2019 Easter Camping along the banks of San Felipe Springs - Part II

After leaving San Felipe Lions Park I went down the road to another park.  This park did not exist when I was growing up in Del Rio.  The first thing I noticed was the two RV's. I know I am going to get in trouble for saying this but I do not consider bringing your RV as camping.

There is something about camping out in a tent and like Rick and Kathy of "It's About Time" http://ricknkathyrousseau.blogspot.com  fame mentioned on my prior post "memories of sleeping on the ground with rocks poking you in the back".

I think everyone, in particular, the kids will be making wonderful memories camping and sleeping in tents during Easter.  Thus when they become adults they will learn the value of "roughing it" and better appreciate the comforts an RV affords.

The lady in red sure walked fast she passed me up leaving her sister and kids behind. She was still wearing her pajamas because it was chilly and/or had just gotten up.  This park has more parking than the other area parks. It also has the longest walk to bring your stuff in when you are setting up camp.

I stopped at the bridge to take pictures but since the sun was not high up enough and I do not take good pictures using my cell phone they are not good quality shots.

After you cross the bridge there is a very large area with huge trees suited for tent camping. There was plenty of room for those that had not yet arrived.

I hope you had an enjoyable Easter weekend with family and friends or whomever you chose to spend it with.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. My RV is my home, it's tough to get up off the ground these days :-)

If I was going to pull out the tent I'd use an air mattress! Still hard to stand up but I didn't have rocks in my back all night.. .

    1. I know you full time in your RV as well as many others readers, it is a livestyle you all have chosen. I am talking about everyday regular folks who only camp out once or twice a year.

If I was a kid I would want to camp like the rest of my friends do. Fortunately tents out numbered RV's.

All air mattresses sooner or later develop a leak in particular in the Terlingua rocks. I use a thick yoga mat which are cheaper than sleeping mats and come in more colors. I like bright colors so I can see if there is a snake or other critter on my bed unlike the dark green sleeping mats where they could be camouflaged or their presence going unnoticed by me.

Off topic, I was wondering if you had caught CheapRVLiving live feed today. I had seen Bob's blog on your sidebar. This is the first time in my life I participated in one. He has a lot of good ideas for helping the vandweller community.

    3. Bob Wells has a lot of idea & he's been doing this for a lot of years. He's a nice guy.
Since he started doing youtube there are a lot of people following him!

  2. I have no problem with you not considering RVing camping.

  3. Headed down to PINS Tuesday morning with high tides and thunderstorms in the forecast. Taking a tent for backup but probably on an air mattress in the truckbed with a homemade canopy for shelter. Is that camping? I know one thing - its roughing it for me. Backpackers might care to differ.

    1. I would definitively say that you are "camping" in addition to really roughing it if it rains on you.

However, I know how much you love going there so you will be happy no matter the circumstances and isn't that what it is all about?

    2. Padre Island National Seashore

Longest undeveloped barrier island on earth. Keyword: undeveloped. It is a National Park. Goes from Corpus to Pt. Isabel but there is a waterway about 60 miles down for boat access to Port Mansfield. You cannot drive a vehicle the total length. It is really a treasure to have a place like this with no condos and hotels screwing it up. Kudos to our forefathers who fought development and made it a national park. I'm sure the temptation and $$$ were strong for pro-development.

The pic by my name is sunrise there.

    3. Indeed PINS is a national treasure and the first place I camped out at many, many moons ago.

I know you will have a great time specially since the crowds have gone back home and you will have the place to yourself.

P.S. Don't forget to early vote

    4. Padre Island, I'd not heard it called PINS before. A nice place! It was a stop on my route west this year before that changed, we ended up having some business up north so we'll continue up to Michigan and turn left.

  4. I have been watching the first round of the NBA play-offs this weekend and everyone of the teams I was cheering for lost :-(

Charles Barkley is on TNT this evening and they were messing with him and his "guarantees"...said he guaranteed an OKC win, so you know they will lose. Too bad as I am rooting for them.

  5. I use my truck for camping as getting off the ground would take a tow truck. To old and broken for that tent stuff but of course I used a cot in the tent for awhile. Did you camp out at any of these places this weekend?

    1. This Easter weekend event is designed for tent camping as there would not be enough room if everyone brought an RV and you can not bring vehicles inside the grounds of area parks.

I have never camped out at this event and doubt that I ever would. I do not do well where kids are running around screaming. I prefer adult events like the CASI Chili Cook-off in Terlingua.

    2. I agree about the kids. I go camping for piece and quiet.

    3. While no one would characterize the Chili Cook-off as peaceful or quiet, I can let my hair down and have a good time.

Back in the day I used to go the week before the event and stay a couple of days after to de-stress and enjoy the peace and quiet only the desert affords.

  6. I agree camping in a tent is the real thing I started that over 60 years ago and still, have many wonderful memories, moved into tent trailer off and on for 30 years, a class b, a Class C then finally just sold our house and moved into our class A home in wheels. Enjoying the freedom soon to begin our 14th year full-time.

    1. Like many people you began your camping adventures at a young age and in a tent. That is what I want kids at this event to walk away with...wonderful memories, love of the outdoors and respect for mother nature.

Congratulations on the beginning of your 14th year full-timing.

  7. Thanks for the tour. Now I don't have to go. Ha.
