Day 5 / Our soon to be out of control yard / Rant

Honestly, nothing has changed in my life since I went into self-isolation. I still have my morning chores that often extend beyond the morning. The only new thing is I turn on and actually sit and watch the Coronavirus daily briefings. I thought the administration was making headway after finally admitting this is "not a hoax".  It started ugly today with the repeated phrase "the China virus" and then went downhill with the darn lies. I suffer from high blood pressure so had no choice but to turn the television OFF.

Went outside to take pictures of our soon to be out of control yardFacing north it may look like grass but it is all weeds and branches Pollito's wino sidekick never came back to burn.

In case you are wondering the land behind the cinder block fence also belongs to us...actually to me and it is totally covered by horrible mesquite trees :-(

Our front yard...

The Pecan Tree covered by weeds...

The worst part is the Southern part of the property that butts up to what was once Walter's corral and where Juliet now lives.  She came back in February but I have not had a chance to blog about it though I have no idea what happened to Romeo.

All those green things...you got it...pesky baby mesquite trees...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

It was a very warm and humid day. We had a low of 62 and a high of 87 degrees.

Good night.  May you all have Terlingua Dreams.

  1. If you had a metal Barrel you could hire a local kid to burn those piles then just have them mow the yard.
Social Distancing doesn't mean you have to stay inside just away from other people.
Be Safe and Enjoy the warmer temps.

    It's about time.

    1. This is the desert Rick and while we are currently experiencing rains most of the time it is dry so we are under constant burn bans. I would never hire a teenager to mow the weeds much less burn them due to insurance liabilities. That is the only reason I put up with Pollito and his wino sidekick.

  2. Goats. Know anyone with goats?
I'll bet an electric fence butted up against the existing wall would keep them in and goats would (probably) clean up all that green stuff. There might be someone doing that in your area, I'd check craigslist, the farm store/co-op bulletin board.

    1. Rob, I whine about this topic every Spring. I believe in previous years you had suggested this idea.

Having goats would involve building a new fence, setting up a place to house them, feeding, watering, and cleaning up after them. Apart from being costly, it would be too much work.

While I can only speak for myself I think as a woman we like to voice our frustration on any given subject not really looking for a solution just wanting an outlet to vent.

  3. I like Rob's idea about the goats. They are intriguing animals and a couple of them would probably keep your property in great condition. Is there any way you can kill the mesquite trees while they are still small? Or are there too many to deal with? I have mostly weeds in my back yard and would love to put down something to get rid of them, and then re-seed with some nice grass. The trouble is that I have no way of getting out to buy anything, or talk to someone at the hardware store for advice on what to buy, how to use it, etc. You are so lucky you can drive!

    1. I believe it was Suerte who told me about a product to get rid of them but you had to own a ranch or have some sort of a pesticide license to purchase it. Even if I could buy it I wouldn't because I have always had either cat or dog strays around and it could be harmful to them as well as to us.

The only way to get rid of them is with a bulldozer or tractor but that is only temporary they always grow back.

flyingdj: I wouldn’t call it an “obsession”. I wouldn’t even call it a “fascination“. I have an “interest” in the Texas-Mexico border because (like you) I have crossed it so many times. I don’t remember how long before or after 09/11/2001 that I crossed the border, but I really don’t remember much difference in the border crossing before and after that date. I know, 100%, for sure, that I did not provide a passport before or after that date when I crossed the border. This is currently the biggest change in border crossing in my life time.

  5. I am starting to feel the same about snow here! But just saw some good news and feel some glee in the midst of all the doom and gloom. tRump's properties all shut down! I am sorry any employee s will not have their jobs but feel many of them have had ample time to work elsewhere.
Montana's response has been horrible. This many elected people being this stupid even after the study and exercise addressing this very subject tells me it is deliberate. They are depopulating. And, Pence's office has a confirmed case. It is like trying to kill cockroaches and scorpions.
I hope you will be on guard for your yard bandits coming to visit and not to cut weeds. They will be out of beer and other liquor and will think of you. Please be careful and keep your pea shooter handy.
Maybe all those mesquite beans will be valuable for the coming famine. Stay safe!

    1. I had not heard that bit of good news with regards to his properties, had I been them I would have left a long time ago. Hopefully, the employees will find a better job.

Sorry that Montana's response has not been the desired one but frankly there are many states that are just not taking this seriously. I am no fan of Texas Governor Greg Abbott but I have to give credit where credit is due and he has shown leadership in this very tumultuous time.

I have my gun handy just in case though I fear that people will be coming for my food stash, not my beer. This is going to get ugly sooner than we think. Stay safe as well!

  6. I found a web site with directions to make a mask. I need spray my yard is full of weeds again. My daughter would go buy it but I don't have any cash on hand and I also forgot to buy new filters for the a/c, heater.

    1. There are many websites with directions on how to make masks as is being reported by the media. The sad part is that in the richest nation in the world nurses are asking for the public to please sew some for them as their supplies are running low and yet this administration lies that we have millions on the way for health workers but no one knows when or where they are coming from.

I was going to go buy some A/C filters before I went into self-isolation but I still have two on hand. Next Wednesday we are expected to be in the '90s so the air conditioner is going to have to be turned on.
