Bickering Politicians / More Covid Cases / Triple Digit Temperatures

Our COVID-19 cases are on the rise as well as the number of deaths. The obituary section has gotten longer and sadly two people I went to high school with have perished. Not making matters any better are the bickering back and forth between the Mayor of Del Rio and the Val Verde County judge with regards to the coronavirus.

My routine has remained the same getting up early so I can be outside by 7:00 a.m. watering the trees and doing yard work before the oppressive heat makes it unbearable. I overdid it Friday morning and paid dearly for it. Today I took the day off and no yard work took place.

We have been in triple digits since the beginning of August and expect the same until August 21st when it will go down to 99 degrees.

Today we had a low of 78 and a high of 103 degrees.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. Howdy MsB. Y’all are really working hard on making every day in August a minimum of 100°F. So far, you do not even have a 100°F or 101°F. Your “lowest high” is 102°F. Keep up the good work. I know it is hard work but you can do it.

    AUG HIGH
    DAY TEMP (°F)
    1 105
    2 103
    3 104
    4 104
    5 104
    6 102
    7 103
    8 102
    9 103

Your average high is 103.3°F for the first 9 days of August.

I drink cold green tea all day. I always drank it plain (no sugar or lemon/lime) but I have started adding electrolytes to my green tea. They are not sweet like Coke (sodas) or Gatorade (sports drinks). My H-E-B carries them so I don’t even have to go to a specialty (health food) store. They are very refreshing after working outside in these temperatures.

I tested my Harbor Freight solar light last night to see how long it will last on one charge. It stayed on continuously for 1 hour and 51 minutes. That is 111 minutes. If I use it as a flashlight, I can keep in on for one minute and use it 111 times in one night before the battery runs out. I think that is pretty good for such a bright (1160 lumens) dual (two separate lights I can point any direction) lamp with a built-in motion detector I can turn on or off. So far I only have good things to say about it.

I see the National Weather Service forecast predicts 103°F for you today so we should be able to chalk up another one for you. Stay cool and hydrated!!!!!

    1. Howdy Mr. Flyingdj...thank you for taking the time to compile all these figures. Per our local newspaper, July 2020 was the hottest month on record since they began to keep records. This does not bode well for August where we could possibly be on our way to have another record-breaking month.

I have never drunk green tea. I usually drink plain water (we have some of the best in the state) or regular unsweetened ice cold tea.

Glad your Harbor Freight solar light is working for you and that you were able to test it.

Stay cool and hydrated as well.

  2. I am so sorry to hear about your classmates passing. It really hits home when your friends pass from this horrible virus.
Our local officials are also divided. We are a nation divided now, thanks to the orange goon in the white house, along with the GOP. I never believed I would live long enough to see treason allowed to run rampant, but here we are.
Our temps have been better here. I do hope you get some relief soon.

    1. It always gave me pause when I would read of someone I went to school listed in the obituaries. Now it gives me panic to think that it could have been me dying due to this horrible virus!

Indeed we are a nation divided and it is going to take a very special person to unite us and help us heal and it isn't the current occupant of the White House.

I agree, I never thought I would see treason in the highest levels of our government and yet here we are. Rachel Maddow had a great show yesterday saying pretty much the same thing. I love how she explains things.

Are our fellow Texans still giving problems in Montana? If the temperatures are better there they may not want to come back...do not know if that is good or bad.

    2. I try to catch Rachel Maddow every chance I can. I do think she holds back a little. I suppose she has to, in her situation.
So happy with Biden's pick of Kamela Harris! This is an historic decision. I still remember Geraldine Ferraro. And I miss Ann Richards and Molly Ivan. Wonder what they would have to say about all this?
There are still a few Texans here. Everyone is giving them the stink eye and silent treatment when they are rude. This area is just gorgeous in the summer and I think a lot of them will thin out and head for home after the second blizzard and thirty below temps. Jajaja Cold weather, when you don't have the proper gear, is pretty brutal. I almost froze to death the first year.
      Stay safe, my friend

    3. I do not get the feeling Rachel holds back especially when she gets angry. Then again like you mention she has to keep her composure and remain professional.

