More Coronavirus Cases / Breezy and Hot

The city of Del Rio and Val Verde County recorded the 15th and 16th cases of the novel coronavirus over the Memorial Day weekend, and the 17th case was announced yesterday Tuesday, May 26th.

The 15th case is attributed to domestic travel while the 16th and 17th are considered to be community spread related. Both patients remained under quarantine, according to the announcement.  Out of the previous cases, the 14th patient remains under quarantine while the other 13 have recovered.

Both the city and county recorded the first coronavirus case on March 24, 2020.  All factors considered I suppose my little neck of the woods is not doing so bad but the fact that two of the newer cases are community spread has me very worried as they could have picked it up anywhere.

Sad that this day also marks 100,000 deaths and counting from this terrible virus in the United States. Even worst that this administration twits about everything under the sun but as of this writing has failed to acknowledge this terrible milestone in our nation. Where is the empathy?

Since I do not subscribe to the local newspaper nor am I on social media I was not sure if we were still under mandatory stay at home orders. The article I was able to read free of charge said: "City officials reiterated it is imperative for the community to remain home if they are able to do so, and practice social distancing and all guidelines provided by the Centers of Disease and Control Prevention, and the Texas Department of Health Services."  That statement leads me to believe we are not though I am staying home unless I absolutely need to go out.

It was a sunny, breezy, and hot day.  We had a low of 72 and a high of 101 degrees.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. I want to go to Dollar Tree but I'm not comfortable going into stores after the way I reacted to Walmart last week to get my new phone. Of course Dollar Tree would be far less crowded for sure. I have no trust in our government on this virus. So like you I will follow my own rules

    1. With my CRS I don't remember how you reacted will have to go back and re-read your post. I still can not walk into a Walmart after the El Paso mass shooting last year. I have gone in out of necessity to pick-up an online order but prefer to stay the hell away from that store.

No one is going to look after us at least not this administration they seemed to have moved on from this crisis so we have to follow our own rules to protect ourselves.

  2. Following your gut feeling will keep you safer then listening to the politicians.
    Be Safe and Enjoy!

    It's about time.

  3. You're probably not under any mandatory stay at home order....especially since the state is opening up. And local governments are not over-riding the governor.(Insert political comment here.) I myself am laying low for a few more weeks, to see what the effects of the opening will be. I've been keeping track of my county's stats for 3 months..going so far as to write them down. So we'll see if there's any big change in the works. I hope not.

    1. I do not know why but Del Rio tries to mimic everything San Antonio does and they still have stay-at-home orders so I am just assuming we do too?

Like I mentioned it does not really matter as I, like yourself, am also laying low to see what the effects of the early opening of the state are.

What gets under my skin is that I find more information about the people who are Covid-19 positive from the Ciudad Acuña newspaper El Zócalo than from the Del Rio News-Herald.

El Zócalo identified one of the victims as a lady caregiver (takes care of the elderly at their home). Two people in her household took the test and also tested positive.

The other was employed by the school district and a person in her household tested positive as well. While I feel bad for these families the new cases were contained two households and that makes a world of difference. Why can't the local paper say that and ease the citizenry's worries?

  4. Since the coronavirus is by no means over with, I'm taking all the precautions I can and staying home for the most part. The politicians urging us to get back out are more interested in us spending our money than in protecting our lives. We have to take care of ourselves, which is really the way it has always been.

    1. You are right politicians do not care about our health all they want is for us to go spend the stimulus checks they sent out to re-ignite the economy.

News reports show Americans are saving more than before. I myself are not spending a penny more than I need to.

  5. Yesterday, I did look at your city and county sites for infoand couldn't come up with much. Our county health department has been very good about listing contact info (not names, but how it came about) and I didn't see any of that sort of thing from your neck of the woods. I dunno. But if Del Rio is going to copy somebody, they could do worse than SA in their recommendations. SA is really doing well enough in terms of managing this. But your health department is not doing well at all in getting information out. I am very pleased with ours. I have to dig for it, but it's there. Of course I don't listen to the radio or watch tv...so maybe I wouldn't have to ferret all this out for myself. (I really hate sitting through commercials.) As far as I can tell, it's only TIME X DISTANCE that operates in this virus.
So the longer the time, and the closer you are to an infected person...the worse your chances. But Minutes and Feet are the deal. OK. I'll quit.

    1. I thought it was just me but I could not find anything regarding our Covid-19 cases or maybe I just do not know where to look for it in the USA. That is why I rely on the Mexican newspaper El Zócalo and since I am "frugal" I like that they do not charge to read it, unlike our local newspaper.

I agree that San Antonio is a good city to look up to for leadership but sometimes I wish the politicians could come up with ideas of their own. We literally copy EVERYTHING including their camping at the park during the Easter weekend.

I do not listen to the radio either frankly I would not have a clue what radio stations currently operate in Del Rio. The few times that I drive into the city and have the radio turned on...it is again a radio station from Mexico that I listen to because they play the type of music I like to hear.

Del Rio has no local television stations so unless you like to look at a blank TV...you have no choice but to subscribe to cable and the news you see is from San Antonio.

  6. We haven't had as many cases here as you have but I am still carefully considering any shopping trips. Now that tourist season is officially open I will be a lot more careful. I still think the worst is yet to happen. I read an article today that said there will be another 100,000 cases by Labor Day.
I planted my tomatoes, peppers and corn yesterday and was actually surprised at how enjoyable it was. I got a bit of sunburn, however. Redheads and sunshine don't mix well. Hopefully I will get some good tomatoes to share with my friend Lilly. Maybe a pepper or two.
    We were at 80* today.

    1. You are lucky to live in such a big and yet less populated state...our last American frontier!

Unfortunately, I see the next 100,000 cases by Labor Day something very possible in particular with the recent protests and lack of social distancing.

Congratulations on your new garden...what type of peppers did you plant?

Glad to hear warm temperatures have finally reached your little corner of the world.
