91 and the low 69 with winds at the peak of the storm from the NW at 38 mph.  It dropped 18 degrees real quick like.

Set up my rain catchment system for Dummies :D

I hope you too were the recipient of some liquid gold.  It was really needed in this part of West Texas.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.
