Second Booster Shot / Calendars and Buttered Popcorn

I learned thanks to Ciudad Acuña's excellent newspaper El Zócalo a couple months back that the Texas National Guard would no longer be administering Covid-19 clinics at the local mall. You would now have to make arrangements at the three local pharmacies or get it from your doctor.  

On my last visit to my physician, it had only been two months since I had received my booster and he had told me that the Rural Health Clinic was still hosting some but he did not know for how much longer. Called them last month to inquire and was lucky enough to get an appointment for last Friday, August 5th.

The Rural Health Clinic is only open till noon on Fridays and at 12:01 p.m. they would start the vaccinations. I am glad I went early and that during the morning it was cloudy and there was a good breeze blowing. There were a lot of children and teenagers there as I believe school begins next week.

At least the lines were not as long as the ones at the Civic Center or the last one at the mall. However, that is not to say there was no drama with the kids. There was this four or five year old boy who was overweight and wanted his mother to carry him if she put him down he would start screaming and kicking, this woman had the patience of a saint. They were there to get his 14-year-old brother vaccinated and even he could barely stand his tantrums...why do I always get stuck near spoiled brats?

There were a lot of rich ladies from Ciudad Acuña getting vaccinated. How do I know they were from México? They dressed very nicely, were draped in expensive jewelry, had their designer purses, and spoke proper Spanish.  I also counted 11 license plates from the state of Coahuila in the parking lot.

I pulled a muscle about two months ago on my left arm and it is very tender so I opted to get the booster on my right arm even though I am right handed. Luckily I had no complications only soreness where the shot was administered.

The line continued to grow as I was leaving and the sun started to peak through the clouds.

I went to The Dollar Tree as I needed 2023 calendars and they go fast.

I found some buttered popcorn but only bought two...see I can have "willpower" when I want! 😄

 

I had every intention of going next door to Harbor Freight to get a free flashlight and to Ollie's but my feet said NO.

Walmart is next door so drove by to see what the going gasoline prices were for Friday, August 5th.

$3.499 for Unleaded
$4.589 for Diesel

A Saturday shopping spree

I do not ordinarily drive into town on the weekends but I was not able to run my errands during the week. My first stop was the Recycling Center as they close at noon on Saturday's.  Then I swung by the P.O. Box only to find it crammed full...yeap...it has been a while since I dropped by here.

On the way into town, I passed by the main HEB and the parking lot was overflowing because our border city neighbors from Ciudad Acuña come to do their shopping.  Since I still can not bring myself to go into Walmart after the El Paso mass shooting I headed to little HEB instead.

Few people there as most Del Rioans prefer the bigger store. Was totally out of lettuce for my salads and found a 50% off deal since the product use-by date expires tomorrow but it was not wilted so I think it will last a couple more days.

Then I headed to Fallas a store that sells factory irregular items at heavily discounted prices.  This is where earlier in the year I bought my $5.00 denim coat and jacket for my future trips to Terlingua.  As I have mentioned before Terlingua is not a place to make a fashion statement. Take inexpensive clothing that you would not mind if they got ruined or someone walked off with them. My purchase of the day was a .50 cent T-shirt.

Made a stop at the bank and then headed to Dollar Tree where I usually do most of my grocery shopping.  As I parked I noticed a banner at the former Sutherland's store that closed down about a year ago.  As I got closer I could not believe my eyes!  Did it really say what I thought it said?  YES...it DID!!!!!

I was just thinking the other day about making a special trip to San Antonio so I could buy some heavy-duty tarps for both the house and for camping.  Stuck my head to ask how long it would be till they opened and the guys working said from six to eight weeks.  I was so happy!

The Dollar Tree was full of Halloween merchandise...

They had a nice selection of cereals. Though I do not care for the taste of Maple at 19.8 oz this was a great buy and will also lower my cholesterol.

On another aisle, I found Peach Cheerios that indicated it was a Limited Edition.  Being Gluten-Free and at 10.8 ounces another great buy for a dollar as well at the Blueberry Chex cereal the largest box of the three at 20.3 oz.

Since I did not come on Friday I missed out on the bread selection. I did, however, purchase Nature's Own 8 Hot Dog Buns 100% Whole Wheat that I will use to prepare mini hoagies.

I was feeling a little light-headed as I had not had breakfast and it was 3:00 p.m. so stopped at Stripes which by this time has little selection but to my surprise still had food and bought us some lunch plates for an early dinner.

Rising gas prices / Dollar Tree / Yard Work

So glad I filled up at $2.249 because gasoline prices are on the upswing. Yesterday it was going for  $2.399 for regular unlead at HEB,

With temperatures being so high in particular the heat index levels, I have not wanted to leave the house.  However, I needed to run some errands that I could not put off for another day.  Glad I got that out of the way.

The Dollar Tree is not known for keeping the same merchandise on their shelves but they usually have bottled mushrooms or at least they have had them for over a year.  I use them on my salads but lately, there are none to be had.  If I were in Houston I would just go to another Dollar Tree but in Del Rio, I would have to drive either to Uvalde or Eagle Pass.  This is when I miss the big city :-(

Late yesterday afternoon (Saturday) I got some yard work done but not enough to make a dent. Will be calling Pollito soon.

Lower gas prices / Fly ribbon / Dollar Tree

Though I am not a morning person I am getting up early to beat the heat and humidity while taking care of my morning chores.  There are so many branches that fell during the Friday storm that I still need to pick up before trash day.

Had to run errands in town but got a late start.  As I drove by HEB was surprised that gasoline had gone down to $2.24 per gallon, that was not the case at Exxon, Stripes or Murphy Oil (Walmart).

I think I mentioned before that Del Rio has a fly, mosquito, and wasp epidemic...those suckers are everywhere.  I know I have fly ribbon from back when Walter (ex-horse of a neighbor to the south of mother's house).  Unable to locate it I went to buy some more at the dollar store...boy has the product gotten smaller...everything at the Dollar Tree has gotten smaller.

A couple of months ago I kidded that the Dollar Tree needed to change its name to The Three Dollar Store because with all the proposed tariffs on Chinese goods nothing is going to cost a dollar in the future.  I thought perhaps I had dreamt this but I actually saw a commercial for a store I had never heard of before...Five Below Store.  I suppose it is like the 99 Cents Only Store?

By the time I headed home I presume word had gotten out that HEB had the lowest gasoline price in town and there were LONG lines...you know my rule...so I went on my merry way.

The high today was 96 with a heat index of 104 degrees.
