Our summer plagues

Every summer there seems to be either a fly, ant, or hornet plague in this area.  As a kid, we used to call them wasps.  I had noticed a small nest forming by the outside kitchen door but did not give it much thought. That is the main door I use to go to the backyard where the greater part of my chores take place.

I was carrying a load to hang on the clothesline when I felt a sharp pain in my right shoulder blade...darn thing had stung me without me even provoking it...grrrrrrr!!!  I was livid but as usual, had no idea where I had placed the hornet spray that the cable guy had gifted me some time ago so had to go buy some. The wasp/hornets are also in the trees so I have to be careful as I go by a select few.

There is also a larger nest that made themselves at home in one of the cardboard boxes that the cats play in. They must have also learned their lesson as they no longer go inside it. The next day, they tried to attack me again, but they went for my eyes and face. Lucky for me I had my regular glasses and my sunglasses topped off by my face shield as people stop when they see me outside to inquire about our cars that do not even have a "for sale sign". These days nobody seems to be wearing a face mask anymore, not that the people around here ever did.

To add insult to injury the darn mesquite pods have started falling with the heat and wind.  If you have been reading me for a while you know how I feel about these suckers!  It is demoralizing to rake a bunch, pick them up only for another wind gust to come along and you have to start from zero.

Every morning I try to be outside by 6:45 a.m. to beat the heat as I water the trees in an attempt to save them as last summer several succumbed to the heat and drought. While it has been in the triple-digits I can not forget that last summer it was even worse at least we have been the beneficiaries of several rainstorms.

In the early hours of last Tuesday, June 22nd I was awakened by thunder, lightning, and rain hitting the window. While KSAT-12 shows we received 1.73 inches, the Ciudad Acuña newspaper El Zócaló said Del Rio got 2.50 inches and electricity was out for 5 hours in various parts of town. Can you believe ours never went out? Not even a power spike!

I was able to once again top of my primitive rain catchment but now I have to get rid of a lot of it as next week more heavy rains are in the forecast.  I, therefore, have to go outside more often to water the trees and shrubs as I do not want to waste a single drop. This leads to another dilemma...how many times a day do I have to shower?  All last week it has been three times.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. The wasps have been getting worse over the last few years. Watch they don't get too aggressive.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

    1. While inconvenient, I am now avoiding going out the kitchen door because they are becoming more aggressive.

  2. Love the little jokes they all hit the mark espeicaily Auntie Acid. Those hornets are nasty little things. If that spectraside works as good as the weed killer you should be able to get rid of them quick. I try to get out that early in the morning also and tomorrow I really need to get to Walmart for a few things. At least you getting some rains come through.

    1. I had such a good laugh with Aunty Acid and the memes that I felt I had to share :-)

I have never tried the weed killer it would take gallons with all the weeds we have! Would you believe I misplaced the darn wasp and hornet spray? I swear my CRS gets worse by the day!

Be careful at Walmart, I went last week, and hardly anyone had a mask on.

  3. Those wasps are so scary. I don't think the hot weather makes them any friendlier, either. Have you heard about the so called "murder hornets" now presenting a problem in Washington State. Seriously scary and huge.
It is good to stock up on insecticides and keep them handy. Also don't wear floral prints or bright colors.
I see so many people not wearing their masks. Just because we are all tired of restrictions doesn't make the threat go away. And now the "new strains" are even more contagious. I am still keeping my distance and limiting my outings.
Love all your jokes!! I don't know how you manage to find just the right ones.
We were in the high eighties again today. It isn't miserable but it is way too hot for this early in the summer.
Stay safe and cool my friend.

    1. I have heard about the "murder hornets" that decapitate our American honey bees. They covered it extensively last year but had not heard any more about it until now that you bring it up.

I wear a lot of gray and black outfits (I have convinced myself this color makes me look thinner...Jajaja!!) I also wear bright color tops. For the life of me, I can not remember what color of tank top I was wearing when I got bitten.

I too am leary of the new strains so I am still wearing my two masks but because of the heat, I don't use my face shield when I go out...only when I am out in the yard watering the trees...to protect myself from idiot neighbors.

I was wondering if you had been affected by the ungodly high temperatures that have been affecting states close to you. Nice to learn that has not been the case.

Glad you enjoyed the jokes in these trying times I find laughter to be therapeutic.
