Early morning appointment / missing property tax statements

I tossed and turned all night much like I do when I have an early appointment and I'm afraid I might oversleep. Decided to start my day at 5:00 a.m. even though it was still dark outside. When they called to remind me of my appointment they told me to show up ten minutes before my appointment but when I inquired about registering times...she had forgotten that small detail and told me to arrive 30 minutes early. What a misinformed person, from years of experience I know it can take more than an hour. Pre-COVID I would have pre-registered but I was not going to do that and put myself in danger two days in a row.

Glad I showed up an hour and a half early because you have to have your temperature taken before you are allowed into the hospital (which is a good thing) answer some questions and then they match you to a list of appointments for the day after which they place a blue wrist band then you are allowed to proceed to the registration office. I understand the color changes daily and it serves to notify hospital employees that you have been screened.

There were so many people there! Glad I did not listen to that silly girl. It took almost an hour before I finished that part of the process and headed to Radiology. There were more people there but I did not have to wait long as my name was called out after only 10 minutes.

After I left the hospital I proceeded to the Recycling Center to drop off my metal cans and plastic water bottle containers.

I was so busy with the elections and donating to my favorite candidates during October that I completely forgot about paying our property taxes as you get a small discount if you pay them before January 31, 2021.

Then it hit me that I never saw them...they are hard to miss as they are hot pink. Placed a call to the appropriate county office and was told they were mailed out in mid-October, she agreed to re-send them.

Today I swung by the post office and while they had not arrived yet...I got two property tax statements that did not belong to us...not even the P.O. Box number matched. I wonder if ours are in somebody else's box as well? If it wasn't for the fact that we have had our box for YEARS...I would get a new one at the Post Office located in the north part of town.

By now it was past lunchtime so I picked up some smoked turkey legs. They were quite good. This afternoon I fell asleep during the five o'clock news, I really needed that nap!

Today we had a high of 87 degrees.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

Aunty Acid Saying of the Day

  1. You should notify the Tax department about getting Other peoples statements rather then your own.
Hoping the States Certify their Votes soon so he has to leave.
Be Safe and Enjoy the cooler temperatures.

    It's about time.

    1. The Tax Department did what they had to do...the problem lies with Post Office #1 whom I am told hired several new employees back in the last quarter of 2019. One would think after a year they would have learned by now.

I thought my stress levels would subside after the elections but they only got worse. Hillary Clinton lost in 2016 by the same number of electoral votes as Trump in these elections and she conceded the election the following morning.

I am not certain this individual will do the same even when the few remaining states certify their votes.

  2. I am glad you were able to get your medical needs taken care of as safely as possible.
I have had my post office box for 16 years and still get other people's mail. I have sent some cards and packages to Louisiana that never arrived. Now I don't send anything important without getting tracking and insurance. We are still getting political trash. I think I have received about 125 flyers/junk mail. They removed the trash cans from inside the post office about two months ago because they could not keep them emptied.
That 87 degrees sounds good. We got all the way up to 33* here today. I had one errand to run and the streets are a mess with all the ice. I was glad to get back and enjoy a three hour nap.
Those smoked turkey legs just sound fabulous. It has been years since I have had one.
Love love the Aunty Acid. Amen to that, sister! Lol
There was a big meeting last night about the virus and the need to mask, distance, etc. My neighbor called to let me know. Huh?? I have been preaching caution for months. Now the hospital is overwhelmed with cases. No enforcement of the mask mandate, idiots with no masks. Suddenly it's a problem?
Thanksgiving will kill off a bunch and Christmas will get the rest.
Stay safe and well my friend.

    1. I have to say that I am very surprised that we got very little political advertising considering how much was spent in Texas elections this year. I personally think this post office did not deliver most of them to P.O. Box holders or at least not to us.

Do you have to put snow chains on your tires? Not sure if that is the correct term. I don't think we will see 33 degrees until January and only as a morning low.

I had not been to the Bar-b-q Pit in a long time as their prices went up considerably when the meat shortage began. They are still high but we deserve it and it sure hit the spot.

I do not care if it kills all those people who are "anti-maskers" but the sad fact is that the ones it will kill are their parents, grandparents, and other vulnerable individuals in their household.

Glad you enjoyed today's Aunty Acid.

You stay safe, well, but most importantly warm!

    2. If I planned on doing any mountain pass (steep grades) I would use chains. They are generally used in icy conditions. I had a Ranger for a while and used studded winter tires. I really only drive here in town now so I don't have either one. The trick is to know when or if the streets have been plowed or sanded and when to not go anywhere if conditions are bad.
I was so ignorant (stupid) when I first came up here. Didn't know a pass from my ads but I learned quick when I drove through a blizzard on the north pass into Jackson Hole, Wy with no brakes and no second gear halfway there. I had on flats, skirt and a jean jacket. When you could see anything at all you could see where one wrong action would send you off a cliff. I have no idea how I made it but I guess God looks after fools and idiots. You can bet I took a different route to get back. That is when I learned to pack my truck with winter gear and ask about road conditions locally. The most important thing is good wiper blades and a shovel. Now I have a big Dodge and enough sense to stay home.

    3. Experience is definitively the best teacher!

See, that is why I tell you to start your own blog. You have a lot of interesting stories to share and your knowledge can be of benefit to many.

I do not think I have seen a blog about a single girl living in Montana and narrating her experiences about dealing with the elements and small-town life in "Big Sky Country".

  3. So much to do these day to see a Dr. the dentist wasn't much better. Monday or Tue. I have to go for my labs and then the following week the Dr. Covid is speeding up around here so I hope they call and do an phone apt. Glad I finished almost all my Christmas shopping and some may get passed over if things get any worse.

That Post Office sounds as bad as the one in my area. Can't get crap right. I also had to call the county to ask about tax statement this fall. She said just go on line and pay it that way because they were running late. I tried the online payment and they wanted $9. not from me get your selves in gear and mail them out. It showed up 3 days later and I paid it right away.

    1. It was stressful before...now with Covid, it is a nightmare to seek medical attention. I need to go see the dentist but mine is in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila and their Covid numbers are worse than ours so it is going to have to wait. I hope you can get a telephone appointment so you don't have to expose yourself to this darn virus.

Congratulations on getting your Christmas shopping done already. My friend was just telling me how sad she was that she had not been able to go to the stores to start hers.

For some reason, Val Verde County does not have an online payment option. I am only able to pay my Harris County Taxes that way.

    2. Finally, received the copies of the property tax statements but wouldn't you know it, they failed to mail one of them. I called them since it had been a couple of years since I had inquired about paying online.

They do have that option now but use a third party, and they charge 2.85% of your tax bill. I DON'T think so!!!

  4. Maybe your Acuna dentist is operating safely. Can you call them up and see what kind of system they have going? Here, the numbers are going up and up and up. But I have been to my dr's office and they had a good system.

    1. My dentist is very good about safety (hygiene wise, cleanliness, and location) in his practice. He has a private parking lot, and you only have to walk a few feet to enter his office. The doors automatically lock, and they ask you to only bring one person with you, and this was Pre-Covid.

However, I am not in pain or dire need to see him. Right now, I do not feel safe going to Mexico for any reason, heck I do not even feel safe going to our local Walmart.
