Sore back / Lab Report / Hatch Chiles / Karma

I do not know where this week has gone to but time sure flies by COVID-19 or not.  I have not done any yard work since I managed to hurt my back and now instead of being able to carry 1 gallon on each hand, I can only carry 1/2 gallon in each.  I have to carry them to the southern section of the property to water a shade tree and several pomegranate ones.

You might ask why not just use a water hose?  I would have to string together three 100 ft hoses and that gets tricky as there are many desert cacti that they can get stuck on and more holes poked on them even though they are heavy-duty ones.

Yesterday I finally went to pick up the mail at the P.O. Box.  If this intentional slow down of our nation's mail by this administration has had one benefit is that I am not receiving as many letters from flippers wish I could say the same for their darn telephone calls.

I am not too happy with my new doctor's male nurse.  I got my lab reports not once but twice...I suppose it is better than not getting them at all. The one medication I tried so hard to get off of by eating oatmeal, salads, fruit, cereal, 1% low-fat milk, diet ice cream, and no red meat did not work out...my cholesterol levels are still high so it looks like I will be going back on statins.

Made a quick stop at the main HEB to pick-up more of the above items and to check their vitamin aisle. No Zinc but did find Biotin in regular form but since I had already bought the Gummies at Walmart the other day I did not purchase any.

The first time I heard about Hatch Chiles was at the Terlingua Chili Cook-off more than twenty years ago.  In the last seven years or so HEB has incorporated them into many of their products during their harvest time.

I saw a Hatch Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken and decided to buy it.  I thought it would at least be spicy as Hatch chiles are but I could have fed it to a child and they would not have found it hot at all.  I was disappointed but at least it had no salt and was juicy and tender.

This was the going gasoline price yesterday. $1.819 for a gallon of unleaded gasoline.

It has been hot but Terlingua was hotter today.

Sometimes Karma does make an appearance...

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. Sorry to hear your doing everything right and still have higher cholesterol. I used to follow all that stuff and have the same problem. Then a new Dr. said that was wrong and to eat red meat, 1% milk is nothing but sugar so maybe 2% or whole milk is better. My cholesterol is down BUT we are all different. I also started losing weight when I started following Keto, but must admit I'm not very good at it but I have lost weight. Hope you can find a happy spot in what you need to eat.

    1. I have been dealing with cholesterol for a long time the few times I was able to keep it under control has been with Statins. As much as I do not want to take them I have no choice.

  2. I had high cholesterol for several years and tried to lower it with diet rather than meds. I eventually gave up and the past couple of years the cholesterol has been lower than normal. I rarely eat meat these days, but I don't think that has much to do wiith it.

    1. All my previous and now current doctors have told me to cut down on eating red meat among many other things not just to keep my cholesterol under control but I have other health issues. The last thing I need is to become a diabetic as well.

  3. Sometimes no matter how hard we try we are stuck taking Medications. One way to fight Cholesterol and Body Pain is through Exercise which can be something as simple as walking. Unfortunately with the high temperatures you are getting that could be a challenge.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

    1. As much as I have tried to control my ailments with diet and some form of exercise there are times when medications have to be added to the equation.

    1. Jeelbare...how the heck are you doing? Long time no hearing from you!

Thought about you the other day when our local newspaper allowed me to read an article without having to pay for it (their online version).

Did Lorina sell her bar? For some reason, I thought that was her name but in that article, a woman named Kellee Pratt said the owner was her sister Desiree Chapman.

Glad you dropped by...don't be a stranger!

    2. Yes Desiree is Lorinas sister and is running the cantina.... not sure how they are fairing during the shut down
I understand amistad is now open on weekends as they were only open weekdays the past month or months

    3. The article where they mentioned her Cantina in the Del Rio News-Herald was titled "Lake Area business owners voice their frustrations over pandemic-driven closures".

I copied the article which is quite long but I failed to copy the link as after a couple of days they will only allow you to read the first paragraph and if you want to read more you have to pay.

That meeting with the Val Verde County Judge lead to the weekend re-opening of the ANRA (Amistad National Recreational Area) though I believe it will take place this weekend not sure. The online edition will not let me read that article.

  7. After years of research (I am now almost 75) I have concluded that cholesterol numbers in a blood test all have to do with genetic makeup. I have friends who eat only lettuce and paper towels, and have high cholesterol. I eat all of the forbidden foods with great zest, often, and do not have high cholesterol. With reluctance, they take the meds and I am glad they do. Most do not have serious problems with taking them. As for me, I will die of something. So go ahead. If they are not impairing your quality of life significantly. Hey, I've made another speech!

  8. I am sorry to hear you stayed on a strict diet and it still did not help. I hope the stations will help. I don't know anything about them and wonder if there are side effects?
Also sorry to hear about your back. Water is heavy! Perhaps you will get some rain from Marco or Laura. I am watching the storms closely.
I think these two storms will break all the rules. Also will take news away from the RNC. JAJA
I read where the guy who invented auto correct passed away. May he restaurant in peace.
    Take care my friend

    1. Needless to say, I am disappointed that my sacrifice was in vain. Statins have terrible side effects on some individuals. I am concerned about liver damage, muscle aches, and tenderness. I already have fibromyalgia, and it has led me to question that diagnosis.

Other side effects include headache, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, feeling unusually tired, or physically weak. It is no wonder I want NOTHING to do with STATINS.

