Not what we expected but we will take it...

The weather forecasters have been promising rain since Monday but it eluded us until this afternoon. However, it was more drama than precipitation. A strong wind gust came first, kicking up so much dirt I could barely see in front of me as I ran to bring in all the cats' bowls while they were still eating. This was followed by loud thunder and then a three-minute shower.

This is all I got in my primitive rain catchment.  Since it had not rained in a long time I got more dirt from the roof than water.

This is the larger of two metal tubs
I used to have for the stray dogs

Because I knew the quality of the rain I would capture would not be pristine I did not open the lids of the water containers that from lack of rain I had filled with City of Del Rio water. Del Rio gets its water from San Felipe Springs which then feeds San Felipe Creek and that I have featured many times on this blog.

This weekend I spent raking all those pesky mesquites pods managing to fill the trash can that thankfully went into the city dump today. Even so, I still have a ton more for next week and was afraid that the rain would make them sprout. My arms still hurt 😢

You can see my little piles of
those nasty pods 😠

You can see from the above picture how little rain actually fell and how many more piles of pods I have to deal with.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. The weather guessers are having a hard time giving accurate forecasts these days.
Though it is necessary don't over do it at cleaning the pods.

    It's about time.

    1. It is indeed hard for them to predict weather these days. I had tons of pods and could not take a chance on them getting wet and sprouting apart from also running out of "cat food bags" that are the only ones that the pods do not puncture.

It is a shame that I have not been able to find a reliable yardman just lazy, incompetent, drunks, or shady scary men with poor work ethics...leaving me no choice but to do it myself.

  2. I'm trying to think of something that would eat those pods for you. A goat? Ha. (Probably more trouble than raking the pods.) We got little rain out of this also.....it was cooler, though, so nice. But it rained well, just to north of us and south of us.

    1. You are right goats would be more trouble than the pods and would probably eat the Esperanzas and Bougainvilleas and a certain person who I am not allowed to mention on this blog would be very upset with me!

I'm glad you got some rain maybe not as much as you would have liked but rain nonetheless.

    2. Are mesquite pods bad for goats? Never mind. There's obviously an issue here I am not aware of...unless they make goats sick. Which I am sure can happen, as they will eat almost anything when hungry. Survivors!!

    3. Per Google---> Ingestion of young leaves, pods, or beans can cause toxicosis in cattle and goats if they comprise a substantial portion of their diet.

The main issue is that I do not know who would rent and deliver goats as I would not want them here full time. I can barely keep up with the cats.

I have had terrible luck with yardmen, just counting the ones I have contracted, I have failed four times. I can not tell you the ones the owner of this house and who does not want to be mentioned on this blog has hired, and again it was a bust. So I will have to do it myself, even if it kills my back.

  3. I was about to say at least you had rain with all the noise and wind, then it started to rain here but sounds like it won't last very long, more of a drizzle.

    1. Sometimes a drizzle is better as it has time to soak in. I am surprised you have not had more rain since this is usually your monsoon season. I guess everyone's weather is all screwed up.
