Extreme drought / In store pick-up / Avocados

We are still suffering from high temperatures even without taking into account the heat indexes.  The trees continue to lose their leaves not because it is Fall but because we have had no rain.  Every Thursday the drought map for Texas comes out, last week we were in a severe drought, this week the southern tip of Val Verde County where we reside is in extreme drought.

This week I had raked the leaves in the front yard but due to the high winds, it looks like I am going to have to do it all over again!  Today we had a high of 96 a low of 74 with a heat index of 98 degrees.

Drove into town this afternoon to run errands.  I had ordered something online from Walmart with the option of store pick-up so I had no choice but to finally enter the store I have been avoiding since the El Paso mass shooting.

I had no idea they had a new pick up center I think it is called a Tower?  It is automated however their WiFi was down and since I do not want to have to come again I went shopping until it came back up.

JudithK, if you are reading this you were correct.  Before I had only bought avocados at HEB but the ones at Walmart were equally non-ripe but I bought them anyway.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. Hopefully you will get some rain soon and the weather cools a bit more, good luck with your avocados .

  2. I buy avocados for my daughtwe (I like guacamole a little,, but really don't like eating or doing anything with avocados themselves. They are so expensive or aren't even carried at my grocery the past couple of weeks. I think we are going to have serious trouble with food in the next few years, and most farmers in the midwest are already suffering from weather and events. We, the common people, are in for a rough ride!

    1. Avocado prices have gone down some from earlier in the year. I paid .88 cents a piece.

It is said those grown in California have been affected by a four-year drought. Water was more expensive and in some areas water usage was restricted.

Tried to find out why the Mexican avocados are also high but I am using an ad blocker and it wont let me read certain sites unless I deactivate it.

No doubt with climate change we are in for a rough ride in particular our younger generations.

    2. I'd be buying a lot more avocados if I lived in your neighborhood. I have paid $2 and sometimes $2.50 EACH for a Hass avocado.

    3. They were that high here at HEB but it was their large ones. The ones I bought at Walmart were the regular size ones and I believe they were Mexican avocados not California avocados.

  3. Over 3000 record breaking weather events recorded this year, so far. Two suns in the sky and the moon is weird. We are in the process of a poleshift. It will get much worse, and quick. Drought is just awful. We have had rain and snow this year but the prior two drought years had us surrounded by wildfires of epic proportions.
Do you ripen your avocados by putting them in a brown paper bag like I do? I love avocados but they are higher than a cat's back here and of poor quality. All produce here is expensive. We are in such a remote area. I did manage to find honeycrisp apples for a buck fifty per pound today. I will make apple crisp with oatmeal streusel tonight.
I hope your weather cools soon and that you are well and have plenty of ice cold beer to give you some comfort.
This country has gone to hell in a handbasket. The American people are good, for the most part, but our elected officials do not reflect that. I despair it can be fixed.

    1. Yes, lots of records are being broken everywhere not exactly a good thing.

I have heard of putting them in a brown paper bag though I have never actually tried it myself. I just let them ripe on their own and then put them in the fridge to use in my salads.

You live way up there so I can see how produce and groceries would cost more because of transportation costs.

After yesterday's events when the bar for a president went even lower I decided to take a day off from news and instead watched the José José coverage of the first funeral (by invitation only) held in Miami.

The country of Mexico is in an uproar as his wife and his youngest daughter have decided to forego taking him to that country for the tributes that had been planned. They are afraid that once his body was there his other children would not allow his body be returned to the USA.

He had always said he wanted to be buried next to his mother in Mexico. Good old family drama.

  4. That is just horrible for them to use that poor man in this manner and to deny the people in Mexico the chance to pay their respects and show their love. But family drama is pretty common when anyone dies. I have never understood that. His wishes were to be buried beside his Mother. Just so greedy and disrespectful. Thanks for keeping me updated.
Do try the paper bag. Works faster and more evenly.

    1. It has been a circus since the two older children landed in Miami, Florida and had to go from funeral home to funeral home looking for his corpse, the hospital where he died and then the police station to report its loss.

Sarita (younger daughter) would not answer her telephone or inform them in which funeral home he was at. I said funeral on my last comment but it was a "wake". Each child was allowed to invite people close to José José's inner circle or theirs. Marisol (oldest daughter) invited the Mexican Consul in Miami in appreciation for helping them reach a truce. He was un-invited by Sarita and told not to show up and be embarrassed as he would not be allowed in. This is like a Mexican Telenovela.

Will have to look into the brown bag trick. Have a good weekend.

  5. Oh dear. You can't get them either. Well. I do have a friend who lives in Guanajuato state, so keep up on the news from interior Mexico. The cartels are trying to take over the avocado business, so that doesn't bode well for the future. Since everything has gotten so much warmer, do you think you could actually grow an avocado tree??? Of course, the water necessary is another matter. We're in minor drought here in the smack middle of Texas, and the leaves are falling here as well. Only bright spot on the horizon is a chance for cooler temperatures and MAYBE a little rain this coming week. Ah, well, here's hoping for better weather for all of us.....
Again, thanks for your work, I am always interested in life on the border!

    1. The cartels extorted many avocado farmers or outright took over some avocado plantations a couple of years back. Avocado is one of Mexico's prime exports so for once the federal government got involved under the last worthless president Peña Nieto.

I saw a report a while back where avocado plantation owners had to hire armed guards to protect their lands but had no idea it was still going on.

We have had an avocado tree for about five or six years but not on the ground on a planter but have not had any success with it.

I am looking forward to Monday when we will have a "cool front" it should only be in the high 70's with a 40% chance of rain.

    1. Thank you JO. It appears we will have a cool front with a good possibility of rain next Monday. By "cool" I mean high 70's.

The saying of the day made me chuckle when I read it so had to share it. It is one positive about being over 30 :D