As JudithK said, I will eventually die of something but I have decided I am NOT going to take this medication.

Marco will not affect us, but I am concerned about Laura hitting the Greater Houston area.

      Take care, Ms. Penny!

    2. Sorry meant to say I suffer from FIBROMYOSITIS, not Fibromyalgia, or at least have those symptoms that I developed while taking Statins. That is the reason why I now question that diagnosis.

    3. That is a long list of side effects. I had no idea. I would think twice before taking a drug like that...seems the 'cure' is worse than the treatment.
I am surprised you didn't chuckle over the joke about the man who invented autocorrect. I thought it was hilarious.
      Good article about Armistead.

    4. My old nurse friend had muscle, etc problems with the statins and just halved her dose when she finally went back on them after quitting like you have. No dr told her to do this of course, but it did help her cholesterol numbers a bit, and did not affect her body with the other things of concern. As an OLD RN, she is used to resisting doctors, often with some success. And in this instance, it paid off. You might give it a try. I think she tried several before resorting to this, and after quitting all of them. I can't believe I'm giving medical advice over the internet. I am NOT a medical person. Just hoping you can stay well.

    5. Penelope, I am sorry I have not checked my "awaiting moderation" file until this afternoon. For some reason, unbeknownst to me Blogger no longer feels the need to inform me when someone has commented on a post after three days.

I agree it was a funny joke but I was all into my statin side effects that I forgot to comment on it. However, I loved "Armistead"...jajajaja!

    6. JudithK - I have an old RN friend as well but the problem is that he likes to drink a lot and is a meat and potatoes man. His cholesterol was higher than mine but then again...he is a BIG man.

The doctors he works with (he is an RN in the emergency room) told him the same thing to half his dosage and if he was going to party hardy like we all do when we go to Terlingua to not take his medication at all.

My problem is that I do not know if all my side effects are caused by statins or if they are the symptoms of something else.

I will need to talk to my new doctor about it hopefully when I can see him face to face and NOT via telephone conference.

  9. Here is a condensed version of the article...

Lake Amistad area business owners met Thursday to express anger and frustration over the continued weekend closure of the Amistad National Recreation Area.

The meeting, which drew about 50 business owners, fishermen and fisherwomen, their families and members of the media, met in a large metal building on the grounds of the Devil’s River Beer Barn on Highway 90. Kevin Q. Kyzer, Devil’s River Beer Barn general manager, hosted the meeting.

“We’re trying to get the lake opened back up. Get the lake, get the golf course opened back up, get people outside. I think it’d help out a lot,” Kyzer said as he welcomed the group.

The meeting paused briefly until Val Verde County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. arrived.

“We want to put our heads together and figure out some way to get this lake opened back up, because (the closure) is killing the economy in Del Rio and Val Verde County,” Kyzer said.

“This being open five days a week isn’t cutting it. We lose 50 to 60 percent of our weekly revenue due to the fact that people can’t come to the lake on the weekends, and I’m sure there’s people losing more than that,” he added.

Several other business owners and managers echoed Kyzer’s concerns. One woman, Kellee Pratt, asked why large parties and other events are still being allowed at several large private event venues off Highway 90.

“There’s a venue down the street from here that’s packed every weekend, and I know they’ve had COVID positives coming from weddings and quinceañeras. They have pictures on their web site of people standing close together, hugging each other, no masks, but we can’t get on our boat with our kids, people in our same household, on the weekends,” Pratt said.

Pratt said her sister, Desiree Chapman, owns Lorina’s Cantina, a popular lake area tavern and eatery, and a set of adjacent cabins, Casitas De La Cantina.

“My sister’s bar has been closed for six months, and her only income has been the cabins, and now that they’ve shut down the lake, she has no cabins being rented. How is she supposed to pay her taxes? Del Rio and Val Verde County are going to lose a lot of money because a lot of these people are just going to go out of business,” Pratt said.
“It’s crippling the whole economy, the whole economy of Val Verde County. It’s affecting everybody, so we’ve got to figure out something,” Kyzer agreed.

Several other persons attending the meeting wondered aloud why Amistad National Recreation Area park rangers were not more visible in areas of the park where the public was more likely to gather.

Owens, when he arrived at the meeting, was peppered with a barrage of questions and confirmed it was his belief that “parties” and similar large gatherings are the true culprits in the local spread of COVID-19.

“What I’ve seen out there (at the lake) hasn’t been a problem but I wasn’t out there on the July 4 weekend, so I don’t know, and that’s what everybody keeps coming back to: ‘On July 4th it was terrible,’ but I wasn’t out there,” Owens said.

Owens did add that he believed Chris Ryan, the Amistad National Recreation Area superintendent, who did not attend the meeting, “is doing the best he can do.”

“But if you ask my opinion, I think we open the boat docks back up, at a bare minimum, and put some signs up,” Owens said.

The county judge agreed issuing citations to a few of the most egregious offenders would let the public know that park administrators are serious about enforcing social distancing measures.

“The word’s going to get out,” Owens said.

“We need these ramps opened up. In four weeks, I’m off 77 percent on counter sales. That accumulates to $20,000. I have lost $20,000 in sales in four weeks. I can’t survive down there ... I need some help, and everybody in this room needs help,” said Bink Giles, owner of Two Guys Marine.

The business owners asked Owens if he could send a letter supporting the reopening of the national park on weekends, and Owens said he would propose the measure to county commissioners court during a special meeting on Monday.
