Free-range Chickens / Attacked by Fire Ants / Victor Wembanyama

Wednesday is trash day in our neighborhood and they have no set time for making their rounds. Sometimes they come very early other times not so much, I did not want to put the trash out because we were expecting showers last night/early this morning. The cats like to sleep on top of the trash can,  as it perches them high off the ground when sleeping on the back porch.

It did in fact rain but apparently not very much but that only worsened the humidity factor. One of the neighbor's (Walter's worthless former owner) free-range chicken and her chicks were making so much noise they woke me up. What is the fascination with having chickens when their feed is so expensive that you are better off purchasing the eggs at the store? Not to mention that he never asked permission to allow those chickens to come to my mother's house or for that matter the other neighbors' property.

You can see the black mother chicken but it is hard to see her chicks with the overgrown weeds and mesquite trees on the south side of the property. For clearing all this I will probably have to hire "Pollito" and his "drunk sidekick"...sigh...😒

I put out the trash, fed the cats, and set out to tackle the weeds when all of a sudden I felt a terrible pain in my foot. Though it has been a heck of a long time I instinctively knew I had fallen prey to a bite from fire ants...they do not call them that for nothing....grrrrr!!!!

I came inside and Googled what I was supposed to do.  After cleaning the area, applying lemon juice, and not feeling any comfort I slapped on some mint toothpaste and that eased the pain a bit. I was so mad I looked up how to kill them without poison. Boiled water and poured it on their mound though they do not actually have a mound but a hole in the ground. Did it work? Only for a while by the afternoon they were once again up and around. 😡

These are the rain totals we have had so far this month...

We are expecting more rain tomorrow and this weekend so do not know when I will get around to tackling the weeds. Unfortunately, I am having a lot of trouble trying to upload pictures to this post...I have no idea what is going on with Blogger...will try again tomorrow.

I wanted to congratulate the San Antonio Spurs for winning the lottery that allows them to select the first 2023 NBA draft pick Victor Wembanyama. He is a 7-foot-4, 19-year-old from France. Even CNN covered this story.

Even KSAT SA-Live had a good time with this story. They used a measuring tape to compare his height and arm span to one of their co-hosts...Jennifer Tobias-Struski.

San Antonio and surrounding area fans went crazy last night (I include myself) when it was announced that the Spurs got the first pick. People were out in the streets honking and celebrating like we had won another championship. Today fans were calling to buy season tickets all day long. It certainly feels great to receive some good news for a change!

On this happy note...Good night...May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Old bookshelves / Betty Boop Care Package

Wednesdays are trash day and yesterday I noticed I only had one small trash bag and as much as we pay for this service forced myself to rake leaves until I filled it up.  Yesterday was a hot day we had a high of 88 degrees.

The other day I almost bought a shoe rack when I remembered that we have three bookshelves from our Austin, Texas days.  I may be dating myself but back in the '60s HEB would issue double gold stamps on Wednesday that you posted to a small booklet and then saved enough to buy stuff at their specialty store that sold a variety of household articles. Anyone remember that?

I took it outside and cleaned it up saving myself a couple of dollars and in the process located three of my high school yearbooks.  Not particular pretty but will work for my intended purpose and will save my back and knees from having to dig under the bed for my shoes.

Here is a picture of the shoe rack I was going to buy when recalled that I had a similar one in the form of a bookshelf at home.

On a prior post, I mentioned that Ms. D (my best friend) eldest daughter Amanda had sent me a Betty Boop care package.  At the time of this picture, I was wearing one of the t-shirts she gifted me so it does not appear here.

Though the AARP bag I think came from Ms. D.  In my youth I would have killed for a BB Diary!
I started writing a diary when I was nine years old

The cold front arrived this morning but it hasn't been that bad. We had a low of 50 with a high of 65 degrees.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Mr. Joe's wife / Pollito / Heavy downpours

I mentioned on a prior post that Mr. Joe, mother's nice neighbor mowed along the outer fence line.  We have so many darn litterbugs that throw their trash out their car window but I had not had a chance to go pick it up.

Trash day in this part of the county is on Wednesday.  Looked out the window and the sky was really dark so decided to hurry up and go pick up the trash before the storms began.  Mr. Joe's wife came out rolling her own container to the curve and we got to talking.

Turns out she also goes to Ciudad Acuña for pretty much the same thing I do...doctors, labs, the vet and groceries.  The only difference is I go in the mornings or at noon and she prefers late in the afternoon. Told me she got home at 11:00 p.m. the other night after spending two and a half hours in line.

Pollito (the lawn man) drove by in his 18 wheeler dump truck and stopped to join the conversation though this is a narrow street and he was blocking a lane.  He asked me when I wanted him to come mow the weeds.  I told him in May but only if the ground was not wet because he had left ruts the last time from his tractor.  Also threw in that I would prefer if he could get it done in one or two days so it would all grow out evenly.  Last time it took him two and a half months...grrrrrrrrr!!

All of a sudden the skies opened up and we received a very heavy downpour. Thus, I did not get to pick up all the trash I had intended as we all headed different directions seeking cover.  By the afternoon the sun was out and we had beautiful blue skies while the temperatures were still in the '70s.  I knew it was going to probably be the last Spring Day we would enjoy in a while. Today as well as for the coming days we are expected to be in the '90s...sigh!... :-(

Last night I was so tired I fell asleep watching an NBA game I really wanted to see.  Was going to get up and make a post but decided my sleep was more important. I, therefore, can not wish you Terlingua Dreams because it is 1:36 p.m.  So have a nice afternoon instead.

A visit with Barney

The past two mornings have been foggy and drizzly but at least it has not been cold.  Today was trash day, I have avoided picking up the trash outside of our fence line that worthless people throw out their window but could not put it off any longer.

The weeds and grass have grown a lot since Pollito mowed them. I either have to tackle them myself or hire someone to do them...man I hate yard work!

We have a cold front on the way and I did not want to take a chance on Barney (OFM Adventures) leaving as I missed him by a couple of hours the last time he was in town...but not today!

We had a long and pleasant conversation. Barney is knowledgeable on just about any topic.  If you have never met him I highly recommend you drop by his campground if he is ever near your hometown.

Spurs Corner

With our two best players out of the line-up this evening and having to play the Golden State Warriors, it was no wonder KSAT12 sports anchor pretty much insinuated that everyone go to bed and check the highlights in the morning.

We had a fighting chance when we were only down two points before the half...then they went on a  run and pretty much dashed our hopes.

The second half was AWFUL!!! Maybe KSAT12's advice was not so bad.

Trash Day

Living in Houston I am used to having trash pick up twice a week.  It was the same here but a couple of years ago an out of town company was the successful low bidder and was awarded the city contract.  They provided us with a big trash can and cut back pick up to only once a week.

I am not an early riser so I usually set out the trash the night before rather than risk not waking up in time and having to wait another week, but not last night.  I had to find a way to trick myself into getting up early and cleaning up the carport and all the stuff that floated downhill last week.

I finally decided to throw away the spare keys to the car that I LOVED and was my faithful sidekick for twenty years.  It was the car of my dreams but I knew it would start having problems because of the age and mileage and it had to go.  So today’s trash had a little bit of a treasure in it.  Sometimes it is hard to let go but after two years it was time…
