Two long established businesses close their doors in Del Rio

Earlier this month I noticed a "Going Out of Business" banner as I drove down our main drag Veterans Blvd. For those that are not familiar with Del Rio, this was the former location of the second HEB store after Little HEB clearly became too small for the fast-growing population and before they built their large flagship store.

There are two businesses at this location and I was not sure which one was the affected one but as soon as I drove into the parking lot it became clear.

Unfortunately, it was Fallas, a store where I buy my camping clothes...you might recall my $5.00 blue jean duster as well as two of my $5.00 Terlingua coats. They sell surplus, factory irregulars, and overstock items from other vendors and manufacturers. I have purchased several pet beds for my cats at discount prices. This was the first store to bring Betty Boop merchandise to Del Rio of which I am a huge fan.

I was surprised they had so much inventory. One of their employees told me that all their Texas stores were closing and they had sent their merchandise to their Border Stores which are their top sellers.

They were liquidating everything including their clothing racks, fixtures, and equipment.

I will miss this store in particular during Chili Cook-off time when I could purchase clothing items for a mere $1.99 or less.

We are also saying goodbye to our local Sears store. This is the only store that will deliver an appliance and bring it into your home. When we bought our last refrigerator we found a better price at Home Depot but the deal breaker was that they would only deliver it to your door...you had to bring it in yourself...yeah, right with my bad back! 😒

Both stores will be missed by both Del Rioans as well as Ciudad Acuña residents.

Good night. May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Took a Day off...no politics, no Internet, no phones

Yesterday I woke up with mental overload. There are so many things going on at the same time some more worrisome than others but equally draining the little motivation and energy I have left. Decided to give myself the day off.

I did not turn on my usual cable news channels, avoided the local news, did not turn on the computer and let the answering machine do its job.

I worked on removing more weeds with the hula hoe and dealing with the cats in particular "that black cat" who is making me more stressed out by the day.  I will write about that when I get a chance at Walter's World.

I did, however, watch my Spurs and perhaps I should have avoided that as well. Though they won it was only by one point and I practically had a heart attack. Were it not because of these darn medications I would have had a couple of beers to celebrate and de-stress.

This morning I treated myself to the breakfast buffet at Sirloin Stockade. Yes, I know I am not supposed to eat bacon so sue me...it went well with Tabasco sauce and an unsweetened ice tea.

They ran out of Menudo so had to wait a while for the next batch but it was worth it.

I have mentioned that I buy most of my Terlingua clothes at a store called Fallas. They sell irregular items, factory rejects, and cheap crap from China. This is where I bought my $5.00 Terlingua coat and jacket last year.

Went to walk off my breakfast and ran into an item my uncle wants. They have the same items as Marshalls but at a much cheaper price. Though it would cost me more to mail it to him than the item itself.

He wants Christmas motif pajama pants.  They had them for $1.99 but I will have to find out what size he wears.

This pillow made me smile because I saw that on an Aunty Acid saying the other day :-)

I'm sorry, did I roll my eyes out loud?

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

A Saturday shopping spree

I do not ordinarily drive into town on the weekends but I was not able to run my errands during the week. My first stop was the Recycling Center as they close at noon on Saturday's.  Then I swung by the P.O. Box only to find it crammed full...yeap...it has been a while since I dropped by here.

On the way into town, I passed by the main HEB and the parking lot was overflowing because our border city neighbors from Ciudad Acuña come to do their shopping.  Since I still can not bring myself to go into Walmart after the El Paso mass shooting I headed to little HEB instead.

Few people there as most Del Rioans prefer the bigger store. Was totally out of lettuce for my salads and found a 50% off deal since the product use-by date expires tomorrow but it was not wilted so I think it will last a couple more days.

Then I headed to Fallas a store that sells factory irregular items at heavily discounted prices.  This is where earlier in the year I bought my $5.00 denim coat and jacket for my future trips to Terlingua.  As I have mentioned before Terlingua is not a place to make a fashion statement. Take inexpensive clothing that you would not mind if they got ruined or someone walked off with them. My purchase of the day was a .50 cent T-shirt.

Made a stop at the bank and then headed to Dollar Tree where I usually do most of my grocery shopping.  As I parked I noticed a banner at the former Sutherland's store that closed down about a year ago.  As I got closer I could not believe my eyes!  Did it really say what I thought it said?  YES...it DID!!!!!

I was just thinking the other day about making a special trip to San Antonio so I could buy some heavy-duty tarps for both the house and for camping.  Stuck my head to ask how long it would be till they opened and the guys working said from six to eight weeks.  I was so happy!

The Dollar Tree was full of Halloween merchandise...

They had a nice selection of cereals. Though I do not care for the taste of Maple at 19.8 oz this was a great buy and will also lower my cholesterol.

Cheerios Maple Cereal
On another aisle, I found Peach Cheerios that indicated it was a Limited Edition.  Being Gluten-Free and at 10.8 ounces another great buy for a dollar as well at the Blueberry Chex cereal the largest box of the three at 20.3 oz.

Since I did not come on Friday I missed out on the bread selection. I did, however, purchase Nature's Own 8 Hot Dog Buns 100% Whole Wheat that I will use to prepare mini hoagies.

Very little bread left on the shelves
I was feeling a little light-headed as I had not had breakfast and it was 3:00 p.m. so stopped at Stripes which by this time has little selection but to my surprise still had food and bought us some lunch plates for an early dinner.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.
