Local water compromised / Newspaper dead zone

Yesterday we had a sunny warm day but the Del Rio weather station is still not able to disseminate its information in the aftermath of the storm of last week. That is why there is a difference of information KSAT-12 said it was 88 degrees yesterday while KENS-5 had a reading for Del Rio of 82 degrees. Either way, it was a lovely warm day.

We were warned the weather would change starting last night and they were right. It began raining in the early morning hours and the sun never came out. We had a high of 68 degrees but it felt cooler with the wind. Had to transfer my water catchment around to other containers as more rain is expected in the following days and we certainly need it.

I had high hopes the snow and freezing temperatures would have killed the weeds but I was wrong they appear to have grown more and now we have tons of ant mounds all over the property. These are the pissy ant mounds we get every year in spring but this time they are ahead of schedule.

It is so frustrating not to have any information of what is going on in Del Rio without a city newspaper and it seems that El Zócalo the Ciudad Acuña newspaper has revamped its webpage and they no longer have a Texas section. While they do have one or two articles about Del Rio they are old. For example, today's online edition focused on empty shelves at Walmart and HEB on Monday.

I am concerned about an item I saw on CNN it was a virtual interview with the Del Rio mayor Bruno Lozano where he stated that San Felipe Creek that is fed by San Felipe Springs had been contaminated when sewer water accidentally was released. This is the water source for Del Rio.

I saw a clip of a military plane landing at Laughlin Air Force Base with tons of pallets of drinking water that were meant for law enforcement, the hospital, and nursing homes but not the local residents.  While we do not need any water I am sure there are other people who still have busted pipes that could use some.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  2. Yesterday, Del Rio made the NY Times again.

Glad you made it through okay.

    1. Thank you for that link Hachita. Like one of the people quoted in the article I too am surprised the New York Times would devote two articles to Del Rio in such a short period of one another.

After reading the number of people left without electricity and water I feel even more fortunate to have had both during this arctic blast. This area is usually left in the dark ( south Val Verde County) during our multiple power outages throughout the year regardless of what the weather situation might be.

I can only hope this media exposure brings more state and federal aid to our long-suffering and neglected town.

  3. TX. is in a mess and turd cruz is running around lobbying for the orange turd and making jokes about his fun time in warm Cancun. If anyone votes for these fools the next time they are up for re election they should all be ashamed to call themselves Americans.

    1. Yes, unfortunately, I watched that clip of Turd Cruz and it was nauseating. He was in his element with fellow idiots at the Conservative Political Action Conference 2021.

Turd is not up for re-election until 2024 and voters in particular Republicans have a short memory in a Ruby Red state.

  4. It is horrible that the residents have had their water supply compromised. I have noticed several reports of towns in Texas under boil water advisories. Makes you wonder what is really going on?
I don't think they want the general public to be informed. Why is your mayor not on the radio? Is he putting out information on facebook? Lots of people do not have internet.
I listened to your govenor give a speech a couple of days ago. It was clearly written and coached by his pr people. It was complete pablum for the stupid.
So the grid in Texas is in serious trouble. I know you are enjoying some warmer weather but what if the grid is down in the summer?
Those ants are just scary to me. Get some peppermint essential oil, mix a little with water and spray on your shoes and socks and pants when going out. Bugs don't like it.
I am unsure about what is actually happening in your area, but I know a rat when I smell one. Good you are adding more water preps, as well as covering other bases. I know you are afraid of propane but you can get a little fold up Coleman stove that holds a can of Sterno and you have a way to heat some food in an emergency.
    Stay safe my friend

    1. The NY Times link Hachita shared shed light on a lot of questions I had. It clarifies that as of yesterday (Thursday) the city is not under a boil water advisory.

Even if the mayor was on the radio the only radio I have is in my car and I do not know what radio station he would be on...heck, I do not even know how many radio stations Del Rio has.

I do not have a social media account so I do not know if that is how the City of Del Rio and Val Verde County are communicating with their citizenry.

Our area is constantly being hit with power spikes and power outages and we have lost power in the past for 24-hours during the summer but there is little we can do and apparently neither can our elected officials.

I have tried to find peppermint essential oil in the past to drive away spiders but never found some, did not know it worked on ants too.

Our stove is propane...I need to call them to fill up our tank...just hope the price has not skyrocketed!

Stay warm and safe in your beautiful but cold corner of the world amiga.