I was glad Biden chose Kamala she is a strong woman who will give Pence hell in the Vice-Presidential debates just like she did in their respective confirmation hearings to Brett Kavanaugh and William Barr.

Up to this day every time, I see George W. Bush the first thing that comes to mind is Ann Richards saying "Poor George. He can't help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth".

It has been a long time since I heard the name Molly Ivins she like Richards had a wonderful sense of humor. I know very little about Geraldine Ferraro. However, I think they would be very happy with Biden's selection of Kamala and are probably celebrating in the beyond this evening and wishing them well.

You do not have to be in Montana to freeze to death I almost did one year in Terlingua and it wasn't even close to thirty below :D

  3. This heat really sucks already 108 here today but we did have pleasant very early morning. Be careful out there in the yard.

It should be winter soon right?!

    1. Your state is always so hot! Pleasant early mornings is something we have in common...with an emphasis on EARLY.

Winter will eventually get here but I am not sure if it will be anytime soon. In Del Rio, we have days in the '90s in December and January.

I do not know if my plans of spending summers in Uruguay will ever come to pass but a girl can dream :-(

  4. We've been in the triple digits her in Lytle, TX too. I have to remind myself that the yardwork can wait until the evening when the fireball has slowed a bit, but man, it is still 90 degrees when it is dark!

I saw on the news about your Mayor and Judge being at odds. In San Antonio, the city and county leadership are in lockstep; they just keep getting harassed by our Governor and of course national politicos. This thing is still happening people!

    1. At least you have that wonderful riding lawn mower of yours, Dave :-(

Our local programming comes from San Antonio so I always watch the Daily Coronavirus briefings on KSAT-12. I admire the camaraderie and mutual respect between Mayor Nirenberg and Judge Wolff.

Del Rio always copies what San Antonio does perhaps they could take a lesson from Bexar County leadership. Our local leaders go at each other like cats and dogs...not a pretty picture...when we need them to come together to manage this out-of-control virus.

Don't even let me get started on the Governor, Lt. Governor, and our Attorney General who are always at odds with blue counties.

  5. Ah geez. Yes it is August in Texas. Every year for the past 40 years I have wondered why in the hell do I live here?? Who knows. Just be careful with yourself. And stay inside, not only to stay away from the virus but also from the heat. I remember September a long time ago, probably early 80's where September had 2 weeks of over 100. I thought at the time, OK, this should be it, MOVE. I was trying to pack up the van for a camping vacation in the Rockies. About the time we left, things got a lot better. Enjoying your avocados?

    1. JudithK, you and I have been asking ourselves that same question for about as long. Today I gave myself the day off again. Glad I bagged those leaves and clippings last week as tomorrow is trash day...the rest will have to wait until September, October...next year?

I enjoyed my last avocado with my salad this evening :)

    2. Ohhh. Envy, but I am so glad you had an enjoyable avocado. And that you gave yourself the day off yesterday. Yes, all those big outside chores will still be there come ....October. Stay cool.

  6. I was without electricity for 5.5 hours last night and this morning. I don't know the cause of the outage. You are not the only lucky one to save on your electrical bill by not even having the chance to use it. I use a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) for my computer, Internet, and phone. It lasted 4 hours before it ran out. I have a cheap phone from Walmart (sort of like the old "princess" phones) that I can use once the UPS loses all power but I was too lazy to plug it in so I didn't have phone service either. Back to normal right now and I even have ice already because I did not open the refrigerator or freezer door so it stayed cold. I hope you have a good day!

    1. I heard that there had been rolling power outages all over our state as well as neighboring ones. My friends in California have been experiencing them this past couple of days.

I think you misunderstood it was JO that had problems with her new A/C or maybe it was Gyspy? CRS...you know :-(

There is no way we could do without our central air we would have to go rent a hotel room as it would be dangerous for my mother's health.

At least in your case, it happened during the night and early morning hours when it is still tolerable. Have a good day as well!
