Car Inspection / Tax Office

It is no surprise to anyone that I tend to put off things until the last minute. If anything positive has come out of this pandemic has been the fact that I am trying to do things on time such as my taxes. My license plate tags expire at the end of the month though in the State of Texas law enforcement gives you a five-day grace period before they issue a citation.

Yesterday I took my car to Mario's Tire Repair to get it inspected. They are a family-owned business and we have been doing business with them for years. There was no wait and I was on my way in ten minutes. One of the good things about living in Val Verde County is that I do not have to pass an emission test like one has to in larger cities. The cost was $7.00 this is the first time I have paid in cash in a long time as they do not take credit cards.

I have not been able to find the form the state sends you to renew your tags so I went to the County Tax Office to see if I could obtain them anyway. There were so many cars people were even parking by the church across the street.

There was a line to get into the building.  I had a 12-minute wait and my temperature was taken before I was allowed inside.  Lucky for me I was able to purchase my license tags without the form they mailed me. Cost $74.00 but if I used a credit card I would have to pay a $2.11 surcharge. Why this odd number I have no idea, did not ask.

Stopped by the post office to pick up the mail and headed home as it was hot. We had a low of 74 with a high of 100 and a heat index of 102 degrees.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. Nice that you got all your must dos done.
Have you ever considered downsizing so you have more personal time and less time spent busting your back.
Be Safe and Enjoy the slightly cooler temperatures.

    It's about time.

    1. It was nice to get the important things out of the way.

Downsizing? This is not my house only my mother can make that decision. All we need is a reliable gardener with a good work ethic that actually shows up when he says he will and finishes the job in two days and not two months. For some reason that is almost impossible in Del Rio.

  2. Barney old fat man blogger is there in Del Rio. a good time to meet up and say Hi. Would love to see more pictures of the beautiful church - what a spire. Oh my $74 tags and I complain about $24 going up to $29 this year!

    1. Caddie, I have to admit I have never been inside this church before. It does have a nice spire. I will look into that for a future blog post.

$29.00 tags sound heavenly...you are so lucky!

I love meeting up with friends but had to pass on getting together with my best friend when she and her boyfriend were in the area...maybe when this pandemic is over.

  3. I am also a person who waits until the last minute. I bought a book on procrastination a while back but haven't read it yet. Maybe tomorrow. Or next week...Jajaja
We don't have inspection or emissions test here. I have permanent plates for everything. It was about $275.00 for my truck, so it is much cheaper in the long run, plus no hassle to worry about. I don't plan on changing my truck. Paid for is my favorite kind to have.
I paid $2.25 a gallon for gasoline. Filled it up two days ago. I keep it loaded in case I have to bug out. Ya never know these days.
We almost had some rain today. It was slightly cooler and is now a lovely 72*. I hope you are getting some relief from that heat.
I called the police on the Dollar store because of no mask enforcement. I don't know if it did any good because she gave me such a canned speech. So they must be backing off enforsement. So going back there is not an option, along with Safeway.

    1. Good to have a fellow procrastinator as a reader!

Never even knew there was such a thing as permanent plates that option would never fly here. Well, the people would love it but not the lawmakers. I agree "paid for" be it a vehicle, a house, actually anything is the best kind to have.

Lol, on you calling the police on Dollar Tree...jajajajaja! I do not know why people refuse to wear masks or if they wear them they do it improperly.

I must admit I was glad karma paid a visit to that congressman from Texas Louie Gohmert. I hope he learned his lesson but doubt it he is now blaming having to wear a mask for getting COVID-19...talk about idiotic statements!

Would love to have your temperatures! We might have some showers this weekend...keeping my fingers crossed.

      Stay safe Ms. Penny!

    2. Regarding Karma: Repub Prez candidate Herman Cain passed from Covid related issues yesterday - Cain tested positive ONE week after attending Twumps rally in Tulsa and was photographed/observed without a mask the entire time he was present...Ms. Karma always plays a roll, we don't always see it.
Regarding Dollar Trees lack of MASK enforcement - Doesn't Texas have a mask mandate - only takes a moment to blast a short Email to your reborn governor (who issued the mandate) with a copy to Dollar Tree corporate describing the incident with the mangers name & store location could be helpful - you might be surprised by the results - All Dollar Trees are company owned, not franchised, so they must follow a standard set of policies....just a thought.

    3. I am not in Texas. I am in Montana.

    4. Ms. Penelope- Beautiful state, I have a crazy buddy I served with who retired to Montana, A couple of us travel up there to visit/fish & lie around every few years, unfortunately due to age and this Covid mess its probably not going to happen again for a while - Anyway - I believe Montana has a MASK up or leave mandate as well.

    5. Yes, there is a mask mandate. But the police do not enforce it. Our chief of police sits on a fence. Yesterday's radio interview about this has him saying he sees both sides and fully intends to continue to do nothing, even as our case numbers rise daily. The county health officers have quit in many counties this week. Raines and his cronies putting out pressure to listen to tRump. The Dollar General people do not plan to enforce the mandate.

  4. Enforcement! I had it right and auto correct changed it. I wish they would let me make my own mistakes!

  5. Well done on getting all that accomplished. Now you're street legal for another year. Glad you survived. I'm already waiting for the heat to be over. And it's no worse than in other years. And then I always think of it that way, come the end of July.

    1. Thank you JudithK, I am glad that is out of the way for another year and that I do not have to venture out for a while. I get very nervous when I have to stand in line with other people even if it is outside.

I agree the heat is no worse than in prior years. I just do not know how I put up with it when I was younger...or perhaps that is the answer...I was YOUNGER :-(

  6. Good for you to get everything done before the very end. Our emmisions test went up to 12.50 plus tx, tags when up due to some BS tax they added I like getting my plates for at least 2yrs at a time. The cost for 1yr this year was more than I paid for 2 years in the past. Nothing but thieves running this state.

    1. In Texas only a new vehicle can purchase license plates for two years...actually it comes like that when you purchase it at the dealership.

I would love to have that option even if it costs more so I would not have to go purchase them in the middle of a pandemic.

  7. I had to laugh (with you) when you commented the excessive amount of cars and lack of available parking while registering your vehicle, I was anticipating you saying a one hour wait in triple digit heat & humidity - was relieved to see it was only 12 minutes.
By the way, I really enjoy reading your blog & your fan clubs comments - you are a true warrior.

    1. Mr. Souze, I have a problem with long lines whether I am standing or sitting in my car in traffic. Leftover issues from years of living in Houston as I feel I have already paid my dues.

The County Courthouse and its adjacent offices sit on a full city block. I was disheartened when I saw a lack of parking space but I had no idea which building or office these people were at.

I was glad that it wasn't at the license plate office or I would have more than likely left.

Thank you for taking the time to read me. Many times the blog follower's comments are much better than the actual post.

  8. I can't imagine why you would pay more if you use a credit card. In my area, many stores are reporting that they can't get coins and bills to give change! Since I haven't been into a store since February I've used only my credit card - the downside is that I lose track of how much I've spent,

    1. In cities or government offices in Texas if you pay your property taxes, license tags, copies of birth certificates, water bills, etc.etc. using a credit card you have to pay an additional fee. If you pay using cash or a check no additional charges apply.
